I’m back with yet another review, this time about the movie “The Substance” which recently premiered and I didn’t think twice to go to the movies, actually I watched it right after going to “Speak no Evil” another movie I wrote a review too which you can find in this link
I think this is one of those movies that either you hate or love, in mi case I loved it, proof of that is that I went to watch it again today because is one of those narratives where the more you see the more things you find.
I won’t tell you all of the plot due to it being a new movie and not everyone has seen it yet and I don’t want to spoil it, but I’ll talk about my points of view about it.
It’s a movie full of symbolisms, its premise is about having the chance to become a better and younger version of oneself with the help of a substance.
First of all, it’s a straight critic to how is it to age in the entertainment industry, mostly for women who in order to be successful in showbusiness have the requirement of being beautiful, a world where aging is synonym of not being attractive anymore and in consequence stop being hired, Madonna was very expressive about it in 2016 during a speech for Billboard awards, in summary she said: “If you’re a girl you have to play the game, you’re allowed to be pretty, cute and sexy, but don’t act too smart, don’t have an opinion that is out of line of the status quo, you’re allowed to be objectified by men. Be what men want you to be. And finally do not age, because to age is a sin, you’ll be criticized, you’ll be bullied and you will definitely not be played on the radio,” take a look at that speech, it’s really good, I’ll leave the video at the end.
This stage of not being considered attractive for showbusiness anymore is what takes Elisabeth Sparkle; who in her youth was a very successful and loved actress; decide to want to take back what she had and be accepted again, and the substance offers her what she longs so much.
The substance, just as any other medicament, has its instructions so the self and the other self can coexist, they alternate the control of their live and must not forget they are the same person; basically those instructions are simple but on execution aren’t as simple as they sounded.
As the plot moves forward, both versions of the protagonist’s characteristics are more noticeable, we see the insecurity and hate Elisabeth feels for herself are growing, and in her counterpart Sue the desire and need of being the center of attention grows to the point of selfishly take over as much time as possible ignoring Elisabeth.
Judging by each one’s lifestyles they seem like two different persons, honestly at times I forgot one of the substance’s rules, the one that warned not to forget they are one and the same and I perceived them as different persons, but in reality it just made more evident Elisabeth’s fear of rejection, aging, of become irrelevant and finally being forgotten, Sue just as her original counterpart Elisabeth has those same fears and not even being in a different and improved body she stopped loathing the fact of not being relevant and mot being young, she shows it by constantly rejecting everything Elisabeth is and she considers her pathetic, soon she puts her needs over Elisabeth’s ignoring the balance they’re supposed to keep.
The loss of balance is shown in a subtle way, when Sue sees the closet and takes out all of Elisabeth’s belongings to keep only what’s hers, ignoring that Elisabeth will need her stuff once she takes back control of her life while the younger version sleeps.
In my point of view, Elisabeth is intoxicated by the way showbusiness handles itself, because she treats herself as an object and not as a person, and that is shown as both versions of herself by the way the body in turn treats the one that’s resting, they leave each other dropped on the floor as if dropping a simple used rag which they leave handy because eventually they’ll have to wear it again, and once Sue stopped liking that rag because she found it annoying she simply dropped it in a dark corner.
None of them respect each other, not even with the help of the substance which was supposed to create a better version of herself Elisabeth could accept, respect and love herself, she simply didn’t become a better person and only accelerated the decadence and fall of her career and life she was so afraid of.
Even that they didn’t confronted face to face, Elisabeth and Sue both felt haunted by each other, Sue by a huge photo of Elisabeth hanging in the apartment’s living room, and Elisabeth by the huge photo of Sue’s billboard placed right in front of her window, that conflict between them is constantly shown by the way both portraits are always set one in front of the other, until Sue takes away Elisabeth’s when she decides It’s time to take over and monopolize the time that’s supposed to be for both.
