We are chemistry: Elemental (2023)
I would venture to say that the big kids of my generation will always love to watch animated movies; some for nostalgia, others to hear or see "a message" they needed, those who found it an acquired taste thanks to their own children, many because we simply have our inner little ones wide awake. So, for this field, Pixar is often a good option (if not the first one). This time I'm going to tell you about Elemental, by director Peter Sohn. And although for many people this film was a total fiasco, personally, I loved it (always taking the opposite); the only negative detail I can mention, would be the music, I felt it was very out of context with everything. Beyond that, it is incredible and with a message that is so necessary and should be imperative in our daily lives: acceptance.
Me atrevería a decir que los niños grandes de mi generación, siempre amaremos ver películas animadas; algunos por nostalgia, otros para escuchar o ver “un mensaje” que necesitaban, aquellos a los que les resultó un gusto adquirido gracias a sus propios niños, muchos porque simplemente tenemos a nuestros peques interiores bien despiertos. Así que, para este terreno, Pixar muchas veces es una buena opción (si no es que la primera). En esta oportunidad les hablaré de Elemental, del director Peter Sohn. Y aunque para muchas personas este film fue un total fiasco, en lo personal, me encantó (siempre llevando la contraria); el único detalle negativo que les puedo mencionar, sería la musicalización, sentí que estaba muy fuera de contexto con todo. Más allá de eso, es increíble y con mensaje tan necesario y debería ser imperativo en nuestros día a día: aceptación.
I loved that within the "fantasy", they mixed real issues such as migration and xenophobia in a somewhat "subtle" way (because of the comedy, but everything is very clear and direct). We focus on Element City, people of Water, Earth and Air coexist in this piece of the world where they respect each other and share in harmony with their own qualities. But what about the Fire people? Well, the story is somewhat different for them. They live almost marginalized from the rest in an area where only they can live.
Me encantó que dentro de la “fantasía”, mezclaran temas tan reales como la migración y xenofobia de una forma un tanto “sutil” (por la comedia, pero todo está muy claro y directo). Nos centramos en Ciudad Elementos, personas de Agua, Tierra y Aire conviven en este pedazo del mundo en el que se respetan y comparten en armonía con sus propias cualidades. ¿Pero y las personas de Fuego? Bueno, la historia es algo distinta para ellos. Viven casi marginados del resto en una zona donde solo pueden habitar ellos.
Like many, Berny and Cinder (fire people) decide to look for a better future in Ciudad Elementos, but without leaving aside their honor and tradition, they take with them the Blue Flame that represents and keeps alive their people, becoming the first fire people of this city. And despite the fact that they had just arrived, they received xenophobic treatment without the opportunity to prove that they were good people, that was permeating and making a dent in Berny's good heart. "Water is bad", father Berny always repeated to his daughter Ember, whom he educated with great care and pride to become the new manager of the family business, "La Fogata", a kind of convenience store for other fire people. Ember grew proud of who she was, but if there's one thing you can't hide, it's the pressure they put on you and the incessant search for approval, Ember's inner fire would explode when she lost her patience with a customer. And it is just her fire that causes an accident in the store, causing water pipes to start gushing everywhere, this is where Wade comes into her life. Straight from the pipes comes a water man, a city inspector by the way, who, seeing the mess, starts filling and filling tickets like crazy while crying about all the bad things that are happening to Ember... and those to come.
Como muchos, Berny y Cinder (personas de fuego) deciden buscar un mejor futuro en Ciudad Elementos, pero sin dejar de lado su honor y tradición, llevan consigo la Llama Azul que representa y mantiene vivo a su pueblo, convirtiéndose los primeros habitantes de Fuego de esta ciudad. Y a pesar de que recién llegaban, recibieron tratos xenófobos sin oportunidad de demostrar que eran buenas personas, eso fue calando y haciendo mella en el buen corazón de Berny. “El Agua es mala”, siempre repetía el padre Berny a su hija Ember, a quien educaba con gran esmero y orgullo para que se convirtiera en la nueva encargada del negocio familiar, “La Fogata”, una especie de tienda de conveniencia para otras personas de fuego. Ember fue creciendo orgullosa de quien era, pero si algo no se puede ocultar es la presión que ejercen sobre uno y la incesante búsqueda de aprobación, el fuego interno de Ember hacía estallar todo cuando perdía la paciencia con algún cliente. Y es justo su fuego lo que ocasiona un accidente en la tienda, haciendo que las tuberías de agua empiecen a brotar por todos lados, aquí es donde llega a su vida Wade. Directo de las cañerías llega un hombre de agua, de paso es inspector de la ciudad que, al ver el desastre, empieza a llenar y llenar multas como loco al mismo tiempo que llora por todas las cosas malas que le están pasando a Ember… y las que vendrán.
