"MaXXXine" is a weird but effective closure.

Although I wasn't a huge fan of X and Pearl, it's hard to not admit that Tk West was involved in one of the more interesting projects of the whole modern horror scenario, creating a solid trilogy that concluded with MaXXXone, a closer that counts with many brilliant ideas and a couple of mistakes hard to ignore.
If Pearl used the 20s as a frame of reference to build her entire aesthetic (One of her best aspects, by the way), MaXXXine feels like a direct continuation of X, taking place a couple of years after it in the mid-80s, after Maxine managed to escape the clutches of an elderly Pearl.
This creates a rather curious situation where despite there being direct connections with both films, in terms of substance we have a very particular hybrid that is less focused on its slasher roots and is presented more as a thriller with a couple of extremely violent moments. , as well as the recurrent use of erotic elements.
However, MaXXXine's true salvation comes with its own setting, insisting on regularly using music from the era and using multiple camera tricks to immerse us in its aesthetics. While I don't feel like we're looking at a product as long-winded as "Pearl," this is enough of an incentive to watch it over other generic horror movies that might be currently being released.
Its plot is simple, after the traumatic events experienced by Maxine, she decides to go to Hollywood to try to make a name for herself in the world of entertainment... Starting out as a pornographic actress but willing to accept any opportunity that allows her to grow.
Things get complicated when several of Maxine's acquaintances are murdered under mysterious conditions, something that seems to be connected to a serial killer who has been doing his thing in Los Angeles for some time.
While the plot is nothing special and the final reveal barely leaves an impact on the viewer, it all serves as a simple excuse for the scriptwriter to bombard us with a sequence of pretentious moments, and, to be honest, most of them land. fairly good.
Maxxxine is a silly movie that pretends not to be, but despite all this I feel that it works very well, and that it still represents a substantial improvement over the majority of modern horror cinema.
There is a solid cast (Led by Mía Goth), good gore sequences and a couple of interesting thematic aspects.
It's nothing out of this world but it has the ability to keep us entertained.

Aunque no fui muy fanático de X y Pearl, es difícil no admitir que Ti West estuvo detrás de uno de los proyectos más interesantes en el panorama del terror moderno, creando una sólida trilogía que concluye con MaXXXine, un cierre que cuenta con muchas ideas brillantes y un par de desaciertos difíciles de ignorar.
Si Pearl utilizaba los años 20s como marco de referencia para construir toda su estética (Uno de sus mejores aspectos, por cierto), MaXXXine se siente como una continuación directa de X, situandose un par de años después de esta a mediados de los 80s, luego de que Maxine lograra escapar de las garras de una Pearl ya anciana.
Esto crea una situación bastante curiosa en dónde a pesar de haber conexiones directas con ambos filmes, en términos de sustancia tenemos un híbrido muy particular que se ve menos enfocado con sus raíces slasher y se presentan más como un thriller con un par de momentos extremadamente violentos, así como el uso recurrente de elementos eróticos.
No obstante, la verdadera salvación de MaXXXine viene con su propio setting, empeñada en utilizar regularmente música de la era y utilizando múltiples trucos de camara para sumergirnos en su estética. Si bien no siento que estemos ante un producto tan prolijo como "Pearl", esto resulta un incentivo suficiente para verla por encima de otras películas de terror genéricas que podrían estarse estrenando actualmente.
Su trama es simple, luego de los eventos traumáticos vividos por Maxine, decide ir a Hollywood para tratar de hacerse un nombre en el mundo del espectáculo... Empezando como una actriz pornográfica pero dispuesta a aceptar cualquier oportunidad que le permita crecer.
Las cosas se complican cuando varios conocidos de Maxine son asesinados en condiciones misteriosas, algo que parece estar conectado con un asesino serial que lleva un tiempo haciendo de las suyas en los Angeles.
Si bien la trama no es nada del otro mundo y la revelación final apenas deja impacto en el espectador, todo sirve como una simple escusa por parte del guionista para bombardearnos con una secuencia de momentos pretenciosos, y, siendo honesto, la mayoría de ellos aterrizan bastante bien.
Maxxxine es una película tonta que pretende no serlo, pero a pesar de todo esto yo siento que funciona muy bien, y que sigue representando una mejora sustancial frente a la mayoría del cine de terror moderno.
Hay un cast sólido (Encabezado por Mía Goth), buenas secuencias de gore y un par de aspectos temáticos interesantes.
No es nada del otro mundo pero tiene la capacidad de mantenernos entretenidos.