Breaking that balance consumes both, when Elisabeth sees the harm Sue did to her when she broke balance decides to end the treatment, in order to do so she gets another substance that will terminate Sue, but she regrets in the last second when she realizes Sue is, after all, everything Elisabeth wants to be, Sue is getting all the love and acceptance Elisabeth had when she was on the top of her career. This last minute regret leads to both of them finally see each other face to face for the first time being both awake, and the self-loathe Elisabeth has been feeling for herself for so long Sue shows it in a very notorious way by attacking Elisabeth, blinded by having seen Elisabeth wanted to get rid of her, and in Elisabeth is notorious the fear she feels towards Sue’s reaction, there’s no doubt Elisabeth knows what Sue is capable of do as rejection for her appearance and actions, because as we know, they are the same person, and this indicates that Elisabet knows what she herself is capable of do in order to fight her own decadence and remain in the spotlight.
This confrontation takes place right before a New Year’s eve presentation that’s supposed to launch Sue to stardom beyond being a fitness show host, and Sue by rejecting her original version and end with her she dooms herself because she can’t exist without Elisabeth… despite of that, what matters more for Sue is reach fame and remain being relevant in the showbiz.
In her desperation for that acceptance and success, Sue repeats the actions she did as Elisabeth, such as see the substance as a solution and wanting to be an improved version of herself, one that’s not metaphoric and literally falling apart ceasing to exist.
Using the substance a second time creates an horrendous deformed Elisabeth and Sue hybrid, and that way we meet Elisue monster. Now that I think of it, she indeed creates an improved version, but not in appearance but what get improvement are Elisabeth/Sue’s characteristics, these being the obsession to remain successful and the desperate wish of being accepted and loved by the public.
Elisue goes to the presentation, and the way the public reacts to her seemed to me a very straight representation of how public acts with famous people, even though Elisue’s public see her appearance they don’t react much, we are so used to se famous women get endless amount of surgeries that totally change the way the look, and in spite of not always look esthetically pleasant , it’s a common thing seeing those surgeries on famous women just because they’re over 30 years old, most people react with a “darn, she doesn’t look good” but keep on watching the show. Well this happens with Elisue who regardless of all the conflict she had with herself, even after everything she endured in order to keep looking younger and in spite of all her suffering, she stands in front of the public, and I found it amusing how the public only scandalized until one of Elisue’s nipples come out… this reminded me what happened with Janet Jackson during 2004’s Super Bowl, where Justin Timberlake removed part of her clothes and Janet’s nipple was out, and even though something was covering it, the scandal of those seconds of the show still have consequences for her to this date, ever since her career wasn’t the same.
Another thing I remembered with that is that not long ago, Instagram faced controversy because many pictures were censored by the social network by going against their policy, they censored pictures that showed nipples, or that could be taken as one, but the thing was that only women’s pictures were censored, if any man was shirtless and both of his nipples were shown nothing happened, no censorship, scandals are always and exclusively by female nipples, and in the movie Sue showed a lot of skin and it wasn’t a scandal, that was her job and the executives knew that’s what sells, Elisue showed her irreversible alterations to her body and she didn’t look any good but still people kept watching as if nothing happened, ah but as soon as that part of her body shows, the horror screams began, some people covered their eyes or looked away in order not to see such exhibition and they all demand to kill the monster.
Elisue runs away from the public’s rejection and gets to the spot in the walk of fame where her star is placed on the ground, the little that’s left of her lays on the star that once was very visited, flawless and shinny now is all weary and cracked, reflecting the way Elisabeth Sparkle’s stardom was from beginning to end.
As I mentioned before, there are many symbolisms in the movie, it starts with a demonstration of the substance being used in an egg’s yolk creating a new one, and during the story Elisabeth is seen wearing always a coat which color is similar to that of the yolk, from my point of view that’s what shows all the time that she’s the original.
Also there are many narrow halls that Elisabeth, Sue and Elisue go through, for me those were birth and death metaphors, because as is known, it is said that in death a tunnel with a light on the end is seen, when Elisabeth decides to try the substance she walks through a long dark hall and only a white light is seen in the end where she picks up the substance, then in her apartment she walks through a hall to get to the lightened bathroom, it’s in that place where Elisabeth says goodbye to her weary version to let a new version arrive.
