To be honest, I have never seen this movie before, at least not in its entirety. Evidently I did know it for the actress, knowing her career and her iconic work in films like Kick Ass with the role of "Hit Girl", among others. However, in the case of this film that tried to be a mix of science fiction with alien invasions, post-apocalyptic worlds, action, military and teen romance; it ended up being one of the worst works of this decade. And after watching it in its entirety, now I can understand why it is so bad and why so many people criticized it at the time. Starting with the lousy work of the director -who seems not to have enough experience or knowledge to make a work with the caliber expected of this kind of stories- and the visual and production work of the film, we can intuit that this experiment was not quite what they expected it to be (because, yes, they expected to make a saga or trilogy like Divergent, Maze Runner or something like that).

Si les soy sincero, nunca antes he visto esta película, al menos no completa. Evidentemente sí la conocía por la actriz al conocer su carrera y su icónico trabajo en cintas como Kick Ass con el papel de “Hit Girl”, entre otros. Sin embargo, en el caso de esta película que intentó ser una mezcla de ciencia ficción con invasiones extraterrestres, mundos post-apocalípticos, acción, militares y romance adolescente; terminó siendo una de las peores obras que existen de esta década. Y luego de verla completa, ahora sí, puedo entender el por qué es tan mala y por qué tanta gente la criticó en su momento. Empezando por el pésimo trabajo que tuvo el director -el cual parece que no posee la suficiente experiencia o conocimiento para hacer una obra con el calibre que se espera de este tipo de historias- y el trabajo visual y de producción que tiene la película, podemos intuir que este experimento no resultó del todo lo que esperaban que fuera (ya que, si, esperaban hacer una saga o trilogía tipo Divergente, Maze Runner o algo así).

Starting the film we meet the protagonist, Cassie, who we see is a nervous teenager but with the determination to find her younger brother, the only survivor of her entire family. After seeing how the world turned into total chaos, we notice how the story is divided in two; the first part being Cassie trying to reach the base and the second part being the rest of the survivors where her younger brother is. The latter are young people and children who are now in a U.S. military base where it seems they will be trained to be part of this battle they now have with "the Others" (yes, so they call the aliens in this film). On the other hand, we see how a girl tries to meet her brother while hiding from people who are being controlled by aliens and who are watching the forest with drones and snipers. There she meets a young man who saves her life, after being shot in her leg.

Well, for starters, I'll just say that the only good thing this movie has going for it is its first act. That is, everything I told you about its plot and story so far is what is good about this work. Starting with how the world turns into chaos, with cities being flooded, power and energy cuts, planes and cars crashing and the loss of resources and security. Among these scenes are some that are well done and others that try to make more of an impact than they end up making. However, what follows later in the second and third acts is what, for me, completely ruins the experience. I understand trying to do a mix of drama with romance and action in a chaotic world in the middle of a war and all that; but to focus so much of the movie on a girl's relationship with a stranger in a forest is most unnatural in collation with everything else that's going on. Either that or the way they did it is what causes so much rejection or disinterest.

Empezando la película conocemos a la protagonista, Cassie, quien vemos es una adolescente nerviosa pero con la determinación de encontrar a su hermano menor, el único superviviente de toda su familia. Luego de ver cómo el mundo se convirtió en un caos total, notamos cómo la historia se divide en dos; siendo la primera parte el de Cassie intentando llegar a la base y la segunda parte el del resto de supervivientes donde se encuentra hermano menor. Estos últimos son jóvenes y niños que ahora se encuentran en una base militar estadounidense donde parece serán entrenados para formar parte de esta batalla que ahora tienen con “los Otros” (si, así llaman a los extraterrestres de esta película). Por otro lado, vemos cómo una chica intenta encontrarse con su hermano mientras se esconde de gente que está siendo controlada por extraterrestres y que vigilan el bosque con drones y francotiradores. Allí conoce a un joven que le salva la vida, luego de haber recibido un disparo en su pierna.

Bueno, para empezar, solo diré que lo único bueno que tiene esta película es su primer acto. Es decir, todo lo que les conté sobre su trama e historia hasta ahora es lo que está bien de esta obra. Empezando por cómo el mundo se convierte en un caos, con ciudades siendo inundadas, cortes de electricidad y energía, aviones y autos chocando y la pérdida de los recursos y de la seguridad. Entre estas escenas hay algunas que están bien hechas y otras que intentan llegar a causar un impacto más fuerte de lo que al final llega a causar. Sin embargo, lo que sigue después en el segundo y tercer acto es lo que, para mí, arruina por completo la experiencia. Entiendo que intenten hacer una mezcla de drama con romance y acción en un mundo caótico en medio de una guerra y todo eso; pero centrar gran parte de la película en la relación de una chica con un desconocido en un bosque es de lo más antinatural en colación con todo lo demás que está ocurriendo. Eso o la forma en la que lo hicieron es lo que causa tanto rechazo o desinterés.

