My family decided to have a movie night, but we had no idea what to watch.

As I scrolled Netflix for ideas I thought about how my brother had recently gotten into basketball, dragging the family onto the sport with him.

So I suggested we watch Hustle, a movie that came out a couple of years ago that centered around basketball and had a lot of famous NBA player cameos. Simply put, this movie did not disappoint.

So What Is Hustle About, Anyway?

Hustle follows Stanley Sugarman, an NBA scout who’s spent around a decade going to countries around the world searching for young talent good enough to bring to the Philadelphia 76ers.

After spending countless days and nights restless and missing years worth of his daughter’s birthdays, Stanley wants to move away from scouting, and become the assistant coach for the team. It would allow him to work close to home and coach players on the game he loves, but his new boss is making that dream harder and harder to achieve.

Bo Cruz is a young man in Spain, just trying to make it for his daughter and his mother. He is an amazing basketball talent that Stanley thinks could be his big break-through. The two team up to try and get Bo into the NBA draft in a matter of weeks-with Stanley’s job and Bo’s life depending on it!

What I Was a Fan of

I loved the acting. Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah killed it as the Sugarman couple, and Jordan Hull was amazing playing as their daughter. Their characters radiated with depth and had detailed pasts that added to the already intriguing story.

Many more of the cast was amazing playing their roles, with a lot of the basketball cast doing great as well. Anthony Edwards was great as Kermit Wilts, the main antagonist of the story. That said, it was a little bittersweet to see him playing the jerk and trying to get in Bo’s head a majority of the story, knowing he’s funny and charismatic on and off the court as a basketball player, in my opinion.

I also liked that in this movie, we didn’t just focus on a future NBA player, but a scout as well. I don’t hear much about this job, so it was interesting to see the ruff days and many talents Stanley came across throughout the movie.

Lots of NBA Player Cameos

Ah, this movie had a ton of cameos! I saw lots of basketball players that are really in the NBA playing the roles of themselves or other characters.

Juancho Hernangomez, a former NBA player played the fiery rookie Bo Cruz, and as I’ve said before, Anthony Edwards played the antagonist, Kermit Wilts. Other players, such as Tyrese Maxey, Trae Young, and Seth Curry played as themselves or were there for basketball fans to spot.

Overall this movie was clever, heartfelt, and an enjoyable watch for family movie night. (Though I’ll say, there is a good amount of adult language within the movie.)

Mi familia decidió tener una noche de cine, pero no teníamos idea de qué ver.

Mientras buscaba ideas en Netflix, pensé en cómo mi hermano se había involucrado recientemente en el baloncesto, arrastrando a la familia al deporte con él.

Me encantó la actuación. Adam Sandler y Queen Latifah lo mataron como la pareja Sugarman, y Jordan Hull fue increíble interpretando a su hija. Sus personajes irradiaban profundidad y tenían pasados detallados que se sumaban a la ya intrigante historia.

Muchos más del elenco fueron increíbles interpretando sus papeles, y gran parte del elenco de baloncesto también lo hizo muy bien. Anthony Edwards fue genial como Kermit Wilts, el principal antagonista de la historia. Dicho esto, fue un poco agridulce verlo jugando al imbécil y tratando de meterse en la cabeza de Bo la mayor parte de la historia, sabiendo que es divertido y carismático dentro y fuera de la cancha como jugador de baloncesto, en mi opinión.

También me gustó que en esta película no solo nos enfocáramos en un futuro jugador de la NBA, sino también en un cazatalentos. No escucho mucho sobre este trabajo, así que fue interesante ver los días ruff y muchos talentos con los que Stanley se encontró a lo largo de la película.

¡Ah, esta película tuvo un montón de cameos! Vi a muchos jugadores de baloncesto que realmente están en la NBA interpretando papeles de ellos mismos o de otros personajes.
