CineTV Contest: 21 Blackjack (ENG/ESP)
It's been a long time since the last time I was here... I didn't think it would take me so long to come back... anyway, I got back just in time to entry to this contest and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to participate.
So this week's contest is about money, who doesn't like money? and my favorite movie about it is 21 Blackjack, a 2008 film directed by Robert Luketic and starring Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Laurence Fishburne.
Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde la última vez que estuve aquí...no pensé que me tomaría tanto tiempo regresar... en fin, regresé justo a tiempo para entrar a este concurso y no me quería perder la oportunidad de participar.
El concurso de esta semana es sobre dinero, ¿a quién no le gusta el dinero? y mi película favorita al respecto es 21 Blackjack, un filme de 2008 dirigida por Robert Luketic y protagonizada por Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth y Laurence Fishburne.
What is it about?
We follow Ben Cambpell's story, an MIT student who wants to get into Harvard and become a doctor, to do so he needs a huge amount of money so he wants to get a scholarship.
He's a good student, he works hard and is really good with numbers. His intelligence is noted by Micky Rosa, one of his teachers. Mr. Rosa has a past as a gambling man, he used to count cards in order to win a lot of money at several casinos in Las Vegas, but since the head security man from one of the casinos Micky played has been after him, Micky stopped playing but still found a way to make money, he recruits his smartest students to teach them how to count cards while playing Blackjack.
Micky wants Ben in his team of players, and Ben agrees, he knows this is his chance to gather enough money for Harvard.
¿De qué trata?
Seguimos la historia de Ben Campbell, un estudiante del MIT que quiere entrar a Harvard y ser doctor, para lograrlo necesita una gran suma de dinero así que quiere obtener una beca.
Es un buen estudiante, trabaja duro y es muy bueno con los números. Su inteligencia es notada por Micky Rosa, uno de sus profesores. El sr. rosa tiene un pasado como apostador, solía contar cartas para ganar mucho dinero de varios casinos en Las Vegas, pero desde que un jefe de seguridad de uno de los casinos donde jugaba ha estado tras el, Micky dejó de jugar pero encontró una manera de hacer dinero, recluta a sus estudiantes más inteligentes para enseñarles a contar cartas jugando Blackjack.
Micky quiere a Ben en su equipo, y Ben acepta, sabe que es su oportunidad de reunir el suficiente dinero para Harvard.
The group of gamblers set up a whole system with signals and fake identities, every weekend they go to Las Vegas to gamble and everytime they win loads of money.
Everything seems to go fine, Ben is saving all the money for Harvard and is having the time of his life, but since this new hobby is so time consuming, he stops hanging out with his friends, his mind is elsewhere and the things that were important to him before go to second place.
Todo parece marchar bien, Ben está ahorrando todo el dinero para Harvard y está teniendo el mejor momento de su vida, pero ya que este nuevo pasatiempo consume mucho tiempo, deja de frecuentar a sus amigos, su mente está en otro lado y lo que le era importante pasa a un segundo plano.
One day, Ben gets upset after fighting with his friends who leave him out of a robotics project they had been working for a long time, they kicked Ben out because they could see he wasn't totally interested in it anymore.
To distract himself, Ben goes to gamble as usual, but this time he doesn't listen to his gambling partners when they warn them the cards aren't favorable for a winning, in consequence he loses a big bet, the problem was, it was not only his money the one he lost but money that belonged to the whole group. Micky wasn't pleased with this attitude so the teacher leaves the group. They want to go back to Boston but Ben convinces them to keep playing, that way all the money they win will be theirs and wouldn't have to share it with Micky.
Everything goes as planned at first, but Cole Williams, the head security man who has been after Micky for years, discovers the group had been counting cards to win, he catches Ben and after beating him up he lets him go but warns Ben he doesn't want to see him in his casino anymore.
Ben returns to Boston only to find out that Micky stole all the money Ben had been saving the whole time for Harvard, as a revenge and payment of what Ben lost at a reckless hand.
Para distraerse, Ben va a apostar como siempre, pero esta vez no escucha a sus compañeros de juego quienes le advierten que las cartas no le son favorables para ganar, en consecuencia pierde una gran apuesta, el problema fue que no solo perdió su dinero sino el dinero que pertenecía a todo el grupo. Micky no estaba nada contento con esta actitud así que el profesor deja al grupo. Ellos quieren regresar a Boston pero Ben los convence de seguir jugando, de esa manera el dinero que ganen será de ellos y no tendrán que compartirlo con Micky.
Todo va acorde a lo planeado al inicio, pero Cole Williams, el jefe de seguridad que ha estado tras Micky, descubre que el grupo ha estado contando para ganar, atrapa a Ben y luego de darle una paliza lo deja ir pero le advierte que no quiere volver a verlo en su casino.
