The Desperate Hour – Spoiler Free Review

The Desperate Hour/i> was directed by Phillip Noyce and came out in 2022. Who could have thought that a movie with basically one main character running in the woods can be so nail gripping. All praise to Naomi Watts who singlehandedly carried the entire movie on her shoulders.

The movie follows Amy who is a widow and a mother to a teenager boy and a young girl. They have a hard life trying to readjust to life without a husband and father. One day Amy goes for a run in the woods to relax. Then she gets a message that her son's high school is in lockdown because of a shooting incident. Now Amy is in a race to get to the school as soon as possible while also trying to find any information that she can. Is her son safe or is her troubled son actually the shooter himself?

I know that it doesn't sound like the most exciting of movies, but it is really good. I saw it in theaters and I was gripped by it. There is something about the plot, the script, the editing, all of it just comes together. It doesn't hurt that the forest is both beautiful and very eerie. Watts deserved her Oscar and she is still an Oscar level actress and carries this entire movie effortlessly on her shoulders.

If you are looking for a movie with a message, this isn't the movie for you. It doesn't have anything meaningful to say regarding school shootings, gun control, education or the way society treats certain people. Also, almost all of the movie is Naomi Watts running in the forest and talking and texting on her phone. If you want any action this isn't the movie for you. It is clearly a pandemic movie and they did the best with what they had. I think the result was entertaining enough. It's not a brilliant movie, or one that will stick with you, but it is survivable.
