Before I start giving my opinion, I want to make it clear that I am not a fan of Tom Cruise, although I admit the great talent he has and his dedication and commitment to his work in terms of interpretation, among other things that make him stand out above most actors. But, one thing that is certain is the impact or influence that this name has, not only in the world of cinema, but also in the science fiction genre as well as in the action genre. It is curious that this happens with an actor who has become famous only for his action scenes and extreme stunts. And, apart from this film we are talking about today, Tom has managed to participate in masterpieces of the genre such as Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds". However, in this film we can see how both his talent in the action branch is combined with his experience in alien invasion movies. With a plot that can become heavy and even confusing for some, this film is an audiovisual spectacle with good performances and a well-told story that includes time loops.

Antes de empezar a dar mi opinión, quiero dejar claro que no soy fan de Tom Cruise, aunque admito el gran talento que tiene y su dedicación y compromiso con su trabajo en cuanto a interpretación se trata, entre otras cosas que lo resaltan por sobre la mayoría de actores. Pero, algo que sí es cierto es el impacto o la influencia que este nombre tiene, no solo en el mundo del cine, sino también en el género de la ciencia ficción así como también en el género de la acción. Es curioso que esto suceda con un actor que se ha vuelto famoso únicamente por sus escenas de acción y acrobacias extremas. Y es que, aparte de esta película de la cual estamos hablando hoy, Tom ha conseguido participar en obras maestras del género como lo es la cinta de “War of the Worlds” de Steven Spielberg. Sin embargo, en esta cinta se puede ver cómo tanto su talento en la rama de la acción es combinada con su experiencia en películas de invasiones extraterrestres. Con una trama que puede llegar a ser pesada y hasta confusa para algunos, esta película es un espectáculo audiovisual con buenas interpretaciones y una historia bien contada que incluye los bucles en el tiempo.

Starting with the story, it takes us to a world in the middle of a war with a very dangerous and difficult to defeat extraterrestrial threat. While the last chance to win this war is near, we meet Major William Cage who, after the events I already mentioned above, seems to be in a "time loop" where every time he dies he goes back two days. His lack of combat experience is a huge problem when facing this alien threat, but his ability to go back in time can be useful, at least to get someone to believe him and help him in some way. After trying several times, he manages to communicate with Sergeant Rita Vrataski, who is known to be the one who led the battle at Verdun. She reveals to him that what Cage has was something she had and explains what is going on with the Mimics and their ability to control time at will. However, by having contact with one of these beings (especially a blue one larger and stranger than the others), he got the power they have to travel in time, which will serve him to find and destroy them in order to win the war.

I'm a fan of time travel and time loops. While they are elements of science fiction that have become very famous since a decade ago in cinema, there are very few movies of this style that are good or worth watching. In the case of this movie, it is the same time loop theme that caused many people to find this movie a bit tiring or difficult to watch at the time, since we practically saw the main character return to the same day and repeat everything over and over again, or well, that at least at the beginning of the movie. Then we see how the story unfolds as the protagonist manages to make certain decisions that make the timeline change, thus showing a new path, after dozens and dozens of attempts. The use of time travel at the cost of the protagonist's life is something that reminds me - as every anime fan I am - of the famous Japanese anime series Re:Zero, whose protagonist also has this same ability to go back in time every time he dies (only, of course, this anime is much more explicit, dramatic and psychological than this film).

Empezando por la historia, esta nos transporta a un mundo sumido en una guerra con una amenaza extraterrestre muy peligrosa y difícil de vencer. Mientras está cerca la última oportunidad de ganar esta guerra, conocemos al mayor William Cage quien, luego de los sucesos que ya conté arriba, parece estar en lo que sería un “bucle temporal” donde cada vez que muere este regresa dos días atrás. Su poca experiencia en combate le es un enorme problema al momento de enfrentarse a esta amenaza extraterrestre, pero su capacidad de regresar en el tiempo le puede ser de utilidad, al menos para conseguir a alguien que le crea y que lo ayude de alguna manera. Luego de intentarlo varias veces, este consigue comunicarse con la sargento Rita Vrataski, quien es conocida por ser la que lideró la batalla en Verdún. Ella le revela que lo que tiene Cage era algo que ella tenía y le explica lo que está sucediendo con el tema de los Mimics y su capacidad de controlar el tiempo a su antojo. Sin embargo, al tener contacto con uno de estos seres (en especial un azul más grande y extraño que los demás), este consiguió el poder que ellos tienen de viajar en el tiempo, lo cual le servirá para encontrarlos y destruirlos para así ganar la guerra.

Soy fan de los viajes en el tiempo y los bucles temporales. Si bien son elementos de la ciencia ficción que se han vuelto muy famosos desde hace década en el cine, hay muy pocas películas de este estilo que sean buenas o que valgan la pena ver. En el caso de esta película, es el mismo tema del bucle temporal lo que causó que a mucha gente le fuera un tanto agotador o difícil ver esta película en su momento, ya que prácticamente veíamos al protagonista regresar al mismo día y repetir todo una y otra vez, o bueno, eso al menos al principio de la película. Luego es que vamos viendo cómo la historia va desarrollándose a su vez que el protagonista consigue tomar ciertas decisiones que hacen que la línea del tiempo cambie, mostrando así un camino nuevo, después de decenas y decenas de intentos. El uso de los viajes en el tiempo a costa de la vida del protagonista es algo que me hace recordar -como todo fanático que soy del anime- a la famosa serie animada japonesa Re:Zero el cual su protagonista también posee esta misma capacidad de regresar en el tiempo cada vez que muere (solo que, claro está, este anime es mucho más explícito, dramático y psicológico que como lo es en esta película).