Ben regresa a Boston solo para descubrir que Micky le robó todo el dinero que ha estado ahorrando para Harvard, como venganza y pago por lo que Ben perdió en su juego descuidado.
Ben goes to Jill, one of the group of gamblers, to ask for help, he tells her that Micky took everything and doesn't know what to do.
Ben talks with his old friends and tells them everything, they understand his situation and forgive him now that they know what he was going through. Ben also talks with Micky, he says he wants to go back to playing but in order to gather more money than before, Micky should be one of the players too. Micky thinks about it but eventually agrees. The group is together again and in disguise they start gambling and making money.
But the twist comes when we find out that Ben is tricking Micky, Ben and Cole had come to an agreement when Cole catched him, the security man told him back then that he only wanted to catch Micky and retire, and Ben gives him just what he wants. Ben not only had the main group gambling but he also secretly recruited his old friends to play too, so when Cole catched Micky and kept the money they won, the group didn't lose any winnings this time because the second group earned very good amount of money.
Ben gets not only the money to get into Harvard but also a great experience to talk about as his essay to get in.
Ben acude a Jill, una del grupo de apostadores para pedirle ayuda, le dice que Micky se llevó todo y no sabe qué hacer.
Ben habla con sus viejos amigos y les cuenta todo, ellos entienden su situación y lo perdonan ahora que saben lo que atravesó. Ben también habla con Micky, le dice que quiere regresar a jugar pero para poder juntar aun mas dinero. Micky deberá ser otro de los jugadores. Micky lo piensa y eventualmente acepta. El grupo está reunido otra vez y disfrazados comienzan a apostar y ganar dinero.
Pero el giro llega cuando nos damos cuenta que Ben está engañando a Micky, Ben y Cole llegaron antes a un acuerdo cuando Cole lo atrapó, el jefe de seguridad le dijo en ese entonces que solo quiere atrapar a Micky y retirarse, y Ben le da justo lo que quiere. Ben no solo tenía al grupo principal apostando sino que también reclutó secretamente a sus viejos amigos también, de esa manera cuando Cole atrapó a Micky y se quedó con el dinero ganado, el grupo no perdió ninguna ganancia esta vez ya que el segundo grupo ganó una buena suma de dinero.
Ben no solo consigue el dinero para entrar a Harvard sino que también obtiene una buena experiencia de la cual hablar como ensayo para entrar.
Why I like it
I don't know how to play blackjack, so when they explain how to count I'm totally lost... but I like the clever plan they come up with, it's interesting how they have a special word for every number, so when the player comes to the table, the other player who had been counting says the special word in a sentence and the main gambler knows how's the game going and makes a big bet.
I wish I could come up with such a way to make money fast and have fun while doing it. Technically they're stealing but they do it in such a smart way that it's relatable, and makes me wonder how many ways there are to cheat while playing cards.
It easy to empathize with Ben because we all had been in a situation like that, where you want to get something but the lack of money stops you and it doesn't matter how hard you work or how many extra hours you get, it's simply not enough for your bigger goal, it could be school, or get a home, travel, get married, get a medical treatment you need... whatever goal it is but money is the first thing you need. And Ben is a good guy who doesn't harm anybody with this, he's not a thief, he just wants to make the best out of the chance that comes in front of him.
Also it's interesting to see how fast they come up with new identities in an instant and how they try to balance their normal lives with the glamorous Vega's lifestyle, seems like fun until they get caught.
Por qué me gusta
No se como jugar blackjack, así que cuando explican como contar estoy totalmente perdida... pero me gusta el plan ingenioso que crean, es interesante como tienen una palabra especial para cada número, así cuando el jugador llega a la mesa, el otro jugador que ha estado contando dice la palabra especial en una oración y el apostador principal ya sabe como va el juego y apuesta en grande.
Desearía poder idearme una manera como esa para hacer dinero rápido y divertirme al hacerlo. Técnicamente están robando pero lo hacen de una manera tan ingeniosa que es entendible, y me hace preguntar cuántas maneras hay para hacer trampa en juegos de cartas.
Es fácil empatizar con Ben porque todos hemos estado en una situación como esa, donde quieres algo pero la falta de dinero te frena y no importa cuan duro trabajes o cuantas horas extra acumules, simplemente no es suficiente para tu meta más grande, puede ser los estudios, o comprar casa, viajar, casarse, obtener el tratamiento médico que necesites... cualquiera que sea la meta pero el dinero es lo primero que necesitas. Ben es un buen chico que no hace daño a nadie con esto, no es un ladrón, el solo quiere sacar el mayor provecho a la oportunidad que se le presenta.
También es interesante ver como sin problemas idean toda una nueva identidad en poco tiempo, y como tratan de balancear sus vidas normales con el estilo de vida glamoroso de Las Vegas, se ve divertido hasta que los atrapan.
