Past Lives (2023) review: A realistic "When Harry Met Sally"...

I admit that the first thing I did after finishing Past Lives was to feel baffled at not understanding why a film with such a simple plot had made an impact on so many people, however, thinking about it I realized that this was precisely the reason, since that the film directed by Celine Song (Who, by the way, debuts with this film) is characterized by being an extremely universal story, with which it is very likely that we have all identified at some point in our lives.

Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro, in Past Lives we follow the story of two young Koreans who are separated by circumstances beyond their control and who have the opportunity to meet again a couple of years later, the problem is that in the middle of their studies, work and other relationships with third parties, it seems that the destiny of both is that they will never be together.

Although Past Lives is a romantic film that rejects conflict in traditional terms, its main appeal lies in its ability to represent the process of assimilation and acceptance that two people have in the face of an impossible relationship.

When I talk about universality I mean precisely this, since it is easy to feel identified with the boy (Hae Sung), the girl (Nora), or even with the girl's husband (Arthur).

Past Lives denies us an illogical ending, and accepts harsh reality with a level of optimism that may seem disconcerting but that makes all the sense in the world after we think about it.

I appreciate that it is so devastating and exciting without having to lose composure, that it is full of likable characters and that it presents us with a generic idea from such a refreshing perspective.

Admito que lo primero que Hice luego de terminar Past Lives fue sentirme desconcertado al no entender por qué una película con una trama tan simple había causado un impacto en tantísima gente, no obstante, pensándolo bien me topé con que esta precisamente era la razón, ya que el filme dirigido por Celine Song (Que por cierto, debuta con esta película) se caracteriza por ser una historia extremadamente universal, con la que es muy probable que todos nos hayamos sentidos identificados en algún momento de nuestras vidas.

Protagonizada por Greta Lee, Teo Yoo y John Magaro, en Past Lives seguimos la historia de dos jóvenes coreanos que son separados por circunstancias ajenas a ellos y que tienen la oportunidad de reencontrarse un par de años después, el problema es que en medio de sus estudios, el trabajo y otras relaciones con terceros, pareciera que el destino de ambos es que no estén juntos nunca.

Si bien Past Lives es una película romántica que rechaza el conflicto en términos tradicionales, su principal atractivo radica en la habilidad que tiene para representar el proceso de asimilación y aceptación que dos personas tienen frente a una relación imposible.

Cuando hablo de universalidad me refiero precisamente a esto, puesto que es fácil sentirse identificado con la chico (Hae Sung), la chica (Nora), o incluso, con el esposo de la chica (Arthur).

Past Lives nos niega un final ilógico, y acepta la cruda realidad con un nivel de optimismo que puede parecer desconcertante pero que tiene todo el sentido del mundo luego de que lo reflexionamos bien.

Aprecio que sea tan devastadora y emocionante sin necesidad de perder la compostura, que este plagada de personajes agradables y que nos presente una idea genérica desde una óptica tan refrescante.
