Blue beetle (2023) review: A decent surprise.

I finally had the opportunity to see Blue Beetle, and I found it quite ironic that despite the little faith I had in this film, it has turned out to be one of the most pleasant surprises of the entire year.

Don't get me wrong, it is not a film that is characterized by overflowing quality precisely and at no point does it take the trouble to abandon all the problems and sins that have characterized the saturated superhero cinema in recent years... however, it is undeniable That honesty with the approach to its own premise makes it easy to gravitate toward it.

For those who are not familiar with the character, Blue Beetle is the story of Jaime Reyes, a young man who decides to finish his studies in Gotham City and decides to return to his hometown to reunite with his family: The Kings.

There he will find that his family's financial situation is quite serious and he must find a job to be able to support them.

This is how he ends up meeting Jenny Kord, the descendant of one of the most powerful families in the city, who in the middle of a hurry ends up entrusting Jaime with the care of a mysterious artifact that has the ability to give superpowers to humans.

Although Blue Beetle has a fairly formulaic premise, it is important to highlight that it is always narrated with freshness, supported by a pleasant style of humor, good music and constant references to Latin and Mexican culture (Where do the Kings come from). In an ocean of superhero movies bent on setting up crossovers, multiversal events, and catastrophes where everyone is at risk, there's something particularly entertaining about having the chance to see a classic origin story again, less focused on the scale of the movie. conflict and more focused on the mental state and problems of its protagonists.

If I had to summarize all the virtues of Blue Beetle in a single word I would say: sincerity... sincerity to establish its premise, sincerity to present its characters and sincerity to entertain us without needing to exaggerate the drama of its most tense moments.

Obviously it has flaws, the special effects leave a lot to be desired in the most "complex" moments, the script is not always as neat as we would like and the direction and pacing can be generic. Still, it's great to have such an honest film in a landscape where disasters like The Flash or Ant Man Quantunmania seem to be the standard.

Finalmente tuve la oportunidad de ver Blue Beetle, y me pareció bastante irónico que a pesar de la poca fe que tenía en esta película ha resultado una de las sorpresas más gratas de todo el año.

No me malinterpreten, no es una película que se caracterice por desbordar calidad precisamente y en ningún momento se toma la molestia de abandonar todos los problemas y pecados que han caracterizado al saturado cine de superhéroes durante los últimos años... no obstante, es innegable que la honestidad con la aborda su propia premisa hace que sea fácil gravitar hacia a ella.

Para aquellos que no se encuentran familiarizados con el personaje, Blue Beetle es la historia de Jaime Reyes, un joven que decide que concluye sus estudios en Gotham city y decide volver a su ciudad natal para reencontrarse con la familia: Los reyes.

Allí se encontrará con que la situación económica de su familia está bastante grave y debe encontrar un trabajo para poder apoyarlos.

Así es como termina conociendo a Jenny Kord, la descendiente de una de las familias más poderosas de la ciudad, quien en medio de un apuro termina encargandole a Jaime el cuidado de un misterioso artefacto que tiene la capacidad de darle superpoderes a los humanos.

Si bien Blue Beetle cuenta con una premisa bastante formulaíca, es importante destacar que está siempre se encuentra narrada con frescura, apoyada por un estilo de humor agradable, buena música y referencias constantes a la cultura latina y mexicana (De dónde vienen los Reyes). En un océano de películas de superhéroes empeñadas con establecer crossovers, eventos multiversales y catástrofes en dónde todo el mundo se encuentra en riesgo, hay algo particularmente entretenido en tener la oportunidad de ver una historia de origen clásica otra vez, menos enfocada en la escala del conflicto y más enfocada en el estado mental y los problemas de sus protagonistas.

Si tuviese que sintetizar todas las virtudes de Blue Beetle en una única palabra diría: sinceridad... sinceridad para establecer su premisa, sinceridad para presentar a sus personajes y sinceridad para entretenernos sin necesidad de exagerar el dramatismo de sus momentos más tensos.

Obviamente tiene defectos, los efectos especiales dejan mucho que desear en los momentos más "complejos", el guión no siempre es tan pulcro como quisiéramos y la dirección y el ritmo pueden pecar de genéricos. Aún así, es genial tener un filme tan honesto en un panorama en dónde desastres como The Flash o Ant Man Quantunmania parecen ser el estandard.