Something similar happens when Elisabeth loses her job and walks through a long hall at the tv studio, that hall is full of posters that show the history of her artistic career from start to finish, reach for the end of that hall carrying her belongings indicates the death of her career. And sue walks through the same halls after Elisabeth but in an opposite way, as if instead of crossing the tunnel a the end of life she goes through the way for her birth.
Another thing that caught my attention, is that at the beginning, after seeing the use of the substance on the egg, we see the placement of Elisabeth’s star in the walk of fame, and how through the years it stops being relevant and someone drops by accident a burger, leaving the piece of meat and ketchup spread over the star, and at the end of the movie over that same star lays what was left of Elisue being a piece of meat and blood spread over the star… it starts as it ends… in the world of showbusiness with all the scandals we’ve seen over the years, famous persons are still treated as pieces of meat easy to throw away and replace.
Or maybe I just over analyzed scenes that showed parallelisms from start to finish… anyway I liked that about the movie, that it has many theories material.

¡Hola comunidad cinéfila!
Vengo con otra reseña, esta vez sobre la película “La Sustancia” la cual se estrenó recientemente y no dudé en ir al cine, y de hecho la vi justo después de haber visto la de “No hables con extraños” de la cual también hice una reseña que pueden encontrar en este enlace
Creo que es una de esas películas que u odias o amas, y en mi caso la amé, testimonio de ello es que fui a verla otra vez ya que es de esas narrativas que entre más las ves más cosas le encuentras.
No les contaré como tal la trama ya que por ser película de estreno no todos la han visto y no quiero spoilear, pero sí hablaré de mis puntos de vista sobre ella.
Es una película llena de simbolismos cuya primicia es sobre obtener la oportunidad de ser una mejor versión rejuvenecida de uno mismo a base de una sustancia.
En primer lugar es una crítica directa al cómo es envejecer en la industria del entretenimiento, sobre todo para las mujeres de quienes el requisito para ser exitosas en la farándula es ser hermosas, y donde envejecer es sinónimo de dejar de ser atractivas y por tanto, dejar de ser contratadas, bien lo dijo Madonna en un discurso del 2016 de premios Billboard que en resumen dice: “Si eres una chica debes seguir el juego, se te permite ser bonita, simpática y sexy, pero no seas demasiado inteligente, no tengas una opinión que se salga de las reglas; tienes permitido ser tratada como un objeto por los hombres. Sé lo que los hombres quieran que seas. Y finalmente no envejezcas, porque envejecer es un pecado, serás criticada, atacada y definitivamente no estarás en el mercado,” chequen ese discurso, es muy bueno, dejaré el video al final.
Este punto de ya no ser considerada atractiva para la industria del entretenimiento marca el inicio de la decisión de Elisabeth Sparkle; quien en su juventud fue una exitosa y muy querida actriz; de querer recuperar eso que tuvo y volver a ser aceptada, y la sustancia le ofrece eso que tanto anhela.
La sustancia, como cualquier medicamento, tiene sus indicaciones para que el yo y el otro yo puedan coexistir en equilibrio, se alternan el control de su vida y no deben olvidar que son una misma persona; en sí son indicaciones simples pero al momento de ejecutarlas deja de ser sencillo.
Durante el desarrollo de la historia, van siendo más notorias las características de cada una de las versiones de la protagonista, vemos como la inseguridad y el odio que Elisabeth se tiene a sí misma va creciendo, y en cambio en su contraparte joven, Sue, crece el deseo y necesidad de ser el centro de atención al grado de egoístamente acaparar el control el mayor tiempo posible ignorando a Elisabeth.
Al ver el estilo de vida de cada una parecieran ser dos personas distintas, a decir verdad a momentos yo misma olvidaba una de las reglas de la sustancia, la de no olvidar que son una misma, y las veía como personas diferentes, pero en realidad solo se hizo más evidente el miedo de Elisabeth de ser rechazada, de ser vieja, de perder relevancia y finalmente ser olvidada, Sue al igual que su contraparte original Elisabeth, siente esos mismos miedos y ni estando en un cuerpo mejorado deja de odiar el hecho de ya no ser relevante y ya no ser joven y lo demuestra al constantemente rechazar todo lo que es Elisabeth y la considera patética, rápidamente impone sus necesidades por sobre las de Elisabeth ignorando el balance que se supone deben tener.
