One of the few good things that Warner Bros. has is this film that plays quite well with psychological horror, besides being a thriller that can generate a little nostalgia to those who are fans of the classic works of the genre of the 80s. But, unlike these works with nightmarish monsters that we all remember, in this film we see a "girl" as the antagonist (for those who saw the movie, you know why the quotation marks). And maybe this detail is what makes this film stand out from the vast majority. Many criticized the work for this, while others gave deserved credit to the actress who played this character. I personally consider that this film had a mild impact on me at the time. I haven't seen it as much as the previous movies I've brought in previous reviews, but I did get a feeling of terror, at least one or two mental trauma when I felt that I must have seen or read about this story in some real life case.

Una de las pocas cosas buenas que tiene Warner Bros. es esta cinta que juega bastante bien con el terror psicológico, además de ser un thriller que les puede generar un poco de nostalgia a los que son fanáticos de las clásicas obras del género de los años 80s. Pero, a diferencia de estas obras con monstruos con forma de pesadilla que todos recordaremos, en esta cinta vemos como antagonista a una “niña” (para los que vieron la película saben por qué las comillas). Y puede que este detalle sea lo que destaca esta película de la gran mayoría. Muchos criticaron la obra por esto, a su vez que otros le dieron el merecido mérito a la actriz que interpretó este personaje. Yo en lo personal considero que esta película me impactó medianamente en su momento. No lo he visto mucho como las anteriores películas que he traído en anteriores reseñas, pero sí me he llevado alguna que otra sensación de terror, por lo menos uno que otro trauma mental al sentir que esta historia la habré visto o leído en algún caso de la vida real.

She practically plays the role of a serial killer with all her mental problems but in the body of a 9 year old girl. The way in which every scene in which she appears shows a sense of coldness, lack of humanity and a level of cruelty and evil so great is impressive. What amazes me is how someone so small can come to cause so much damage, completely ruining a family that was already in one of its strongest periods, after a loss and other problems. Kate Coleman, who is played by Vera Farminga, is the protagonist of this story, a woman who has gone through several hard times, either because of her attempt to quit her addiction to alcohol or the death of her third daughter.

After giving life one more chance and adopting a child she hoped would replace her deceased daughter, or at least try to heal the pain of the loss, Kate and her family will now face a tough test. Well, more than an ordeal would be more accurate to call it "hell". Having negatively influenced Kate and John's relationship, having murdered a little girl, among other victims, and even trying to hurt Max and Daniel; Esther is the living representation of evil in the form of a little girl. What is revealed in the final part of the film is something that escapes a bit of reality, revealing the origin of Esther, which gives a little sense to both the inhuman strength of a 9 year old girl as well as the killer instinct she has. This character is one of the highlights of the film, without a doubt. There is also the story itself, which is not badly done, since it deals with many strong themes, as well as having a somewhat... unexpected denouement. But this is not reason enough to consider this film a "masterpiece" as I think there are much stronger psychological horror films than this one. I'm not saying it's bad either, so I give it an intermediate value.

Hablemos un poco de Esther, quien parece ser de las antagonistas de una película de terror más misteriosa y mejor desarrollada que he conocido, a pesar de que su actriz, Isabella Fuhrman, tuviera en esa época una muy corta edad. Y es que prácticamente representa muy bien el papel de asesino serial con todo y sus problemas mentales pero en el cuerpo de una niña de 9 años. La forma en la que cada escena en la que aparece demuestra una sensación de frialdad, falta de humanidad y un nivel de crueldad y maldad tan grande es impresionante. Lo que me sorprende es cómo alguien tan pequeño puede llegar a causar tanto daño, arruinando por completo a una familia que ya estaba en una de sus épocas más fuertes, tras una pérdida y otros problemas. Kate Coleman, quien es interpretada por Vera Farminga, es la protagonista de esta historia, una mujer que ha pasado por varios momentos fuertes, ya sea por su intento de dejar su adicción al alcohol o la muerte de su tercera hija.

Luego de darle un oportunidad más a la vida y adoptar a una niña que esperaba iba a sustituir a su fallecida hija, o al menos intentar curar el dolor de la pérdida, Kate y su familia ahora se enfrentarán a una dura prueba. Bueno, más que una prueba lo correcto sería llamarlo un “infierno”. Al haber influido negativamente a la relación de Kate y John, haber asesinado a una niña, entre otras víctimas, y hasta intentar lastimar a Max y a Daniel; Esther es la viva representación del mal en forma de niña. Lo que se va desvelando en la parte final de la película es algo que escapa un poco de la realidad, al revelar el origen de Esther, cosa que le da un poco de sentido tanto a la fuerza inhumana de una niña de 9 años como también ese instinto asesino que tiene. Este personaje es de lo más destacable de la película, sin duda alguna. También está la historia que en sí no está mal hecha ya que trata muchos temas fuertes, amén de tener un desenlace un tanto… inesperado. Pero que esto no sea razón suficiente como para considerar esta película una “obra maestra” ya que pienso que hay películas de terror psicológico mucho más fuertes que esta. Tampoco digo que sea mala, así que le doy un valor intermedio.

Starting with the dark tones of the photography, the cold shots with the city and the mountains full of snow, the different shots in first, second and third person highlight very well details such as the development of Esther and her attempt to join an ordinary suburban family. This, added to the well added sound effects, the voices and the almost non-existent soundtrack in certain moments of the film, highlight the difference between one scene and another. The evolution of the film's visuals from beginning to end is something that can be considered a style not often seen in popular films of this genre. In the end, it doesn't take away from the simple, fixed shots at certain moments, but that's not the only thing it has to offer. A film that has elements, story and characters that can make you think a lot about the nature of the human being and how it can become a monster itself with the right conditions for it. A film not suitable for everyone, obviously, but I don't recommend it too much either, to be honest.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 as far as the psychological horror genre is concerned.

Tomando en cuenta que es una obra en la que hasta Leonardo DiCaprio ha participado en la producción, podemos notar que en lo técnico tiene varios elementos muy destacables. Empezando por los tonos oscuros de la fotografía, los planos fríos con la ciudad y las montañas repletas de nieve, los distintos planos en primera, segunda y tercera persona resaltan muy bien detalles como el desarrollo de Esther y su intento de incorporarse a una familia suburbana común y corriente. Esto, sumado a los efectos de sonido tan bien añadidos, las voces y la banda sonora casi inexistente en ciertos momentos de la película destacan bastante la diferencia entre una escena a otra. La evolución que tiene la cinta en lo visual desde el principio hasta el final es algo que se puede considerar como un estilo no muy visto en películas populares de este género. Al final, no quita los planos sencillos y fijos en ciertos momentos, pero no es lo único que tiene para ofrecer. Una película que posee elementos, historia y personajes que te pueden hacer pensar bastante en la naturaleza del ser humano y en cómo este puede llegar a convertirse en un mismo monstruo con la condiciones adecuadas para ello. Una película no apta para todo el mundo, obviamente, pero que tampoco recomiendo mucho, la verdad.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror psicológico.
