"We all pee the same color": Hidden Figures (2016)
Imagine being able to do something that someone else can't, and not being taken into account if you do. Maybe some people won't know what that feels like, but now, if we were in the 60's, and they were colored, would the story be the same? Of course it wouldn't. And sadly, it's something that can still be seen today (even though it's no longer just a matter of color), even though it hasn't been "aired much" on the subject, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That's what this story based on true events, Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore Melfi, tells us the story of three geniuses whose particularity is that they were black. I love stories of struggles, and even more if Octavia Spencer (how I love this woman) and Taraji Penson are acting, although not only with them, this film has a cast of excellence.
Imagínate ser capaz de hacer algo que otro no puede, y que no te tomen en cuenta si lo llegas a hacer. Quizás algunos no sabrán lo que eso se siente, pero ahora, si estuviéramos en los años 60, y fueran de color, ¿la historia sería igual? Obvio que no. Y lastimosamente es algo que aún se puede ver en la actualidad (aunque ya no solo se limite a cuestión de colores) a pesar de que no se haya “ventilado mucho” sobre el tema, no significa que no existe. De eso se trata esta historia basada en hechos reales, Figuras Ocultas, dirigida por Theodore Melfi, nos cuenta la historia de tres genias cuya particularidad es que eran negras. Las historias de luchas me encantan, y más si están actuando Octavia Spencer (como amo a esta mujer) y Taraji Penson, aunque no se queden solo con ellas, este film tiene un elenco de excelencia.
Argument.
As I already mentioned, it's about three African-American women who work at NASA, their work was basic if we go to the case, but without it, certain things could not be done within NASA. Little by little each one of them becomes indispensable to the work of getting the first man into space.
Argumento.
Como ya se los mencioné, se trata de tres mujeres afroamericanas que trabajan en la NASA, su trabajo era básico si vamos al caso, pero que, sin él, no se podían hacer ciertas cosas dentro de la NASA. Poco a poco cada una de ellas se va haciendo indispensable para la labor de llevar al primer hombre al espacio.
Temporary.
The fact that they worked at NASA did not imply that they received any special treatment, not at all. Let's remember that we are in the 60's and racism is everywhere. In the section where this large group of women worked (besides, there was also another section for men), they were called "The Calculators", because that's what they did, calculate whatever it took; and that Katherine, Dorothy and Mary were the best of the group (although they were all tough, no denying it). From time to time they were given other temporary work in other sections, and if they failed they were not called back or they were fired, so they always had to do everything no less than perfect.
Temporales.
El hecho de que trabajaran en la NASA, no implicaba que recibieran algún trato especial, para nada. Recordemos que estamos en los 60 y el racismo se respira en todas partes. En la sección donde trabajaban este gran grupo de mujeres (a parte, también había otra sección para hombres), las llamabas “Las Calculadoras”, poque hacían eso, calcular lo que hiciera falta; y eso Katherine, Dorothy y Mary eran las mejores del grupo (aunque todas eran unas duras, no se niega). De vez en cuando les daban otro trabajo temporal en otras secciones, y si fallaban no las volvían a llamar o las despedían, así que siempre tenían que hacer todo no menos que perfecto.
One step is all it takes.
One day Katherine was assigned to work as a "computer" in the space work group, and although it was a position for men, she was the best analytical in geometry, her ability to calculate was impressive, it came as naturally as walking. On the other hand, her friend Mary, was assigned to work with the team of engineers who made the space capsule; they saw her potential and approached her with the idea of working permanently with them, she only needed an engineering degree (easy in those days).Both began to do literally the impossible to keep that job. Katherine solved problems with one hand and with the other deciphered codes that had been labeled as secret documents; while Mary fought against the judicial system to be allowed to study at the university (which by the way was only for men).
Solo basta un paso.
Un día Katherine es asignada a trabajar como “computadora” en el grupo de trabajo espacial, y aunque era un cargo para hombres, solo quedaba ella como la mejor analítica en geometría, su habilidad de cálculo era impresionante, le salía tan natural como caminar. Por otra parte, a su amiga Mary, le asignaron trabajar con el equipo de ingenieros que hacían la capsula espacial; vieron su potencial y le plantearon la idea de trabajar permanentemente con ellos, solo necesitaba el título de ingeniera (facilito en aquellos días). Ambas empezaron a hacer literalmente lo imposible para mantener ese puesto. Katherine resolvía problemas con una mano y con la otra descifraba códigos que le habían sido tachados de documentos secretos; mientras Mary luchaba contra el sistema judicial para que le permitieran estudiar en la universidad (que de paso era solo para hombres).