Esta pérdida de balance se nota de manera un tanto sutil, cuando Sue al revisar el closet saca todo lo de Elisabeth y coloca solo lo suyo, ignora que Elisabeth necesitará sus cosas cuando vuelva a retomar el control de su vida mientras la versión joven duerme.
A mi punto de vista, Elisabeth está muy intoxicada por el modo en que la industria del entretenimiento se mueve, ya que ella misma se trata como un objeto y no como una persona y esto lo denota tanto en su versión joven como la actual, en el modo en que el cuerpo en turno trata al que está en reposo, se dejan tiradas en el suelo como si fueran una simple prenda que ya usaron y la dejan a la mano porque en algún momento la van a tener que usar otra vez, y cuando a Sue ya no le gustó esa prenda porque le pareció molesta simplemente la echa a un rincón oscuro.
Ninguna de las dos se respeta mutuamente, lo que marca mucho el hecho de que ni con la sustancia que supuestamente crearía una mejor versión de ella misma pudo hacer que Elisabeth se aceptara, respetara y quisiera a sí misma, simplemente no se hizo mejor persona y solo aceleró la decadencia que tanto temía y caída en su carrera y su vida.
Romper ese balance consume a ambas, Elisabeth al ver el daño que Sue le ha hecho al romper el balance decide terminar el tratamiento, para ello le llega otra sustancia que terminará con Sue pero a último momento se arrepiente ya que se da cuenta que Sue es, a final de cuentas, todo lo que Elisabeth quiere ser, Sue está recibiendo todo el amor y aceptación de las que Elisabeth en la cúspide de su carrera gozaba. Este arrepentimiento de último momento lleva a que físicamente ambas se vean cara a cara por primera vez estando ambas conscientes, y el disgusto por ella misma con el que Elisabeth ha cargado por mucho Sue lo externa de forma muy directa al atacar a Elisabeth cegada por haber visto que quería deshacerse de ella, y en Elisabeth es notorio el miedo que tiene al ver la reacción de Sue, sin duda Elisabeth sabe lo que Sue es capaz de hacerle por rechazo a su apariencia y acciones porque como recordemos, son la misma persona, y esto indica que Elisabeth sabe lo que ella misma es capaz de hacer por luchar contra su propia decadencia y seguir siendo el centro de atención.
Este enfrentamiento ocurre justo antes de una presentación de año nuevo que lanzaría a Sue al estrellato más allá de ser la host de un programa de ejercicios, y Sue al rechazar su versión original y terminar con ella se condena a sí misma ya que no puede existir sin Elisabeth… y a pesar ello, lo que le sigue importando es alcanzar la fama y seguir siendo relevante en el espectáculo.
Sue, en su desesperación por esa aceptación y ese éxito, repite las acciones que hizo como Elisabeth, es decir, ver la sustancia como una solución y querer ser una versión mejorada que no esté metafórica y literalmente cayéndose en pedazos dejando de existir.
Volver a usar la sustancia crea un horrendo híbrido deforme de Elisabeth y Sue, y así conocemos al monstruo Elisue. Y ahora que lo pienso, sí crea una mejor versión, pero no lo refleja en lo físico sino que se acrecentan las características de Elisabeth/Sue, siendo esas características la obsesión de seguir siendo exitosa, el deseo desesperado de ser aceptada y ser amada por el público.
Elisue va a la presentación, y la manera en que el público reacciona a ella se me hizo una representación muy directa de cómo el público actúa con los famosos, el público de Elisue aunque ven su apariencia no reaccionan mucho, pues estamos acostumbrados a ver famosas que se someten a infinidad de cirugías que las hacen cambiar totalmente su apariencia, y aunque estéticamente no se ven siempre bien, está muy normalizado ver esas cirugías en famosas solo porque ya superan los 30 años, la mayoría de la gente reacciona con un “ay que mal se ve” pero siguen viendo el espectáculo. Pues así pasa con Elisue quien a pesar de todo el conflicto que tuvo con ella misma, a pesar de todo a lo que se sometió con tal de seguir luciendo más joven y a pesar de todo su sufrimiento se presenta frente al público, y me dio risa como el público solo se escandalizó hasta que a Elisue se le sale un pezón… esto me hizo recordar lo que pasó con Janet Jackson en el super tazón del 2004, donde Justin Timberlake le quitó parte de la prenda y el pezón de Janet quedó al descubierto, y aunque tenía un adorno que la siguió cubriendo, el escandalo de esos segundos de presentación siguen teniendo consecuencias para ella hasta la fecha, ya que desde entonces su carrera no fue la misma.
