Cabin in the Woods (2011) review: Embracing the cliché.

Cabin in the Woods is considered one of the most brilliant horror films of all time, and although I feel that in the current scene there are many more interesting and experimental alternatives, the irony of the matter is that Drew Goddard's film largely contributed to this.

The reason? Apply the concept of deconstruction in the best possible sense, taking something as generic and familiar as the teen slasher and reinventing each of the structural aspects.

The result is clear: Cabin in the Woods serves simultaneously as a tribute and a parody, where we initially follow a group of teenagers who decide to enjoy a couple of days in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, each of them representing the perfection a gender stereotype (the athlete, the stoner, the shy girl, etc.).

The thing is, we will eventually discover that there is a giant corporation that is manipulating their every move, and of course, they have very shady intentions.

Cabin in the Woods manages to perfectly replicate the writing style of slashers, something that may be objectively negative at the beginning of the film, but that progressively makes more and more sense when we understand the true intention of the entire story.

Nothing is what it seems and each visual and narrative element has a dual purpose, from the hilarious sexualization of its teenage characters (who are obviously not teenagers) to the helplessness of being faced with a threat that is impossible to overcome.

Beyond this, it is important to accept that Cabin in the wood is not only content with being an entertaining film with an intelligent premise, but also knows how to be efficient in each of its technical and audiovisual aspects, its special effects are brilliant, the direction It is captivating and the performances of the protagonists do a wonderful job.

Cabin in the Woods es considerada una de las películas de terror más brillantes de todos los tiempos, y aunque siento que el panorama actual existen muchas alternativas más interesantes y experimentales, la ironía del asunto es que en gran parte el filme de Drew Goddard contribuyó con esto.

¿La razón? Aplicar el concepto de deconstrucción en el mejor sentido posible, tomando algo Tan genérico y familiar como el slasher de adolescentes y reinventando cada uno de los aspectos estructurales.

El resultado es claro: Cabin in the Woods sirve simultáneamente como un homenaje y una parodia, en donde inicialmente seguimos a un grupo de adolescentes que deciden disfrutar un par de días en una cabaña en medio de la nada, cada uno de ellos representa a la perfección un estereotipo del género (el atleta, el stoner, la chica tímida, etc).

La cuestión es que eventualmente descubriremos que existe una corporación gigante que está manipulando cada uno de sus movimientos, y por supuesto, tienen intenciones muy turbias.

Cabin in the Woods logra replicar a la perfección el estilo de escritura de los slashers, algo que puede resultar objetivamente negativo al principio del filme, pero que progresivamente va tomando más y más sentido cuando entendemos la verdadera intención de toda la historia.

Nada es lo que parece y cada elemento visual y narrativo tiene un doble propósito, desde la hilarante sexualización de sus personajes adolescentes (que obviamente no son adolescentes) hasta la impotencia de estar frente a una amenaza imposible de superar.

Más allá de esto, es importante aceptar que Cabin in the wood no se conforma únicamente con ser una película entretenida con una premisa inteligente, sino que sabe ser eficiente en cada uno de sus aspectos técnicos y audiovisuales, sus efectos especiales son brillantes, la dirección es atraparte y los performances de los protagonistas hacen un trabajo estupendo.