That's why it's normal to see his reaction at the beginning and during the movie, trying to escape or leave everything aside to not get involved in anything that would make him experience death (although in the end he always ended up dying). If it is true that I find it strange how easily the character adapts to the fact of always having to experience death at the beginning to go back in time and that his psychological state is not affected. I don't know if it's because she's military and already has experience seeing so many people die or simply because they left out that essential detail when interpreting this character.

On the other hand, we have Sergeant Rita Vrataski, who is played by Emily Blunt and who I admit did an excellent job too, being a very skilled fighter and with enough experience killing aliens, besides having lived the worst of suffering a time loop just like the protagonist does. She is everything that Cage is not at first, which is evident that we see a relationship or chemistry between these characters throughout the film. The rest of the cast and the supporting characters we meet I have almost nothing to say about them as they don't stand out beyond being just supporting characters. Now, let's talk about the Mimics, these aliens we see in the movie are both dangerous and intelligent beings (or at least that's what they make us see), with the ability to control time. While this gives the possibility to twist the plot and cause a lot of trouble, more than they already give the protagonists, we do not see them use this ability to travel in time to their advantage as much as I expected to completely conquer the world. But well, beyond this, I have nothing to say about these supposedly advanced creatures from space.

En cuanto al personaje que interpreta Tom Cruise, el mayor William Cage, es interesante ver cómo este actor hace de un militar de alto mando que, supuestamente, “no tiene experiencia en combate”. Esto lo saca un poco del mismo papel que Tom siempre interpreta del típico protagonista que sabe pelear, realizar misiones peligrosas y hasta hacer acrobacias extremas como si nada. Bueno, al menos en este caso no lo vemos hacer nada de esto al principio, sino que vemos a una persona sin experiencia en combate involucrarse en una guerra de la cual no quiere formar parte. Es por eso que es normal ver su reacción al principio y durante la película, intentando escapar o dejar de lado todo para no verse envuelto en nada que lo haga experimentar la muerte (aunque al final siempre terminaba muriendo). Si es cierto que se me hace extraño lo fácil que el personaje se adapta al hecho de tener que experimentar siempre la muerte al principio para regresar así en el tiempo y que su estado psicológico no se vea afectado. No sé si es por ser militar y ya tener experiencia viendo morir a tanta gente o sencillamente porque dejaron de lado ese detalle esencial al momento de interpretar a este personaje.

Por otro lado, tenemos a la sargento Rita Vrataski, quien es interpretada por Emily Blunt y que admito realizó un excelente trabajo también, siendo una combatiente muy hábil y con bastante experiencia matando extraterrestres, además de haber vivido lo peor de padecer un bucle temporal al igual que lo hace el protagonista. Es todo lo que al principio Cage no es, lo cual es evidente que vemos una relación o química entre estos personajes durante la película. El resto del elenco y de los personajes secundarios que conocemos no tengo casi nada de qué opinar al respecto ya que no resaltan más allá que ser únicamente personajes secundarios nomás. Ahora, hablemos del tema de los Mimics, estos extraterrestres que vemos en la película son seres tanto peligrosos como inteligentes (o al menos eso nos lo hacen ver), con la capacidad de controlar el tiempo incluso. Si bien esto da la posibilidad de torcer la trama y causar muchos problemas, más de los que ya les dan a los protagonistas, no vemos utilizar esta capacidad de viajar en el tiempo a su favor tanto como esperaba para conquistar por completo el mundo. Pero bueno, más allá de esto, no tengo nada que opinar con respecto a estas criaturas supuestamente avanzadas del espacio.

Finally, let's talk about the technical side of this successful film. Starting with the visual section with excellent visual effects and very good use of CGI, which justifies the more than 160 million dollars of budget. I am very attracted to the excellent design of the Mimics, especially for the unique style that these space creatures have. As for practical effects, explosions, fight sequences and makeup, I simply give them a 10/10. Especially in the battle scenes where we can see magnificent shots of armies of airplanes, military and Mimics in full combat. The use of moving cameras and cool color palettes with dark shades and tones is another detail that I like as well. The mix of action sequences with Tom Cruise's excellent acting and acting ability along with Emily Blunt makes this film an excellent piece of filmmaking, worthy of its genre. On the other hand, there are the sound effects and the soundtrack, which are well done, although they do not stand out enough to talk more about it. In summary, this is an excellent movie for both science fiction lovers and fans of action and especially Tom Cruise movies.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating as far as the sci-fi/action genre is concerned.

Por último, hablemos del lado técnico de esta exitosa película. Empezando por el apartado visual con excelentes efectos visuales y muy buen uso del CGI, lo cual justifica los más de 160 millones de dólares que le metieron de presupuesto. Me atrae mucho el excelente diseño de los Mimics, sobre todo por el estilo único que tienen estas criaturas espaciales. En cuanto a efectos prácticos, explosiones, secuencias de peleas y maquillaje sencillamente les doy un 10/10. Sobre todo en las escenas de las batallas donde podemos ver planos magníficos de ejércitos de aviones, militares y Mimics en pleno combate. El uso de cámaras en movimiento y las paletas de colores fríos con matices y tonos oscuros es otro detalle que me gusta también. La mezcla de secuencias de acción con la excelente capacidad de interpretar y actuar de Tom Cruise junto con Emily Blunt hace de esta película una excelente obra cinematográfica, digna de su género. Por otro lado, están los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora, los cuales están bien hechos, aunque no resaltan tanto como para hablar más al respecto. En resumen, esta es una excelente película tanto para los amantes de la ciencia ficción como para los fanáticos de la acción y en especial de las películas de Tom Cruise.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción y acción.
