Magic, Music, and Spectacle: Aladdin (2019) Review.

As someone who fell in love with the 1992 Disney classic Aladdin seeing this moving was a huge interest feeling and expectations.

Before review, first, let’s talk about Jasmine. Naomi Scott was a revelation. I hadn’t known much about her before this, but her performance completely won me over. Her rendition of "A Whole New World" was breathtaking, and her two new solos showcased a voice that felt pure, unique, and refreshingly authentic. She brought a modern, empowering energy to the role without feeling forced or over-the-top—a perfect balance that resonated, especially as a father of two young girls.

Jafar, on the other hand, was a mixed bag. While his obsession with power and throne-grabbing ambition came through, his voice lacked the commanding, classic villainy of Jonathan Freeman’s 1992 performance. Still, the character worked overall and served the story well enough.

As for Aladdin, he had the charm, the moves, and the look, but his vocal performance occasionally felt restrained. Perhaps it’s the shadow of Brad Kane’s unforgettable original singing, but some lines seemed clipped or hesitant. That said, he carried the role effectively and kept me engaged.

Visually, the movie was a feast. The costumes were dazzling, the sets immersive, and the vibrant colors brought Agrabah to life in stunning detail. Every scene felt intricately crafted, and I imagine the 3-D experience would have been even more spectacular.

And now, the Genie. Let’s get this out of the way: Robin Williams’ iconic performance is untouchable. But Will Smith? He didn’t try to replicate it—he made it his own. His charisma, humor, and vocal energy turned the Genie into a fresh, entertaining powerhouse. Smith brought his signature charm while paying homage to the role, and it worked beautifully.

Overall, this Aladdin is a treat for all ages. Whether you’re revisiting childhood memories or introducing the story to a new generation, it’s a journey worth taking. I’d give it a solid 8/10—fun, heartfelt, and visually stunning.

I'm not a sucker for animations but i do watch some. I remember 'Coco' and how i enjoyed it. I'll see the trailer of this one and if it interests me enough, I'll watch it. Thanks for sharing.