También recuerdo que no hace mucho, en Instagram se hizo controversial que muchas fotos fueron censuradas por la red social por infringir sus políticas, ya que se censuraron fotos que mostraban pezones, o que pudieran ser tomados como pezones, pero el detalle fue que solo eran censuradas las fotos de mujeres, si algún hombre salía en una foto sin camiseta y sus dos pezones se mostraban no pasaba nada, no había censura, siempre los escándalos son única y exclusivamente por pezones femeninos, y en la película Sue mostró mucha piel y no escandalizaba, ese era su trabajo y los ejecutivos saben que eso es lo que vende, Elisue mostró alteraciones irreversibles a su físico y no se veía nada bien y aún así la gente se quedó viendo como si nada, ah pero solo sale esa parte de su cuerpo y empiezan los gritos de horror, algunos se cubren los ojos o miran a otro lado con tal de no ver tal exhibicionismo y surgen las exigencias de matar a ese monstruo.
Elisue huye del rechazo del público y llega hasta el lugar del paseo de la fama en donde está colocada su estrella en el suelo, lo poco que queda de ella yace sobre la estrella que alguna vez fue muy visitada, lucía impecable y brillosa y ahora está desgastada y quebrada, reflejando así el cómo fue el estrellato de inicio a fin de Elisabeth Sparkle.
Como mencioné antes, hay muchos simbolismos en la película, inicia con una demostración de la sustancia siendo usada en la yema de un huevo de la cual surge una nueva, y a lo largo de la historia se ve a Elisabeth usando siempre un abrigo de color similar a la yema de un huevo, lo que según mi opinión es lo que hace ver que ella es en todo momento la original.
También hay muchos pasillos estrechos que Elisabeth, Sue y Elisue recorren, a mi se me figuraron metáforas de muerte y nacimiento, ya que como muchos sabemos, se dice que al morir se ve un túnel con una luz al final, cuando Elisabeth decide iniciar con la sustancia, atraviesa un pasillo largo y oscuro y solo se ve la luz blanca al final en donde recoge la sustancia, después en su departamento recorre un pasillo hasta llegar al alumbrado baño, es en ese lugar donde Elisabeth dice adiós a su versión acabada para dar paso a alguien nueva. Algo similar ocurre cuando Elisabeth pierde su trabajo y atraviesa un pasillo largo en el estudio de grabación, el pasillo lleno de posters que muestran el historial de su carrera artística de inicio a fin, al llegar al final del pasillo cargando la caja con sus pertenencias indica la muerte de su carrera. Y Sue recorre los mismos pasillos después de Elisabeth pero a la inversa, como si en vez de cruzar el túnel al final de la vida, atraviesa el canal por el cual nace.
Otra cosa que llamó mi atención, es que al inicio luego de ver el uso de la sustancia en el huevo, vemos la instalación de la estrella de Elisabeth en el paseo de la fama, y como a través del tiempo va dejando de ser una novedad y alguien deja caer por accidente una hamburguesa dejando el trozo de carne y cátsup esparcidos sobre la estrella, y al final de la película sobre esa misma estrella yace lo poco que queda de Elisue siendo un trozo de carne sobre sangre esparcidos sobre la estrella… comienza como termina… en el mundo de la farándula con todos los escándalos que se han visto por años, no deja de tratar a las personas famosas como trozos de carne fáciles de desechar y reemplazar.
O tal vez solo sobre analicé escenas que mostraban paralelismos de inicio a fin … en fin, eso me gustó de la película, que tiene mucho material para sacar teorías.