The human touch.
While this pair was burning the midnight oil, Dorothy was not far behind, she had her own aspirations, she wanted the position of permanent supervisor of the "calculator" section, she had already been working as a substitute for a long time and was not receiving any extra pay.
Like everything in life, things evolve. With the arrival of the new IBM computer, a beastly machine that would take the job away from the women calculators, only that this was delayed because no one knew how to configure or manipulate that machine. Dorothy took the opportunity to learn the manual from head to toe and teach all her team.
El toque humano.
Mientras este par se quemaba las pestañas, Dorothy no se quedaba atrás, tenía sus propias aspiraciones, quería el puesto de supervisora permanente de la sección de “las calculadoras”, ya tenía mucho tiempo trabajando como suplente y no recibía remuneración extra alguna.
Como todo en la vida, las cosas evolucionan. Con la llegada de la nueva computadora IBM, máquina bestial que les quitaría el trabajo a las mujeres calculadoras, solo que esto se retrasó porque nadie sabía configurar ni manipular aquel maquinón. Detalle que aprovechó Dorothy para aprenderse el manual de pies a cabeza y enseñar a todo su equipo.
Let's run!
If I don't talk about this, it would make no sense, it is iconic of the film. Poor Katherine, between calculations, had to endure the racist scorn of her colleagues, there was not even a "black bathroom" in that section, so every day she had to run several times to the black women's section just to use the bathroom, while still solving calculations! No matter how much the poor thing ran at 100k/h, the work was delayed because everything changed from one minute to the next and she wasn't right at those times to start over with a new calculation. And when she had to confront her boss about it, she saw what may have been her first act of empathy and solidarity in "a person white", the guy started batting the bathroom signs under the famous slogan: "at NASA, we all pee the same". This was a big step and a great teaching, so that they began to treat others better and especially Katherine, who no longer had to make coffee in a coffee pot that did not work properly or run out every now and then.
¡A correr!
Si no hablo de esto, no tendía sentido nada, es icónico del film. La pobre Katherine, entre calculo y calculo, debía soportar los desdenes racistas de sus compañeros, ni siquiera había un “baño para negras” en esa sección, por lo que todos los días debía correr varias veces a la sección de las mujeres negras solo para usar el baño, ¡mientras seguía resolviendo cálculos! Por más que la pobre corriera a 100k/h, el trabajo se retrasaba porque todo cambiaba de un minuto a otro y ella no estaba justo en esos momentos para volver a empezar con un nuevo cálculo. Y cuando tuvo que enfrentar a su jefe por eso, vio lo que quizás haya sido su primer acto de empatía y solidaridad en “un blanco”, el tipo empezó a batear los letreros de los baños bajo la famosa consigna: “en la NASA, todos orinamos igual”. Esto fue un gran paso y una gran enseñanza, para que empezaran a tratar mejor a los demás y sobre todo a Katherine, que ya no tenía que hacer café en una cafetera que ni funcionaba bien ni salir corriendo cada tanto.
In the end, everything turns out positively for our friends. Mary gets her degree as an engineer, Katherine takes the first man into space, Dorothy gets a better position as a supervisor in the programming department along with her team. And while history didn't really do them enough justice, director Melfi tries to capture some of the gratitude they lacked at the time. A film filled with a lot of emotion and vindication of African-American women worthy of admiration. So, as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss it".
Al final, todo resulta positivo para nuestras amigas. Mary logra titularse como ingeniera, Katherine lleva al primer hombre al espacio, Dorothy consigue un mejor cargo como supervisora en el departamento de programación junto a su equipo. Y aunque en realidad la historia no les hizo suficiente justicia, el director Melfi trata de plasmar un poco de esa gratitud que les hizo falta en su momento. Una película llena de mucha emoción y reivindicación a la mujer afroamericana digna de admirar. Así que, como le digo siempre: “Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada.”

This movie looks good, I've never heard of it before, so I'm going to put it on my list to watch. As you mention, in the 60s racism was still very strong, people of African descent suffered a lot from the discrimination they received and that these three women came to work at NASA is an achievement. Without a doubt it must have a great message.
