I have seen many horror movies since I was very young that, looking for them today to make a review like this one, I realize how horrible they are, leaving me now with very little good material to talk about in this special. But, among my long search I remembered this film that, in particular, impressed me too much at the time when I saw it for the first time. And I'm not saying that because it has a series of chilling, gory or gruesome scenes as with the previous films I've brought you already this month, but rather because of the way the story plays with a level of suspense that you can easily feel when you watch it from the beginning. This is a style of horror that, despite being supernatural and somewhat fictional, is very close to reality, with scenarios and deaths that can be common in the daily life of a big city like the one the protagonists of this film are in. And not only that, but the plot itself, along with the way the characters act and interpret and the final outcome make this film a cult work of the genre that should still be remembered today.

He visto muchas películas de terror desde muy joven que, buscándolas el día de hoy para hacerles una reseña como esta, me doy cuenta de lo horribles que son, quedándome ahora con muy poco material bueno para hablar en este especial. Pero, entre mi larga búsqueda recordé esta cinta que, en particular, me impresionó demasiado en su momento cuando la vi por primera vez. Y no lo digo porque tenga una serie de escenas escalofriantes, sangrientas o horrendas como sucede con las anteriores películas que les he traído ya este mes, sino más bien por la forma en la que la historia juega con un nivel de suspenso que se puede sentir fácilmente al verla desde el principio. Este es un estilo de horror que, a pesar de ser sobrenatural y un tanto ficticio, se acerca mucho a la realidad, con escenarios y muertes que pueden ser comunes en la vida diaria de una gran ciudad como en la que están los protagonistas de esta película. Y no solo eso, sino la trama en sí, junto con la forma de actuar e interpretar de los personajes y el desenlace final convierten esta película en una obra de culto del género que debería de ser recordada aún al día de hoy.

Let's start talking about the main characters, the five characters we see are trapped in the elevator at the beginning of the film. This, after a case of suicide occurred outside the same building (as if it were a bad omen). They are trapped together, they don't know each other, some are afraid and doubtful that the one next to them will hurt them. They introduce themselves, get to know each other a little, but the relationships they develop from that moment on will change, degenerating into a fight, a confrontation of ears and ideals for wanting to survive. And this gets worse when they all discover that they are no saints, being all people who in the eyes of society are just scum. But, what makes this all turn into a horror movie now is the first death, something that will make everyone panic and the cops who are working on getting them out of that place now start to investigate them and keep a closer eye on them. Strange events happen during the long hours in which these five adults find themselves locked in that elevator with no escape.

I am very fascinated by how the film demonstrates very well how a simple incident like this can turn into a scene of terror. The way it conveys that tension and suspense for what will happen next, who will die, who is the killer and what is going on makes you completely hooked to the movie and watch it until the end. I already mention that all the members of this cast have done an excellent job, playing different characters with different personalities that in some way will relate to each other, but in the end they will argue, fight and even try to kill each other in order to survive. Logan Marshall-Green, who plays the ex-marine named Tony, does an outstanding job. His development is to be admired since at the beginning we only see a supposed mechanic looking for a path in his life and at the end he ends up realizing what was wrong and what he needed, after everything he had lived through. Undoubtedly, this particular case can leave a clear lesson that most of us who saw this movie understood at the time.

However, speaking more to that same ending that the film has, there are a couple of things to note. Like any ignorant person, the first time I saw it I noticed the change that the film had from being a case very similar to real life at the beginning to end up being a paranormal event with apparitions and all kinds of supernatural occurrences. The final denouement makes an impact, yes, but it ends with a somewhat stale taste in the mouth, hoping that something else would have had to happen. Maybe that ending was a bit forced, as well as maybe the habit I had back then of seeing tragic endings in gore horror movies made me think that. Anyway, I'm not saying I didn't like the ending, since as I said before it leaves a very good lesson to everyone who saw it. The style that this director or writer of this movie has is somewhat special, since you can feel how this movie is very different from the others, even though others say that it doesn't stand out at all.

Empecemos hablando de los protagonistas, los cinco personajes que vemos quedan atrapados en el ascensor al principio de la película. Esto, luego de que ocurriera un caso de suicidio afuera del mismo edificio (como si de un mal presagio se tratase). Estos quedan atrapados, no se conocen, algunos tienen miedo y dudan de que el de al lado le haga daño. Se presentan, se conocen un poco, pero las relaciones que desarrollan a partir de ese momento irán cambiando, degenerando en una lucha, un enfrentamiento de oído e ideales por querer sobrevivir. Y esto empeora cuando todos descubren que no son ningunos santos, siendo todos personas que a la vista de la sociedad son solo escoria. Pero, lo que hace que todo esto se convierta ahora en una película de terror es la primera muerte, algo que hará que todos entren en pánico y que los policías que están trabajando en sacarlos de ese lugar empiecen ahora a investigarlos y a vigilarlos más de cerca. Sucesos extraños pasan durante las largas horas en las que estos cinco adultos se encuentran encerrados en ese ascensor sin escapatoria alguna.

