Total Emptiness: The Empty Man (2020)
When you're bored, you shouldn't get carried away by the first trailer you get along the way, the consequences are enormous. That happened to me when I stumbled upon one in particular that left me with high expectations. Director David Prior promises that The Empty Man will be a horror story loosely adapted from the comic book of the same name by Cullen Bunn and Vanessa R. Del Rey. Doing a little research, the graphic novel was very well received, as for the film... it left a lot to be desired. I don't know if they didn't know how to interpret the comic, I don't know if they wanted to cover more than they wanted to since I'm not a comic book fan, I couldn't tell you if it was faithful or not to the original story, but the difference in acceptance says a lot. Although you can also see great rivalry between sides, many say it is a masterpiece of horror, others think it was a waste of time that left us as its name: empty. But, well, to each his own.
Cuando uno está aburrido, no hay que dejarse llevar por el primer tráiler que se consiga por el camino, las consecuencias son enormes. Eso me pasó al toparme con uno en particular que me dejó con altas expectativas. El director David Prior promete que El Hombre Vacío será una historia de terror con adaptación libre del comic homónimo de Cullen Bunn y Vanesa R. Del Rey. Investigando un poco, la novela gráfica tuvo gran aceptación, en cuanto al film… dejó mucho que desear. No sé si fue que no se supo interpretar el comic, no sé si quería abarcar más de lo que quería ya que no soy fan de los comics, no podría decirles si fue fiel o no a la historia original, pero la diferencia de aceptación ya dice mucho. Aunque también se puede ver gran rivalidad entre bando y bando, muchos dicen que es una obra maestra del horror, otros pensamos que fue una perdida de tiempo que nos dejó como su nombre: vacíos. Pero, bueno, para gustos, colores.
Argument.
The beginning is a tremendous opener, it promises and engages. A group of boys are hiking in what looks like a Himalayan mountain, one of them falls into a cave and encounters what appears to be some sort of cursed sculpture that possesses him and causes him to end the lives of his friends.
Argumento.
El inicio es un tremendo abrebocas, promete y engancha. Un grupo de chicos están de excursión en lo que parece una montaña del Himalaya, uno de ellos cae en una cueva y se encuentra con lo que parece ser una especie de escultura maldita que lo posee y hace que acabe con la vida de sus amigos.
Losses.
Many years go by and somewhere in some town in the United States (things always happen there), a man depressed by the death of his wife and son, James, learns that his strange "niece" is missing. Nora, is desperate for her daughter, as she finds a strange message made in blood in her room: "the empty man made me do it". The police believe it is a murderous kidnapper, but James begins to make his own inquiries.
Pérdidas.
Pasan muchos años y en alguna parte de algún pueblo en Estados Unidos (siempre ocurren cosas allá), un hombre deprimido por la muerte de su esposa e hijo, James, se entera de que su extraña “sobrina” está desaparecida. Nora, está desesperada por su hija, ya que encuentra un extraño mensaje hecho con sangre en el cuarto de ella: “el hombre vacío me obligó a hacerlo”. La policía cree que se trata de un secuestrador asesino, pero James empieza a hacer sus propias averiguaciones.
From legend to reality.
Amanda, the missing girl, is a strange teenager, days before she had talked to her "uncle" about a new way of looking at life, she looked good, if a little weird from all the things she said. So James does the obvious thing, look around among his high school friends. And that's how he learns about an urban legend Amanda started rolling around: the empty man; if you blow a bottle three times halfway across a bridge and think about him, he'll find you in three days.
De la leyenda a la realidad.
Amanda, la chica perdida, es una extraña adolescente, días antes había hablado con su “tío” sobre una nueva forma de ver la vida, se veía bien, aunque un poco rara por todas las cosas que decía. Así que James hace lo obvio, buscar entre sus amigos de la preparatoria. Y es así como se entera de una leyenda urbana que Amanda empezó a rodar: el hombre vacío; si soplas una botella tres veces a mitad de un puente y piensas en él, te encontrará en tres días.
Nonsense.
Although James thinks it's unlikely that's what it's all about, he does "the ritual" so, in theory, he has three days to find her. The guys who did the ritual start disappearing, and they turn up dead and with the same message at Nora's house. James notices the strange thing about all this, Amanda's body was never found, so they can't be sure she's dead or if she's behind the murders. So as James continues to investigate, he finds a common detail between Amanda and the deceased: Pontifex Institute, which, obviously, he decides to find the place to investigate further. This is where things start to make sense. The building is a kind of training center in the best Scientology style, where most of the people were as young as Amanda.
Sin sentido.
