Keep hope alive, and it’ll keep you alive | The Shawshank Redemption Review [ENG-ESP]

This line is as alluring as the movie it’s from. The movie in question, The Shawshank Redemption, is my father’s favorite movie, and he doesn’t even care for film. In fact, there have been countless times where I would be so invested in a movie only to see his chair is empty or he’s snoring, sleep more interesting than movie night. I remember when I was younger I’d ask him if there was any movie out there that he did like, and he’d say The Shawshank Redemption. I remember seeing the movie cover and thinking, what, why?
Recently, we watched the movie together for the first time, and now I see why it is held so highly by him. It is art, and I was surprised to see the whole movie was based on a short story by Stephen King.
The Shawshank Redemption starts out showing Andy Dufrense, a banker convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He’s then sentenced to Shawshank Prison. From the beginning Andy proves to be a peculiar prisoner, and with him, everything isn’t as it seems. From the warden, to prison guards, to even other convicts, no one knows what to make of him. It’s a race to figure him out, challenging even for long-time inmate and close friend, Red, who the story is told by.
Review
The Shawshank Redemption had good characters, from the guards to the inmates. I knew enough about their personalities to like or dislike them, but there was enough of their stories left untold to wonder about. Lots of characters had me intrigued to find out how they got into Shawshank prison.
The suspense was just beautiful. If you know anything about Stephen King, you know that horror is his specialty. Now, The Shawshank Redemption isn’t a horror film, but the elements of suspense are definitely there and will have you wondering why Andy does certain things… and what will happen to Andy because he did.
The moral of hope in this film is very influential. It’s the driving force of the movie, and something Andy keeps so dearly. There’s people who have hope, and people who don’t. They also show people who lose hope…as well as people who gain it. I think that’s one of the things that makes this story so special.
Despite Andy Dufrense being the story’s center, the story is told by Red through the occasional monologue.
Initially I didn’t like that. I mean, Andy is the one shaking things up, why are we watching him through the eyes of Red? But thinking back, I grew to like that. Andy’s thoughts and ideas aren’t exposed, leaving an irresistible mystery to him, and leaving the viewer to think for themselves why and how Andy did things.
Overall, this movie was a work of art and definitely deserves the near perfect ratings it has on multiple sites. I’d recommend this movie to anyone who’d enjoy watching a long and satisfying tale. I will say though, a handful of scenes are quite violent and may prove a tough watch for some.

Esta frase es tan atractiva como la película de la que proviene. La película en cuestión, The Shawshank Redemption, es la película favorita de mi padre, y ni siquiera le importa el cine. De hecho, ha habido innumerables ocasiones en las que estaría tan interesado en una película solo para ver que su silla está vacía o ronca, duerme más interesante que la noche de cine. Recuerdo que cuando era más joven le preguntaba si había alguna película que le gustara, y decía The Shawshank Redemption. Recuerdo haber visto la portada de la película y pensar, ¿qué, por qué?
Recientemente, vimos la película juntos por primera vez, y ahora veo por qué él la valora tanto. Es arte, y me sorprendió ver que toda la película estaba basada en un cuento de Stephen King.
The Shawshank Redemption comienza mostrando a Andy Dufrense, un banquero condenado por asesinar a su esposa y su amante. Luego es sentenciado a la prisión de Shawshank. Desde el principio Andy demuestra ser un prisionero peculiar, y con él, no todo es lo que parece. Desde el alcaide, hasta los guardias de la prisión, e incluso otros convictos, nadie sabe qué pensar de él. Es una carrera descubrirlo, un desafío incluso para el recluso de mucho tiempo y amigo cercano, Red, de quien cuenta la historia.
Revisión
The Shawshank Redemption tenía buenos personajes, desde los guardias hasta los reclusos. Sabía lo suficiente sobre sus personalidades como para gustarles o disgustarles, pero había suficientes historias que no se contaban como para preguntarme. Muchos personajes me intrigaron para descubrir cómo llegaron a la prisión de Shawshank.
El suspenso fue simplemente hermoso. Si sabes algo de Stephen King, sabes que el terror es su especialidad. Ahora, The Shawshank Redemption no es una película de terror, pero los elementos de suspenso definitivamente están ahí y harán que te preguntes por qué Andy hace ciertas cosas and y qué le sucederá a Andy porque lo hizo.
La moraleja de la esperanza en esta película es muy influyente. Es la fuerza motriz de la película, y algo que Andy guarda con tanto cariño. Hay gente que tiene esperanza y gente que no. También muestran a gente que pierde hope...as así como las personas que lo ganan. Creo que esa es una de las cosas que hace que esta historia sea tan especial.
A pesar de que Andy Dufrense es el centro de la historia, Red la cuenta a través del monólogo ocasional.
Al principio no me gustaba eso. Quiero decir, Andy es el que está sacudiendo las cosas, ¿por qué lo estamos viendo a través de los ojos de Red? Pero pensando en retrospectiva, me gustó eso. Los pensamientos e ideas de Andy no se exponen, dejándole un misterio irresistible y dejando que el espectador piense por sí mismo por qué y cómo Andy hizo las cosas.
En general, esta película fue una obra de arte y definitivamente merece las calificaciones casi perfectas que tiene en varios sitios. Recomendaría esta película a cualquiera que disfrute viendo una historia larga y satisfactoria. Sin embargo, diré que un puñado de escenas son bastante violentas y pueden resultar difíciles de ver para algunos.
