Plot

The film tells us the life of Jesse "Jess" Aaron, who is a boy of only 12 years old who loves to draw and has very good drawing skills. Jess is part of a very humble family living in the town of Lark Creek. His father, Jack, is a strict man with his son, who always teaches him to do housework while ignoring his son's drawing skills. At school he is frequently humiliated for wearing shoes that belonged to his older sisters, as his parents couldn't even afford a new pair of shoes, among other things. His younger sister, Mary Belle is Dad's "favorite daughter", but at school she is also constantly bullied by a bully named Janice Avey. Their lives were not the best for children of their ages, but their misfortune will end later with the arrival of a new classmate.

Her name is Leslie Burke, who is the daughter of writer parents. She is the new classmate of Jess, who after a racing competition at school, he loses against her (being a race where only boys participated), which makes him reject her at first. However, they realize that Leslie is also their new neighbor, so Jess and her younger sister always go home together after school. Leslie also suffers from bullying at school because she is different from the other girls, as well as being pitted against the bully Janice. In an unguarded moment, Leslie looks at Jess's sketchbook, telling her that she really likes what she does. Little by little, the two form a unique friendship, which is strengthened even more when they discover, after a race to the woods behind their houses, a river with a rope hanging from a tree.

However, while there is a bit of fantasy in the film, it all falls into the realm of the protagonists' imagination. The story in general revolves more around something much more realistic and dramatic than expected, dealing with strong themes that at the time could become a taboo for society, but that they knew how to touch in a way that transcended time, being a classic and a jewel appreciated and valued as such today. And that is what it is, a story of two young dreamers in search of a fantastic place.

Díganme, ¿quién no ha llorado viendo esta película? Pues para su sorpresa, yo sí. Y ya con esto es prueba más que suficiente de lo maravillosa que es esta película, la cual tiene una de las historias más profundas e impactantes que se pueden encontrar en el extenso repertorio de Disney. Cosa curiosa de esta película es que, como notaron en el tráiler, en su momento ha sido vendida como una obra de fantasía similar a grandes clásicos como “Las Crónicas de Narnia”. Sin embargo, si bien tiene un poco de fantasía la película, todo esto entra en el plano de la imaginación de los protagonistas. La historia en general gira más en torno a algo mucho más realista y dramático de lo que se espera, tratando temas fuertes que en su momento pueden llegar a ser un tabú para la sociedad, pero que supieron tocar de una forma que trascendió el tiempo, siendo un clásico y una joya apreciada y valorada como tal en la actualidad. Y eso es lo que es, una historia de dos jóvenes soñadores en busca de un lugar fantástico.

It revolves around a couple of boys, Jess and Leslie, two young men who are outcasts at school and have very different personalities. While Jess is presented as a boy who has dreams of being an artist, it is his household chores and the pressure from his father and his family's economic situation that convince him to resign himself to doing what is required of him. Leslie, on the other hand, is a girl who thinks she is free and makes her own decisions, always confronting authority and defying the laws and what is right and wrong in this demanding world. Both are united by the desire to find a place that will serve as an escape from the real world, being a fantastic place that they imagine and create on the other side of the river, crossing with the rope. This place, called "Terabithia" is full of fairies, monsters and different kinds of creatures.

One of the many highlights of this story is undoubtedly the relationship of Jess and Leslie, who start out as rivals, but end up being the best friends you can find. Despite not sharing the same tastes and thoughts, one serves as support for the other always, making them a great team. The development of this wonderful relationship that we see born and grow during the film is the best thing we can enjoy about it. It's funny how the film deals with strong themes such as bullying, child abuse, depression and loss of a loved one; all this with a single and seemingly simple story full of fantasy and imagination. It is easy for anyone who sees this film to quickly feel identified with a character, since the similarity and inspiration that both the script and the original work on which it was based in real life is so strong that it is difficult to feel indifferent to any situation or moment we see in this film.

Hablemos un poco de la historia que nos cuenta esta película con solo hora y media de duración. Esta gira en torno a una pareja de chicos, Jess y Leslie, dos jóvenes que son marginados en la escuela y que tienen personalidades muy distintas. Mientras Jess nos lo presenta como un chico que tiene sueños de ser un artista, son sus labores del hogar y la presión por parte de su padre y de la situación económica de su familia lo que lo convence de resignarse a hacer lo que le exigen. A pesar de no compartir los mismos gustos y pensamientos, uno sirve como apoyo para el otro siempre, haciendo de estos un grandioso equipo. El desarrollo de esta relación tan maravillosa que vemos nacer y crecer durante la película es lo mejor que podemos disfrutar de ella. Es curioso cómo la película trata temas fuertes como el bullying, el maltrato infantil, la depresión y la pérdida de un ser querido; todo esto con una sola y aparentemente sencilla historia repleta de fantasía e imaginación. Es fácil que cualquiera que vea esta película se sienta rápidamente identificado con algún personaje, ya que la similitud y la inspiración que tiene tanto el guión como la obra original en la que se basaron en la vida real es tan fuerte que es difícil sentirse indiferente ante cualquier situación o momento que vemos en esta película.

Another detail to highlight of this masterpiece is the amount of references it has, being one of these for example the rope, which they use to cross the river to the other side. This place which they call "Terabithia" is formed by creatures that, if we notice, also have a meaning and a reference to secondary characters of the same film. Jack's relationship with his son Jess is another detail that we can extract, by showing us very valuable and evident lessons. And even though this movie is almost 20 years old, I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll just say that the final denouement is one of the strongest points, or the only strongest point that struck me from the first time I saw it. This, in addition to an incredible ending and many lessons to be learned, are what convinced me that this film is undoubtedly one of the best audiovisual works I have ever seen in my life. Leaving aside the excellent visual effects, the CGI and the incredible soundtrack that this film has, the story and the characters are enough to recommend you to watch it, and if you have already seen it, to watch it again.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 as far as the drama and fantasy genre is concerned.

Otro detalle a resaltar de esta obra maestra son la cantidad de referencias que tiene, siendo uno de estos por ejemplo la soga, la cual utilizan para cruzar el río al otro lado. Este lugar el cual llaman “Terabithia” está formado por criaturas que, si nos damos cuenta, tienen también un significado y una referencia a personajes secundarios de la misma película. La relación de Jack con su hijo Jess es otro detalle que podemos extraer, al demostrarnos lecciones muy valiosas y evidentes. Y aunque esta película tenga casi 20 años, no quiero dar ningún spoiler, por lo cual diré nomás que el desenlace final es uno de los puntos, o el único punto más fuerte que me impactó desde la primera vez que lo ví. Esto, amén de un final increíble y muchas lecciones por extraer, son lo que me convencieron de que esta cinta es sin duda una de las mejores obras audiovisuales que he visto en toda mi vida. Dejando de lado los excelentes efectos visuales, el CGI y la increíble banda sonora que tiene esta película, ya con la historia y los personajes que tiene basta y sobra como para recomendarte verla, y si la viste ya, volverla a ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de drama y fantasía.