Aunque James cree poco probable de que se trate de eso, él hace <em“el ritual”, así que, en teoría, tiene tres días para encontrarla. Empiezan a desaparecer los chicos que hicieron el ritual y estos, aparecen muertos y con el mismo mensaje en la casa de Nora. James nota lo extraño en todo esto, el cuerpo de Amanda nunca se encontró, así que no pueden asegurar que está muerta o si está detrás de los asesinatos. Así que mientras James sigue investigando, encuentra un detalle en común entre Amanda y los fallecidos: Pontifex Institute, al que, obvio, decide buscar el lugar a indagar más. Aquí es donde las cosas empiezan perder sentido. El edificio es una especie de centro de formación al mejor estilo de cienciología, donde las personas en su mayoría eran igual de jóvenes que Amanda.
Bewilderment.
Resolved that Pontifex Institute is an Empty Man worshipping cult, where they sacrifice people for the cause (which they never say which one). James goes after a clue in the middle of the forest, there is a camp for the most prominent followers, he was told that Amanda is supposed to be there. Among so many things he searched, he found many files and in one of those, there was his shadow, they have been investigating him too, they know everything about him. He keeps looking and finds the figure of the empty man drawn on one of the walls, he leaves the place and sees in the distance a group of people in a bonfire in the best style of The Wicker Man (also a film that I thought was terrible), but they realize his presence and go after him, but he manages to escape.
Desconcierto.
Resuelta que Pontifex Institute es una secta adoradora del Hombre Vacío, en el que sacrifican personas por la causa (que nunca dicen cuál). James se va tras una pista en medio del bosque, ahí hay un campamento para los más destacados seguidores, le dijeron que se supone que ahí se encuentra Amanda. Entre tantas cosas que buscó, encontró muchos archivos y en uno de esos, estaba su sombre, lo han estado investigando también, saben todo de él. Sigue buscando y encuentra la figura del hombre vacío dibujada en una de las paredes, sale del sitio y ve a lo lejos un grupo de personas en una fogata al mejor estilo del El Hombre de Mimbre (film también que me pareció malísimo), pero ellos se dan cuenta de su presencia y van tras él, aunque logra escaparse.
That's as far as it goes.
The story gets weirder and weirder. James learns that the cult has a group designated to go visit someone in the hospital. Remember the first group of guys who were on a field trip, which I mentioned? Well, the possessed one was hooked up to a lot of machines, he's been in a coma since they found him, and he's the messenger of the Hollow Man, he communicates through electromagnetic frequencies. Also with him was the blessed Amanda attending to him. He also learns that he has been created to be the new messenger of the Empty Man, his life began three days ago, none of his memories are real... in short there is a lot of information that instead of enlightening us, what it does is that we end up being disappointed for losing a little more than 130 minutes of our lives.
Ya no dio para más.
La historia se va tornando mas extraña y sin sentido. James se entera de que en la secta hay un grupo designado para ir a visitar a alguien en el hospital. ¿Se acuerdan del primer grupo de chicos que estaban de excursión, que les mencioné? Bueno, el poseído estaba conectado a muchas máquinas, ha estado en coma desde que lo encontraron, y él es el mensajero del Hombre Vacío, se comunica mediante frecuencias electromagnéticas. También estaba con él la bendita Amanda atendiéndolo. También se entera de que él ha sido creado para ser el nuevo mensajero del Hombre Vacío, su vida comenzó tres días atrás, ninguno de sus recuerdos son reales… en fin hay un montón de información que en vez de iluminarnos, lo que hace es que nos terminemos de decepcionar por perder poco más 130 minutos de nuestras vidas.
I insist, I don't know if this was the original plot, let's remember that Prior had free interpretation of the facts, but I feel he could have done better. He had a great story to develop (he could even afford to make several sequels), and he didn't know what to do with so much on his hands. The details lost all sense when a new one appeared, there was no real connection whatsoever, even if we try to see it as a surreal trip. As we would say in my country: "he went too much with too much, and ended up messing it up". We never knew what the Empty Man wanted, why have a messenger, what message he wanted to send... in short, we knew nothing. I love complicated plots with lots of unexpected twists and turns, but this... was one of the ones I regret spending my time on. So, if you've already seen it, don't do it again, and if you haven't seen it, don't, you're missing out on nothing good.
Insisto, no sé si así era la trama original, recordemos que el Prior tuvo libre interpretación de los hechos, pero siento que pudo hacerlo mejor. Tenía una gran historia por desarrollar (hasta podía darse el lujo de hacer varias secuelas), y no supo qué hacer con tanto entre manos. Los detalles perdían total sentido al aparecer uno nuevo, no había conexión real alguna, así lo busquemos ver como un viaje surrealista. Como diríamos en mi país: “fue mucho con demasiado, y la terminó embarrando”. Nunca supimos ¿qué era lo que quería el Hombre Vacío, porqué tener un mensajero, qué mensaje quería enviar…? en fin, no supimos nada. Me encantan las tramas complicadas y con muchos giros inesperados, pero esta… ha sido una de las que me arrepiento de dedicar mi tiempo. Así que, si ya la vieron, no la vuelvan a hacer, y si no la han visto, no lo hagan, de nada bueno se pierden.