On the other hand, there are some performances that you can clearly see that they were forced. There are scenes with so little naturalness with interactions, dialogues and expressions that are more embarrassing than total indifference, to be honest. The way the drama was directed at the beginning was also a bit forced, although I understand that with so many things to tell in such a short period of time, it is understandable that it feels that way. But what I dislike the most is the predictable plot of the movie, which from a certain part of the second act we can already see what will happen next and how or when that "big plot twist" will happen and it just feels so unoriginal that it doesn't make me want to keep watching it, to be honest. But wait, it doesn't all end here, since at the end and with the third act they give us such an absurd and far-fetched plot that is the "power of love" and all that that doesn't give more of a cringe than anything else. It's like the typical excuse they put in a generic love story, but in a movie about aliens and invasions.

I mean, I understand that what they tried to do in this movie is to reach a younger, more adolescent audience with themes like relationships between young people of different species or love triangles or things like that (kind of like what they did with Twilight). But putting that into a story like this feels so forced and poorly done that it's understandable why so many people didn't like it. The way Cassie and Evan's characters get to know each other is... odd, to take one example. While some characters are well developed, in the end the majority taking up much of the screen time detracts from what little value they have. Oh, and remember that everything we see in this movie occur in the middle of a battle, with military and young men being sent out to fight and kill with no psychological or emotional effect that we subsequently see in these characters. Then, there is the ending, one that I honestly don't like at all as it leaves many things unanswered and forces the closure of something that equally didn't start well.

Por otro lado, existen algunas actuaciones que se nota a leguas que estuvieron forzadas. Hay escenas con tan poca naturalidad con interacciones, diálogos y expresiones que dan más vergüenza ajena que indiferencia total, la verdad. La forma de dirigir el drama al principio estuvo también un poco forzado, aunque entiendo que con tantas cosas por contar en un lapso tan corto, es entendible que se sienta así. Pero lo que más me desagrada es la trama tan predecible que tiene la película, la cual desde cierta parte del segundo acto ya podemos ver lo que sucederá después y cómo o cuándo llega ese “gran plot twist” que justamente ocurre y que solo se siente tan poco original que no dan más ganas de seguir viéndola, la verdad. Pero espera, que no todo termina aquí, ya que al final y con el tercer acto nos ponen un argumento tan absurdo y rebuscado que es lo del “poder del amor” y todo eso que no da más que cringe que cualquier otra cosa. Es como la típica excusa que ponen en una historia genérica de amor, pero en una película de extraterrestres e invasiones.

O sea, entiendo que lo que intentaron hacer en esta película es llegar a un público más juvenil, más adolescente con temas como relaciones entre jóvenes de distintas especies o triángulos amorosos o cosas por el estilo (algo tipo como lo que hicieron con Crepúsculo). Pero meter esto en una historia como esta se siente tan forzado y mal hecho que es entendible por qué a tanta gente no le ha gustado. La forma en la que se conocen los personajes de Cassie y Evan es… extraño, para poner un ejemplo. Si bien algunos personajes están bien desarrollados, al final la mayoría que ocupa gran parte del tiempo de la pantalla le resta el poco valor que tienen. Ah, y recordar que todo lo que vemos en esta película ocurren en medio de una batalla, con militares y jóvenes siendo enviados a pelear y asesinar sin ningún efecto psicológico o emocional que posteriormente veamos en estos personajes. Luego, está el final, uno que sinceramente no me gusta para nada ya que deja muchas cosas sin responder y fuerza el cierre de algo que igualmente no empezó bien.

Finally, let's talk about the technical side of this film. With visual effects that only focus on one or another scene at the beginning, with catastrophes such as waves and explosions; these are absent in much of the film by showing mostly scenarios with people running in a forest or people in a military base. Thus, we see how more than an hour passes until the end in which explosions are what stands out above all. Still cameras mostly in the background, with the occasional detail of movement or tracking. The color palette of the film is mostly neutral, without much to highlight. The same goes for the sound effects, which, lacking the physical or actual appearance of the aliens - "the others" being a supposed parasite or something - we can only focus on the performances. The soundtrack is fine, although it doesn't have anything that distinguishes it from other films of this style. Anyway, this is a film that I sincerely do not recommend to watch if you are looking for something good in the science fiction genre (for that I invite you to see my other reviews).

Personally, I give it a rating of 6/10 as far as the sci-fi/action genre is concerned.

Por último, hablamos ahora del lado técnico que tiene esta película. Con efectos visuales que únicamente se centran en una que otra escena del principio, con las catástrofes como las olas y las explosiones; estos se ausentan en gran parte de la película al mostrar mayormente escenarios con personas corriendo en un bosque o gente en una base militar. Así, vemos cómo más de una hora pasa hasta que llega el final en el que las explosiones son lo que más se destaca por sobre todo. Cámaras fijas mayormente en segundo plano, con uno que otro detalle de movimiento o seguimiento. La paleta de colores que tiene la película es mayormente neutral, sin mucho que destacar. Lo mismo ocurre con los efectos de sonido que, al ausentar el aspecto físico o real de los extraterrestres -siendo “los otros” un supuesto parásito o algo así- solo podemos enfocarnos en las actuaciones. La banda sonora está bien, aunque tampoco es que posea algo que lo distinga de otras películas de este estilo. En fin, esta es una cinta que sinceramente no recomiendo ver si lo que buscas es algo bueno dentro del género de la ciencia ficción (para eso mejor te invito a ver mis otras reseñas).

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 6/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y la acción.
