Reality sometimes trumps fiction: Glass (2019) [Trilogy]
Hello cinephiles, hope you're well. It's been a while since I've written, in fact, I still haven't, I'm leaning on a phone assistant since my back doesn't want me to be sitting. Which got me thinking, there are times when the body becomes one's prison and, coincidentally these days I was watching the culmination of a trilogy that I really loved. In it we were told a bit about the limitations that "impose on us", so to speak, or that we impose on ourselves; you could even say that it is a perfect mix between a psychological movie and a movie about superheroes (and you know that I don't really like superhero movies, but in this case it is impossible not to love this trilogy).
Hola, cinéfilos, espero que estén bien. Ya hacía tiempo que no escribía, de hecho, aún no lo hago, me estoy apoyando en un asistente del teléfono ya que mi espalda no quiere que esté sentada. Lo cual me hizo pensar, que hay veces en que el cuerpo se convierte la prisión de uno mismo y, casualmente en estos días estaba viendo la culminación de una trilogía que realmente me encantó. En ella se nos habló un poco sobre las limitaciones que “nos imponen”, por así decirlo, o que nosotros mismos nos imponemos; se podría decir incluso que es una mezcla perfecta entre una película psicológica y una película sobre superhéroes (y ustedes saben que no me gusta mucho las películas de superhéroes, pero en este caso es imposible no amar esta trilogía).
Something curious had also happened to me regarding this trilogy, since the first installment I swore and perjured that it had come out around 2010, and no, I had a little time lag since it was released in 2000 and it is "Unbreakable". This first installment was directed by M. Night Shyamalan (well, all of them actually), and to give you a quick recap, it follows the story of David Dunn (played by Bruce Willis), a man who miraculously survives a train accident without serious injury (the guy has never had a cold in his life!). In addition to meeting a mysterious man named Elijah Price (played by Samuel L. Jackson), who is the opposite of him, as he suffers from osteogenia imperfecta (glass bones); and suggests that David could be a superhero; the poor guy spent his entire childhood influenced by comic books. The film establishes from a somewhat realistic point of view between Elijah's obsession with superheroes and David's "abilities".
También me había sucedido algo curioso con respecto a esta trilogía, ya que la primera entrega yo juraba y perjuraba que había salido por ahí por los 2010, y no, tuve un pequeño desfase de tiempo ya que la estrenaron en el 2000 y se trata de “Unbreakable”. Esta primera entrega fue dirigida por M. Night Shyamalan (bueno, todas en realidad), y para resumirles un poco, sigue la historia de David Dunn (interpretado por Bruce Willis), un hombre que sobrevive milagrosamente a un accidente de tren sin sufrir lesiones graves (¡el tipo nunca en su vida ha tenido ni un resfriado!). Además de encontrarse con un misterioso hombre llamado Elijah Price (interpretado por Samuel L. Jackson), que es todo lo contrario a él, ya que sufre de osteogenia imperfecta (huesos de cristal); y sugiere que David podría ser un superhéroe; el pobre pasó toda su infancia influenciada por comics. La película establece desde un punto vista un tanto realista entre la obsesión de Elijah por los superhéroes y las “capacidades” de David.
Although for me, my favorite of this trilogy will always be "Split" (2016): here we meet Kevin Wendell Crumb (played by James McAvoy), who suffers from multiple personality disorder. He has 23 personalities with their different peculiarities, Kevin kidnaps three teenage women under the orders of two dominant personalities: "Dennis" and "Patricia", who make up "The Horde". The film takes us down a path of pure survival, unrelenting suspense while showing us certain aspects of Kevin and one of the kidnapped girls, Casey (Anya Taylor), who seem to have suffered from a shady and loveless past.
Aunque para mí, mi preferida de esta trilogía siempre será "Split" (2016): aquí conocemos a Kevin Wendell Crumb (interpretado por James McAvoy), quien sufre de trastorno de personalidad múltiple. Tiene 23 personalidades con sus distintas particularidades, Kevin secuestra a tres mujeres adolescentes bajo las órdenes de dos personalidades dominantes: "Dennis" y "Patricia", quienes conforman “La Horda”. La película nos lleva por un camino de sobrevivencia pura, un suspenso incesante a la vez que nos muestra ciertos aspectos de Kevin y de una de las chicas secuestradas, Casey (Anya Taylor) que, al parecer, padecieron de un pasado turbio y sin amor.
Although the narrative is one of tension and suspense, one can't help but feel empathy at many moments; as well as admiration for the impressive acting, physical and emotional preparation of McAvoy, who played not just one character, but Kevin's various personalities. Just a glance or the slightest gesture is enough to know who is in control at that moment. The only one who could know about the "presences" was his psychologist, who had a long trajectory and enough information about the disorder.
A pesar de que la narrativa sea de tensión y suspenso, no se puede evitar sentir empatía en muchos momentos; además de admiración por la impresionante actuación, preparación física y emocional de McAvoy, quien interpretó no solo a un personaje, sino a las diversas personalidades de Kevin. Basta solo una mirada o un mínimo gesto para saber quién está en control en ese momento. La única que podía saber de las “presencias”, era su psicóloga, tenía larga trayectoria y basta información sobre el trastorno.
