What began as a hit-and-run case becomes the revelation of a twisted web of almost unbelievable events.

Following the testimonies, Skye Borgman adheres to the chronological order of the continuous twists and turns encountered during the investigation rather than the events themselves. This structure gradually captivates the viewer, adding increasingly sordid and twisted details until the sad story of Tonya Hughes/Sharon Marshall is fully unveiled.

Tonya Hughes is found in a ditch in what appears to be a hit-and-run case. After her death in her twenties, she leaves behind her son Michael and her husband, Clarence Hughes, who immediately becomes the object of suspicion. The police hand Michael over to a foster family, but when Clarence kidnaps him, a frantic search against the clock begins, drawing the attention of the media. It is then that people from Tonya's past contact the investigators, revealing the first shocking truth: Tonya and Clarence were once known as Sharon and Warren Marshall, father and daughter.

The documentary The Girl in the Picture is remarkably well structured despite the chaos of information and the diversity of witnesses, each representing a different stage in the lives of Sharon/Tonya and Warren/Clarence. Although at times the viewer might feel lost, Skye Borgman shows skill in re-directing the narrative, except perhaps in the final moments. Skillfully, we gradually unravel Sharon's life, then delve into that of the man who always guided her. The story, as we discover, begins much earlier than we imagined and extends far beyond what we expected.

Enthusiasts of the true crime genre are in luck with this product that has it all. Sinister crimes, almost implausible truths, a tangled investigation, an untimely death, testimonies that add a shocking human touch to the narrative and a victim of his own life. The ingredients simmer, allowing the viewer to savor every detail for more than an hour and a half.

With Abducted in Plain Sight, the director demonstrated her narrative skill in this type of story. Highly recommended, Skye Borgman took us through the story of another young girl subjected to an adult, which at times could seem unbelievable. However, Borgman knew how to navigate the difficulties of her protagonist's story. In The Girl in the Picture, Sharon is unable to tell her own story, but Borgman manages to portray the young woman impeccably, allowing us to immerse ourselves in her life by stepping back little by little from her tragic outrage. Skye Borgman, a name we will follow closely, delivers one of the best true crime on the Netflix platform, consolidating it once again as a favorite for those of us who love this genre so well crafted in recent years.
