Monster-in-law - Flight or fight (Movie Review)

The feeling of loosing overdue braids on a sensitive scalp that wouldn't hesitate to send a wave of pain through your body at every little pull and finding something that can take your mind off the stress in that moment, is very underrated. I was loosing my hair and then, I came across this film titled Monster-in-law. The title alone was intriguing enough and when I checked through the little description given, I had a feeling I was going to enjoy this one. So I settled for it and it definitely helped ease the stress.

Monster-in-law is a 2005 American comedy stars Jennifer Lopez, Jane Fonda and Michael Vartan. It follows Charlie, a yoga instructor and dog walker. She is warned by Fiona to stay away from Kevin, who she rumoured to be gay. But her first encounter with him proves to be more than she ever envisaged. All efforts of hers to abandon the guy, proves furtive when she asks him a question and he responds with an answer, someone who is just meeting for the first time would not be able to answer. Except of course, one who is insanely attracted to you and doesn't fail to notice the little things. She accepts go out with him with him another day and that marks the beginning of their beautiful journey as a couple. But there is one setback. He is a mummy's boy to an overly dramatic mother. But Charlie herself is no stranger to drama.

I'm beginning to wonder why I never liked this genre before. The number of amazing films I came across during this past holiday that were of this genre, makes me wonder why. Is it that recent American romcoms of these days no longer understand the real idea behind romantic comedies that they just end up with cringe productions or am I just not finding the good and recent ones for myself? All the American romantic comedies I've watched and actually enjoyed, were produced sometime between the early 2000s to 2016. I'm beginning to love this genre and I'll also admit that I look forward to watching more of it.

Let it be known that this is another of the dramas that made me fall completely in love with American romcoms particularly. Normally, I don't like plots like these. The mother-in-law, being mean to the daughter-in-law because she doesn't want her for her son. I find them more annoying than entertaining but I liked this one probably because Charlie was defiant and had the right amount of energy someone related to Viola needed. So when she began to give back what was given to her, I found it very satisfying.

This is one of those movies that did not need too much characters to achieve what it tried to portray. It revolved round three characters. Charlie, Viola and Kevin. The characters, although very few, still made the movie a worthy watch. Viola being overly dramatic did not cringe me out (A first). Instead I saw myself laughing through everything. I liked Charlie herself. She was not in anyway, a boring character and I get why Kevin fell in love with her. I liked her too. I believe she's the reason why I enjoyed the film so much. If not for her, Viola would have been such an unbearable character. That woman was so hard to handle. The fact that Charlie gave back to her the right amount of crazy she deserved was something I really liked. Because tell me why it's 2am and you're screaming in the middle of the night because you think your son will abandon you. If not for Charlie Kevin as a character was pretty much mien. Apart from his first impression on Fiona, there really anything more to like about him.

Anyways, I enjoyed the humour in this show a lot. It was good enough to make me forget the initial pains I was going through loosing my hair. This was a good watch for me and if you're looking for a not too intense show, you can check this out.

I'll rate this movie a 7/10. It was an entertaining watch and I definitely look forward to finding more interesting shows under this genre.

Thanks for reading.

I can relate a lot to what you're saying because I made the conclusion myself that movies after 2016-2018 just don't do it for me. It's even more glaring in certain genres, especially ones like these. Either trying too hard to be funny or not just doing it right. Either way, I'm glad you had the thrill you wanted. Will add this to my watchlist as well. Nicely done.🌺
