If there is a director whose debut deserves to be seen without fail, it is the experienced Martin Scorsese, who on this occasion has managed to carry out one of his most ambitious projects: the adaptation of David Grann's novel "The Moon Killers: Oil, Money, Murder and the Making of the FBI". With this film, Scorsese seeks to recreate the United States of a century ago, in a project that stands out for its narrative audacity and its use of a generous budget.

The result is an excellent film that fuses several genres, where all the technical and artistic details have been meticulously taken care of. The script, written by Scorsese himself in collaboration with the talented Eric Roth, manages to keep the viewer's interest from beginning to end, despite its three and a half hour length. It achieves this without resorting to a riddle for the audience to decipher, but rather following Alfred Hitchcock's premise that the viewer must be one step ahead of some characters in relation to the central enigma.

Con esta película, Scorsese busca recrear el Estados Unidos de hace un siglo, en un proyecto que destaca por su audacia narrativa y su aprovechamiento de un generoso presupuesto.

El resultado es una excelente película que fusiona diversos géneros, donde se han cuidado meticulosamente todos los detalles técnicos y artísticos. El guion, escrito por el propio Scorsese en colaboración con el talentoso Eric Roth, logra mantener el interés del espectador de principio a fin, a pesar de su extensión de tres horas y media. Lo logra sin recurrir a un enigma que el público deba descifrar, sino siguiendo la premisa de Alfred Hitchcock de que el espectador debe ir un paso por delante de algunos personajes en relación con el enigma central.

These include Mollie's relatives or friends, as well as the white men with whom Ernest and William interact. Another key aspect that contributes to the film's excellence is its outstanding cast, led by a Leonardo DiCaprio who delivers a superb performance in the role of Ernest Burkhart. DiCaprio manages to convey much without resorting to exaggeration, capturing the calm and innocence of his character convincingly. On the other hand, there is the role of William Hale, played by Robert De Niro, who brings a more histrionic approach compared to the protagonist. However, this acting choice fits the needs of the character perfectly, and the veteran American actor manages to pull it off remarkably well, without the need for overacting.

The film's great find is Lily Gladstone, an actress relatively unknown to the general public, but who was discovered by Kelly Reichardt in "Certain Women: Lives of Women" (2016) and later in "First Cow" (2019). Gladstone delivers a superb performance in the role of Mollie, a character who is hard not to become attached to, and who goes through tonal shifts believably, conveying a wide range of emotions, from smiles to anger. Gladstone's choice for the role of this young woman belonging to the Osage tribe proves to be a wise choice.

Scorsese demonstrates a masterful command of depth of field in the outdoor scenes and presents the scenes with great elegance, such as the memorable entrance of the protagonists into the courtroom. His direction is distinguished by its sobriety and his ability to bring out the essence of each scene in a powerful way.

Acompañando a estos personajes principales, aparecen algunos personajes secundarios que en general no están tan bien desarrollados. The soundtrack composed by Brian McOmber helps to immerse us in the atmosphere of the time and place, being remarkably evocative and without falling into repetition, despite presenting a central theme that is heard on several occasions with small variations. In addition, the magnificent work in the recreation of the period and the costume design by Jacqueline West stand out as two brilliant artistic aspects that underline the lust for human power, a theme present both in the present and throughout history, where oil represents both money and power. This attention to detail in the technical and artistic aspects contributes greatly to the richness and depth of the film, which offers a penetrating insight into human nature and its relationship to power and ambition.

A film that I would recommend to almost anyone for its subject matter and pacing, as it can appeal to both young and more mature audiences, and is definitely worth seeing on the big movie screen.

As a negative point, it can be noted that some secondary characters do not receive adequate development and seem to be wasted in the plot. This can detract from the complexity and depth of the story, leaving certain aspects not fully explored.