The place of confinement, where Kevin and his "others" dwell, is full of dark facets that reflect the desperation of the prisoners. The camera angles work miracles with the imposing image of the "villain" and immerse us further into the story.
El lugar de encierro, donde Kevin y sus “otros” habitan, está lleno de facetas oscuras que reflejan la desesperación de las prisioneras. Los ángulos de cámara hacen milagros con la imponente imagen del “villano” y nos sumergen aún más en la historia.
Now, to make us bite our nails even more, it is revealed to us that "Unbreakable" and "Split" share the same universe. At the end of "Unbreakable", it is revealed that both characters, Kevin and David, exist in the same world, and obviously Elijah.
Ahora bien, para hacernos comer más las uñas, se nos revela que "Unbreakable" y "Split" comparten el mismo universo. Al final de "Unbreakable", se revela que ambos personajes, Kevin y David, existen en el mismo mundo, y obvio Elijah.
That's where the culmination of this orchestrated work comes in. "Glass" (2019) reunites David Dunn, Kevin Wendell Crumb and Elijah Price in a psychiatric hospital. Dr. Ellie Staple (played by Sarah Paulson) attempts to convince them that their supernatural abilities are not real. The narrative explores the idea of superheroes and supervillains in a more realistic context, having them each question, with their respective evidence, whether their powers are real or simply manifestations of mental illness and narrowly convinces them. Dr. Elli has a plan together with "her bosses" to dismantle this idea, although Elijah already had his own theory and his own plan.
Ahí es donde entra la culminación de esta obra orquestada. "Glass" (2019) reúne a David Dunn, Kevin Wendell Crumb y Elijah Price en un hospital psiquiátrico. La Dra. Ellie Staple (interpretada por Sarah Paulson) intenta convencerlos de que sus habilidades sobrenaturales no son reales. La narrativa explora la idea de los superhéroes y supervillanos en un contexto más realista, haciéndoles cuestionar a cada uno, con sus respectivas pruebas, si sus poderes son reales o simplemente manifestaciones de enfermedades mentales y por poco los convence. La Dra. Elli tiene armado, junto a “sus jefes” un plan para desmontarles esa idea, aunque Elijah ya tenía su propia teoría y su propio plan.
Although to be honest, I expected more from this third show, it fell a little short with the development, as if it was too rushed. You can notice it in several parts of the film where they try to forcibly link events from the past with the present; of course the ending was so terse, as well as the absurd attempt to bring out an affectionate relationship between Casey and Kevin.
Aunque para serles sincera, de esta tercera muestra esperaba más, se quedó algo corto con el desarrollo, como que lo hicieron muy apresurado. Se puede notar en varias partes del film en donde buscan forzadamente enlazar hechos de pasado con su presente; por supuesto el final, se vio tan escueto, al igual que el intento absurdo de sacar una relación afectiva entre Casey y Kevin.
So, to summarize: the 3 cinematics create the world of superheroes and supervillains with David, that world is developed by introducing Kevin and his multiple personifications and, finally, it culminates with the confrontation of the characters orchestrated by Elijah and the unveiling of a supreme organization of which we are never given major details. Although the effort to link two themes with such unique stories is recognized, this ending was not entirely negative. And if we analyze it a little, it would not be such an isolated event; we already have the most used example: a mother lifting a cart weighing hundreds of kilos to save her baby. That is why I commented that "the body is sometimes our prison", we close ourselves to possibilities because we do not know our potential. So, if you ask me, I say as I always do: "If you haven't seen them, see them, and if you have seen them, see them again, you won't miss a thing".
Entonces, para resumirles: las 3 cinemáticas crean el mundo de superhéroes y supervillanos con David, se desarrolla ese mundo al presentar a Kevin y sus múltiples personificaciones y, por último, culmina con el enfrentamiento de los personajes orquestado por Elijah y el develo de una organización suprema de la que nunca nos dan detalles mayores. Aunque se reconoce el esfuerzo por ligar dos temáticas con historias tan únicas, no fue del todo negativo este final. Y si nos ponemos a analizar un poco, no sería un hecho tan aislado; ya tenemos el ejemplo más usado: una madre levantando un carro de cientos de kilos para salvar a su bebé. Por eso comentaba que “el cuerpo a veces es nuestra prisión”, nos cerramos a posibilidades porque desconocemos nuestro potencial. Así que, si me lo preguntan, les digo como siempre: “Si no las han viso, véanlas, y si ya las vieron, vuélvanlas a ver, no tienen perdida de nada.”

Soy muy fan de esta trilogía de películas. Sin duda alguna es de esas "historias de superhéroes" que muy pocos recuerdan o ni siquiera conocen por lo infravaloradas que son. Y si bien es cierto que la última película le faltó mucho de lo que le sobró en las anteriores dos en cuanto a desarrollo de personajes se refiere (más que todo al desarrollo de las relaciones entre los personajes principales y cómo terminan enfrentándose al final), esto no quita que siga siendo una de esas obras independientes mejor hechas del último siglo.

Me encanta tu reflexión sobre cómo a veces el cuerpo se convierte en nuestra propia prisión, y cómo estos personajes desafían esas limitaciones. Es una analogía poderosa que nos hace pensar en nuestro propio potencial oculto. Estas películas me gustan mucho, las actuaciones son sobresalientes! 👍
