The Good Doctor: A Medical Drama with a Heart
I’ve had this series in my movie folder for as long as I can remember but I don’t know why I never got tempted to give it a try. But I eventually did when boredom hit me one day.
I’m slowly seeing myself drifting towards the whole science series genre and it’s fun if you ask me. Cos tell me why I’ve been binging this show for a week straight and I’m not even getting bored. Now, let’s dive into it.
The Plot
First, let me begin by commending the producer and writers of this show because they never seem to run out of ideas.
This show dives into the life of an upcoming surgeon with autism. Throughout the show, we see how he (Shaun Murphy) constantly proves himself out there in the surgical ward even with his medical condition.
With the help of his mentor and colleagues at work who gradually came to understand him and a way around dealing with him, i see him on a path to success as he’s always being him and doing what he does best in total honesty while paying no attention to what people think of him.
My first impression an after watching the first episode of this show was ‘ this is going to be interesting’ and so far, it’s been nothing short of that. Today I just randomly thought to myself, how come the hospital used in the show , San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital always seem to have so much drama going.
From my experience working in a hospital, it’s not always this busy at every time of the day, everyday of the week. I thought I had seen it all until someone pulled up to the ER with a stick stuck right in his chest. I’m like woah!😂 For this alone, the writers deserve a standing ovation.
But yeah, I do get their point because this whole show is supposed to be a medical drama. But then again, they did their thing by finding ways to fit in a little bit of romance and everyday living into the show. I love the who plot and every episode comes with its own surprise.
My Thoughts and Rating
For my thoughts….ha!
I would rate this show at a solid 10/10 so far even though I’m just starting the third season.
I love that the show highlights how society treats people with medical conditions and term them as not ‘normal’ humans. Most people with disabilities and medical conditions face a lot of struggles just to climb the ladder as they are given a different treatment as compared to everyone else. I have interacted with people with disabilities and medical conditions and one thing I know for sure now is that they do not want pity or preferential treatment. They just want to be treated like everyone else even though sometimes it’s not that way. This show has further highlighted the fact that disability is not inability and everyone is capable of making an impact of only they are given the chance and the benefit of the doubt.
Moving on, I’d say all characters in the show played their parts exceptionally well. I’ve seen shows where characters performed below expectations but with this, anytime you think oh, he or she is not going to do this, you’re in for a surprise.
I’m still halfway through the show but my instincts tell me it’s going to be a blast till the very end. I’d highly recommend to show everyone out there, it’s worth the time!
