Tyler Perry's Divorce in the Black: Unpacking the Drama
I’ve have seen quite a number of Tyler Perry’s shows and one thing I know for sure is that I didn’t like some of them. I saw ‘If loving you is wrong’ but the show wasn’t just ending. The plot was good but I wasn’t just glued to it anymore so I gave up. I’ve also seen other shows from him but I would say, Divorce in the black is the only Tyler Perry movie I have seen to the end.
I don’t think I ever expected a movie like this from him or maybe I’m really underrating him. But yeah, I loved this one. I’m so eager to talk about this movie so let’s not waste time.
The whole movie started with violence. For a minute I’m like woah… chill. Then it started to get interesting by the minute. The movie basically starts with a fight at Dallas brother’s funeral in the church which was sparked by the pastor who was Dallas’s wife’s dad.
Apparently, Dallas’s family was full of gangsters who constantly broke the law and the Pastor and his wife couldn’t come to terms with the fact that their daughter fell in love with Dallas.
Throughout the whole show, Ava who was married to Dallas was constantly being mistreated by him yet she never left. Her family and best friend, Rona kept telling her to leave the abusive marriage she was in but I guess she thought she could change a man like Dallas.
At the end of the day, Dallas decides to divorce Ava and soon after she meets Benji, a childhood friend and they just click. Now, our boy Dallas wants his woman back like she’s his property but Ava wants none of that.
Dallas starts to get abusive and all and eventually, he loses his life as he gets shot by his wife out of self defense.
I’ve heard a lot about abusive marriages and relationships but this movie actually got me to fully comprehend and have a feel of what goes on in such relationships.
Sometimes we tend to be blinded so much by love such that we fail to see the toxic and unhealthy sides of our relationships with others. We get hit, treated like shit and accept the bare minimum when we in actual fact don’t deserve any of that.
One thing I learnt from this movie is that it takes a strong person to walk away from such relationships and it’s never too late to start over. It’s best to start over alone than to be in a place you’re not happy.
Obviously, I would rate this show an 11/10 because as I stated earlier, it’s the best Tyler Perry movie I have seen this year and I’d totally recommend it to you!
Happy Holidays!
Coming across this review just made me realize that it's been quite some time I saw a movie of Tyler Perry. Dude is really gifted.
For you to rate this 11/10 means that it is no ordinary movie.
Nicely reviewed by the way
It’s really a good one. You should see it.
