Let’s Make It To The Track: GRAN TURISMO [2023]
Artificial intelligence is real and here to stay regardless of your liking. Maybe it will evolve into something else but Gran Turismo is proof of how cutting-edge technology can transform people’s lives in reality. I am not sure whether simulation has something to do with AI, but I’m sure they co-exist one way or another.
Talking about the story, in brief, a simulation video game player was given an opportunity to use his gaming skills in the real field and turned out a success— to all the gamers out there, it’s an honour you can live with. No shame in not seeing the sunshine in summer or that snowman in winter.
The movie is all about the story itself, not the presentation or dramatisation. Initially, like I usually do, skip any gaming movies as they hardly resemble the thrill of real games, felt through the spine. But I am a big fan of real-life movies. So, it was a dilemma— should I avoid this for being a gaming movie or take the bait as the plot is inspired by true events?
After giving it much thought, I decided to give it a try and was already disappointed seeing loosely connected plots in the beginning. But my attention grew after seeing the protagonist getting a grip on it— although, it’s predictable; but the point is, what’d be the twist before the thrill pinnacles?
The story revolves around family, fear of failure, romance, hatred, business, and success. But above all, thematically, the movie tells you a story where dedication triumphs, technology reigns, and confidence accomplishes. If not for the movie, I wouldn’t know this happened, I wouldn’t know why everything blurs when the car runs at 200mph.
Compared to other racing movies, Ford vs. Ferrari for example, Gran Turismo isn’t up to the bar. But it cuts. Racing fans like me demand more technical elaboration on the machines, there could have been more of it than straightforward brief racing scenes with more backroom stories than the track. It’s a racer in the making, this could be celebrated more with detailed dramatisation— my point of disappointment.
Strategically, the whole movie was a branding of the PlayStation, Nissan and its success stories. This was deliberate but it’s the whole crew who works with a single goal and attains the ultimate success— there’s nothing much about it.
However, I don't expect every movie I choose to entertain me to my fullest and I enjoyed spending time before the screen for this movie; it was a good one.
