Guardians of the Galaxy

IMG_3470 (2).jpeg

We have been working so hard these days. It was definitely time for a reward. One of the advantages of homeschooling is we can plan things when few others are about ... being busy with 9-5.

So we got up a little early and headed to the cinemas just after midday to catch the newest instalment of the of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Of all the Marvel incarnations, Guardians of the Galaxy is hands down my favourite comic come to life. I simply love the cast and what appears among them a real joy to be acting together.

If you were thinking that the cast would be one short after the death of Gamora at the hands of Thanos in Infinity Wars, nope. Gamora is still with us. No, she didn't bounce back up from the bottom of the cliff she was thrown over, but was magically reborn, delivered by virtue of the deus ex machina that is the Marvel Multiverse.

They wrote in short explanation, delivered unapologetically through exposition no less, to do with that very fickle time-space continuum, that turns out not to be very continuous at all. In the Marvel Universi, we are all resurrectable, just rip a hole in the fabric of time and space, and voilà, the seemingly permanently written-out, return to animated flesh and blood. Eat your heart out soap operas; no evil twins, incredulous plastic surgery, or several dream season needed.

Gamora is back but she is a variant, and not very Gamora-like and definitely not in love non-variant Quill. She's a scoundrel. And boy is Quill bummed ... as spoke in the international sign of being movie-male lovelorn ... getting drunk and belligerent.

Quill is in an inebriated coma and this makes the GOG gang vulnerable to attack by the very powerful, but comically clueless Sovereign, Adam Warlock. Rocket is injured and his true genetically modified, machine-enhanced nature is revealed, and it just so happens makes it impossible to heal him ... without a digital key. See he is patent protected. Off the team goes to fight with a bloated biological suited Nathan Fillion and other equally absurd space minions. They head to the corporate headquarters that just so happen to resemble the human digestive system ... in space ... where a little raccoon became a rocket raccoon oh so-many moons ago.

GOG volume 3 is very funny, creative, and at times lightly emotional. Feels like times with friends. Go see.

Dealing with Cyber Bullying

These tulips are on their last legs, but have managed to capture the beauty of the universe. The dark petals slowly dimming to purple, indigo, and then blue mimic a nebula and the pollen flakes a multitude of stars. Otherworldly, flowery beauty. How is that flowers become artists in their last days?

IMG_3477 (2).jpeg

Minime loves the time he is allowed online. In particular, he loves his instagram. I am thankful that our Language Arts unit has included a segment on what to do when encountered with cyber bullying. But first they offered up a a pet talk from the Kid's President. Who knew there was a such a thing.

Notes from the Video ...

Kid President prepared the video for kids that need pointing in the right direction. He says we all need a pep talk and that the world needs us to stop being boring. We are all on the same team but will take different paths. Take the awesome one, the exciting one even though it might be the harder one. Keep going and keep going.
He asks what will you create that will make the world awesome. We can make every day better for each other. We were made to be awesome. Get to it.

IMG_3478 (1).jpeg

So first they gave a fabulous exemplar of how to behave online before we tackled the bullying.

IMG_3473 (2).jpeg

Notes from the video ...

Joe is popular at school because he doesn’t try to be to cool and is friendly to everyone. However, Willam does not like Joe. He is jealous of Joe. He sends Joe a nasty email and threatens to ‘kick out his teeth.’ All day Joe worries . He also posts an ugly and untruthful rumour online that a lot of other kids can see. Like Alex, Joe saves the evidence and tells his parents and they tell the school. The school tells the police and William’s parents.

IMG_3476 (2).jpeg

Notes from the 2nd video ...

Alex is in the 4th grade. Big Mike in grade 6 is a big bully. He calls Alex names and makes fun of him, but Alex knows what to do. He tells an adult.

There are bullies on the internet too, kids that send mean messages, threaten, and taunt other kids online. They are called cyberbullies.

Cyberbullying can happen anywhere you can access the internet. If you get cyberbullied save or screen shot the evidence and show them to your parents or a trusted adult. They can bring it to show the school of even the police.

How to Handle Cyber Bullying

  • Block/mute
  • Tell a trusted adult
  • Screen shot or save the evidence
  • Don't overshare online
  • Check privacy setting
  • Report bullying to host website
  • Remind yourself that it is the bully's personality that is at issue; don't take it personally

Cyberbullying can happen anywhere you can access the internet.

with more and more modern life revolving around the internet, cyberbullying is one of the threats that can pose to the kid or adults. it might not hurt physically but could do a great damage mentally.
stay safe, and always monitor what the kids see and consume on the internet.

Far too many people out there being hidden by the internet become bullies. In real life they are likely tiny cowards, but on the internet they are complete and utter assholes (forgive my French.) That's great advice you're sharing and it can happen to anyone. Thanks for covering such an important subject!

On a happier note, Guardians of the Galaxy are the best!