Me fascina mucho cómo la película demuestra muy bien cómo un simple incidente como este puede convertirse en una escena de terror. La forma en la que transmite esa tensión y ese suspenso por lo que sucederá luego, quién morirá, quién es el asesino y qué es lo que está pasando hace que te enganches por completo a la película y la veas hasta el final. Desde ya menciono que todos los miembros de este elenco de actores han realizado un excelente trabajo, desempeñando diversos personajes con personalidades diferentes que de alguna manera se relacionarán entre sí, pero que al final discutirán, pelearán y hasta se intentarán matar entre ellos con tal de sobrevivir. El que realiza un trabajo resaltante es Logan Marshall-Green, quien interpreta al ex-marine llamado Tony. Su desarrollo es digno de admirar ya que al principio solo vemos a un supuesto mecánico buscando un camino en su vida y al final termina dándose cuenta de qué es lo que estaba mal y qué era lo que necesitaba, tras todo lo que había vivido. Sin duda alguna, este caso en particular puede dejar una clara lección que la mayoría que vimos esta película la comprendimos en el momento.

Sin embargo, hablando más de ese mismo final que tiene la película, hay un par de cosas que destacar. Como cualquier ignorante, la primera vez que la vi noté el cambio que tuvo la película de ser un caso muy parecido a la vida real al principio a terminar siendo un suceso paranormal con apariciones y todo tipo de sucesos sobrenaturales. El desenlace final impacta, si, pero termina con un sabor un tanto rancio de boca, esperando que algo más hubiera tenido que pasar. Puede que ese final estaba un poco forzado, como también puede que la costumbre que tenía en ese entonces de ver finales trágicos en películas de terror tipo gore me hayan hecho pensar eso. En fin, no digo que no me haya gustado el final, ya que como dije antes deja una lección muy buena a todo el que la vio. El estilo que tiene este director o escritor de esta película es un tanto especial, ya que se puede sentir cómo esta película se distingue mucho de las demás, aunque para otros digan que no destaca mucho en lo absoluto.

On the other hand, let's talk about the technical issue, being a film with a budget of little more than 10 million dollars, it is evident that in terms of special effects, CGI or any special makeup there is not much to say since this film is absent of all this said from beginning to end. What does stand out are the photography styles, which are not very dark, but very cold, with fixed shots and some background approaches to the main characters. From the beginning we can notice that the main thing we will see are moving shots, although later these become fixed shots (since it is about five people in a cubicle trapped, evidently). Another thing to highlight are the sound effects, which are very excellently done and superimposed in a way that helps a lot to set the mood of the place, besides giving that tension to certain scenes. The soundtrack, finally, transmits that drama and that supernatural feeling with sounds that transmit very well that terror and suspense that the film has. In short, this is one of those few horror movies that with little more than a good story and good performances can catch the viewer very well.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the supernatural horror genre is concerned.

Por otro lado, hablemos del tema técnico, siendo una película más con un presupuesto poco mayor a 10 millones de dólares, es evidente que en cuanto a efectos especiales, CGI o algún maquillaje especial no hay mucho que decir ya que esta cinta se ausenta de todo esto dicho de principio a fin. Lo que sí se destaca bastante son los estilos de fotografías, los cuales no son muy oscuros, pero sí muy fríos, con planos fijos y algunos enfoques en segundo plano a los personajes principales. Desde el principio podemos notar que lo primordial que veremos son planos en movimiento, aunque luego esto pasan a ser planos fijos (ya que se trata de cinco personas en un cubículo atrapados, evidentemente). Otra cosa a destacar son los efectos de sonido, los cuales están muy excelentemente hechos y superpuestos de manera que ayudan mucho a ambientar el lugar, además de darle esa tensión a ciertas escenas. La banda sonora, por último, transmite ese drama y esa sensación sobrenatural con sonidos que transmiten muy bien ese terror y suspenso que tiene la película. En fin, esta es una de esas pocas películas de terror que con poco más que una buena historia y buenas actuaciones pueden llegar a atrapar muy bien al espectador.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror sobrenatural.
