Documentary Review | You Are What You Eat: The Twin Experiment

Hello friends, I really liked the idea of writing posts on the topic of Movie Review. As I noticed you liked it too! I'm very happy about that, so I'm continuing! In a very short period of time, I watched a mini-series on Netflix called "You Are What You Eat: The Twin Experiment". This mini-series can be categorized as a documentary and sociocultural genre. If you ever asked yourself the question "I really wonder where that chicken we had for dinner last night was from?", then you most likely just need to watch this mini-series. The truth will not be pleasant...

Let's not right away talk about the bad. In fact, the series is very informative and everyone will be able to make certain conclusions after watching. But I want to warn you at once - it is better not to eat food while watching this series.

The point of the series is to experiment on 22 pairs of identical twins. But only 4 pairs of twins actively participated in the process of filming the series. Their health indicators were almost identical, which allowed the experiment to be more accurate.

So, each pair of twins was divided into "omnivores" and "plant-based food". For the first 4 weeks, the creators of the project sponsored the participants and sent boxes of certain foods. After that, for the next 4 weeks, participants had to maintain a specific diet and buy and prepare their own food by themself. During this time, the participants were actively exercising, which was also supposed to influence the results of the experiment.

What is most interesting is that all participants were checked for percentage of subcutaneous fat, fat on internal organs, bone density, muscle mass, and biological analysis. These procedures were repeated at the beginning and at the end of the experiment to see the results and to say which diet is better for humans "omnivores or only plant-based food?".

Each series also highlighted the environmental issues created by maintaining different farms. For example, the Amazon forests are actively cut down to build new "pastures" for cows on those territories. After all, beef is in huge demand all over the world. But the truth is quite different. Cows don't live in their usual wild environment, they literally crowd into small patches of land eating high calorie foods. It's the same reality with chickens and pigs. It is profitable for farmers to quickly fatten up animals and the methods are absolutely not humanistic.

I don't want to tell you all the things I've learned from this documentary. Because it is better to immerse yourself in this atmosphere and draw conclusions. I will only add the final part about the impact of agriculture on the environment. The environmental damage caused by agriculture is 34%, while the damage caused by all transportation on the Earth is only 17%. "Just imagine that every time you eat a steak - the forests burn" - this phrase will stay in my mind for a long time...

The most awesome part of this series was about replacing animal products with plant-based ones. How to make vegan pizza without losing the flavor and properties of the real one was explained by Miyoko Schinner, a researcher and owner of Miyoko`s plant-based dairy company!

I really started to think about cutting down on my meat consumption. After all, at what cost does it get on our tables? Also, I don't want to scare anyone with these stories, I just want to share my opinion and give a reason to think about what is happening right now. After all, if not people, who will save our planet? We need to act now! I highly recommend watching this wonderful mini-series. You and understand a lot of things. Share your thoughts in comments. Thanks, I'm just in a process of becoming more conscious with my eating, I've watched other documentaries on Netflix about this. but, not this one yet. I'm going to watch it, it's a good experiment.
