Gone Girl (movie review): A Revenge Plan

I am not a big fan of Hollywood movies, but psychological and crime movies always get a hold of me. I was on the couch, surfing Netflix with my sister, looking for a non-seasonal movie we could watch. Then, I stumbled on a movie with one of the most captivating titles I have ever seen, “Gone Girl”.

My sis excitedly suggested I watch it, and commended it for its outstanding storyline. I believed her since she had read the book, and there was a high possibility that the movie would be as good as the book. However, I was still on the couch, trying to wrap my head around the title “The Gone Girl”. I was intrigued, and I had no choice but to watch it. And believe me when I say I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. The suspense was on another level, and it was so unpredictable even till the last scene.

Here is the summary

Nick Dunne was having a regular day until he discovered his wife, Amy Dunne, was missing. He was indifferent and nonchalant as he contacted the police. He guessed maybe it was one of her crazy treasure hunt games she loved to play on their wedding anniversary. Little did he know, that his life was about to go south.

Nick hasn’t been happy in their marriage ever since he started seeing his little girlfriend. Although the first few months of their marriage were beautiful. Amy did all her “cool girl” act just to be a perfect wife for her husband, Nick. She doesn't want her marriage to be pathetic like most marriages. But their marriage was even more pathetic in the long run, producing a bored, unfaithful husband and a jealous or rather, psychotic wife.

Amy loved her marriage but hated how her husband was living and enjoying his life with his girlfriend, without the concern that their marriage was falling apart. She took it upon herself to end the marriage with a carefully devised revenge plan that would destroy both her and even put her unfaithful husband in a worse position.

Her plan was halfway through when things took an unexpected turn. However, she used the situation to her advantage and she got what she wanted.

My thoughts

This movie blends crime, psychology, thriller, romance (a little), and mystery. I would rate this movie a 9 out of 10, and here is why.

Gone Girl is one of the best psychological movies I have ever watched. The storyline, characters, acting, the setting, and the cinematography were all perfectly executed.

As I mentioned earlier, the storyline is unique and unpredictable. It blends crime into marriage, making It feel like a love story but not a regular love story. It also tells it in a way that is relatable to normal life, relationships, marriage and society.

Let's talk about the characters. Each actor played their role perfectly. Most of the characters were weird and the actors portrayed them so well, even as they were written in the book.

My favourite character is the main protagonist. Though she is portrayed as a psychotic wife, I see her as just a jealous wife who is driven by revenge and pain. All she wanted was for their love to be rekindled as when they were newly married. Despite she gave her all to her husband, he repaid her with betrayal and neglect. The movie portrayed Amy, the wife as the villain, but the real villain is Nick, the husband. He was the source of all her villainy but acted like he was the one suffering.

This psychotic love story shows that; a one-sided love is deadly; Jealousy is a poison, even to oneself; Every action comes with consequences; Don’t over-love and don't under-love; and lastly, love your wife!

I love this movie, but if I were Amy in real life, I guess I would just walk away from the marriage and never force a man to love me. Though she got what she wanted, her life will still be as miserable as it were, because love can't be forced.

If you enjoy psychology thrillers, mystery, and crime movie genres, then this is a must-watch. I rate it a 9 out of 10. If you have seen it, let me know your thoughts and ratings in the comments section.
