Factions Before Blood | Divergent Film Review

I liked the idea of factions within a community, each of them with unique traits that serve the system in specific ways, to prevent future conflict and create lasting peace. In the dystopian world of the film Divergent, how the world would run with this system of factions piqued my interest. And then, the next thing I knew, I was eager to see the next part of the series.

I had always seen Divergent around, but I never gave it much thought—for 10 years! Now that I have seen how entertaining a film it is, I wonder how I managed to miss it all this time. I particularly enjoyed it for its refreshing storyline, drama, and cast.

In a futuristic world, people are divided into factions. When Beatrice Prior realises that she does not fit into any of the factions, she must hide her identity to escape the wrath of powerful forces. _Google

The narration at the beginning of how the world turned into what it is in the film got me hooked right away. It was a soliloquy by the main character, Tris Prior. It was an explanation of the factions and how the faction system works. It immediately got me excited for what was to come.

The storyline of the film starts with a gentle pace, builds up momentum gradually and steadily, and then the ending was the most entertaining, mostly because of the mix of action and love.

And the dialogue, particularly, is something I really appreciate. It was all natural and coherent. There were splashes of humour every now and then, making it enjoyable. I liked how there were subtle sarcasms sometimes, but nothing forced in them.

Each faction—Amity, Candour, Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless—were consistently represented for what they stood for in the film. Well, there were about two factions that I didn't see much of in the film. The film was mostly concentrated on three out of all the factions, and they were the ones that were unique to the main character, who turned out to be "divergent."

I like to think that the factions in the film are like the categories we put people into sometimes. For example, we categorise people in our societies based on their professions, interests, or beliefs. And each category, like the factions in Divergent, comes with its own norms and set of expectations. The concept of being "divergent," however, challenges these categories and highlights the uniqueness of individuals who don't exactly "fit in."

It felt as though the film was going to be a superhero kind of film, but it really wasn't. I was rather glad that it wasn't, actually. It was all realism and more of a reflection of what we see with categories in reality.

Dystopian, but it has some futuristic concepts, such as the kind of technology they were using in the film. It was all fascinating to enjoy, aside from the film's storyline.

It may have been made in 2014, but it could still pass as a good film even if it were released in 2024, even though there is a wide gap between the differences between then and now in how films are made.

The acting is one of the most endearing things for me in the film, with how the actors performed. Just like the dialogue, I appreciate how well done everyone of the main actors was with their characters.

The film soundtrack, also, is commendable. The songs were not in the way, but they sure were mostly coming in at the right time, and they were enjoyable too.

Apparently, there is a series, and there are two more films, or sequels. I haven't seen them yet, but I am eager to see how the story continues and where the writers take it. Divergent, the first film, gave the series a great start, so I imagine that it must have had fans for a long time.

The film is getting an 8/10 from me. It's something just about anyone can watch and enjoy. I only hope that they keep up the energy in the sequels. Sadly, the sequels aren't on Netflix, but I'll get around watching them somehow.