Faced with the catastrophe that is looming for Ember and her family, she tries everything she can to stop Wade from closing her father's business, she explains to him in a thousand ways, but he remains a sea of tears, he can't do anything, just try to get Ember to talk to her boss. Here begins the adventure of this unique pair and we can see the unique personalities they have. Ember begins to face her own fears as she goes to another part of town, where she fears that she will be judged or that she herself will cause harm. With Wade's charisma and empathy to spare, he looks for ways to keep Ember from feeling uncomfortable and to open up to him, but her father's words keep echoing in her mind. The development of both of them is spectacular, we gradually see why they are each other's reason for being, and at the same time we see all those wonderful things they are capable of doing, like the fact that Ember really is an artist for making glass works. Their relationship is somewhat unusual, and although it is not obvious to the naked eye, many around them begin to silently judge.
Frente a la catástrofe que se le avecina a Ember y a su familia, intenta por todos los medios que Wade no cierre el negocio de su padre, le explica de mil unas formas, pero logra que él siga siendo un mar de lágrimas, no puede hacer nada, solo tratar de que Ember pueda hablar con su jefa. Aquí empieza la aventura de este par tan sinigual y podemos ir viendo las personalidades tan únicas que tienen. Ember empieza a enfrentarse a sus propios miedos al ir a otra parte de la ciudad, en donde teme que la juzguen o que ella misma ocasione un daño. Con el carisma y la empatía que le sobra a Wade, busca la forma de que Ember no se sienta incómoda y que se abra con él, pero las palabras de su padre no dejan de retumbar en la mente de ella. El desarrollo de ambos es espectacular, vamos viendo poco a poco el porqué de la razón de ser de cada uno, y al mismo tiempo vemos todas esas cosas maravillosas que son capaces de hacer, como el hecho de que Ember realmente es una artista para hacer obras de vidrio. Su relación es algo inusual y, aunque no se nota a simple vista, muchos a su alrededor empiezan a juzgar en silencio.
Silent prejudice abounds. Despite everything, Wade makes the situation bearable for Ember and shows her that not everyone is as bad as she thinks, no matter if it makes her "boil" a little, they can have many things in common and...why not...have a real date. Within City of Elements, stereotypes are the bread and butter, seeing the relationship between two such opposite elements, shows that you can overcome barriers and "make chemistry". Many times we will encounter people along the way who resist change and do not want to leave their comfort zone, like Berny who, upon learning that her daughter was dating a waterman, disowned her without a moment's hesitation. Of course, in the end, everyone lives happily ever after.
El prejuicio silencioso abunda. A pesar de todo, Wade hace que la situación sea llevadera para Ember y le muestra que no todos son tan malos como ella cree, no importa si hace que “hierva” un poco, pueden tener muchas cosas en común y… ¿por qué no? Tener una cita real. Dentro de Ciudad Elementos, los estereotipos son el pan de cada día, el ver la relación entre dos elementos tan opuestos, muestra que se pueden superar las barreras y “hacer química”. Muchas veces vamos a encontrar personas en el camino que se resistan al cambio y no quieran salir de su zona de confort, como Berny que, al enterarse que su hija salía con un hombre de agua, la desheredó sin dudarlo ni un poco. Por su puesto, al final todos viven felices por siempre.
Without a doubt, the animation in Elemental is stunning, with a use of vibrant colors and textures that really set each element apart. The visual design of the characters and environments stands out for its creativity and attention to detail. Each element has its own distinctive visual style, which not only helps the narrative, but also offers a visually rich experience. The musicalization, I already mentioned, for my part has no plus points. The development of each character and the hidden jokes were a gem. I really don't understand what they saw in this story, I didn't see forced inclusion (as many painted it), through its animation and narrative, it deeply explores themes of identity, prejudice, diversity and coexistence; besides the powerful message about acceptance and mutual understanding, Elemental is not only to entertain us, but also offers a very serious reflection on psychological and sociological issues relevant in our society today. So, as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".
Sin duda alguna, la animación de Elementos es impresionante, con un uso de colores vibrantes y texturas que realmente diferencian a cada elemento. El diseño visual de los personajes y los entornos destaca por su creatividad y atención al detalle. Cada elemento tiene su propio estilo visual distintivo, lo que no solo ayuda a la narrativa, sino que también ofrece una experiencia visualmente rica. La musicalización, ya lo mencioné, por mi parte no tiene ningún punto a favor. El desarrollo de cada personaje y los chistes ocultos fueron una joya. Realmente no entiendo qué le vieron a esta historia, no vi inclusión forzada (como muchos la pintaron), a través de su animación y narrativa, explora profundamente temas de identidad, prejuicio, diversidad y convivencia; además del mensaje poderoso sobre la aceptación y el entendimiento mutuo, Elementos no solo es para entretenernos, sino que también ofrece una reflexión muy seria sobre temas psicológicos y sociológicos relevantes en nuestra sociedad actual. Así que, como siempre les digo: “Sino la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.

I love how you highlight the themes of acceptance and diversity that are woven into the story, it's great that they are addressed in such a creative way. Pixar's animation is always impressive..... I haven't seen it yet, will keep it in mind!
