The Crow: 29th anniversary [ES - EN]

El 13 de mayo de 1994 se estrenó el film que por la época en dónde mi adolescencia estaba marcada por mis gustos musicales y la nostalgia que creo quién la protagonizó, de manera inmediata se convirtió en una de mis películas favoritas, una producción icónica que lamentablemente siempre estará marcada por la tragedia; ese film al que hago referencia es "The Crow", una película basada en un comic del mismo nombre y que fue publicado en 1989 y que relata la historia de "Eric Draven" un músico que en una noche violenta, tanto él como su novia son vilmente asesinados y que un año después del lamentablemente hecho, Eric regresa entre los muertos para ser guiado por un cuervo y así vengarse de quienes le arrebataron su vida.

On May 13, 1994 was released the film that at the time when my adolescence was marked by my musical tastes and the nostalgia created by who starred in it, immediately became one of my favorite movies, an iconic production that unfortunately will always be marked by tragedy; that film to which I refer is "The Crow", a film based on a comic book of the same name and which was published in 1989 and tells the story of "Eric Draven" a musician who in a violent night, both he and his girlfriend are vilely murdered and that a year after the sad fact, Eric returns among the dead to be guided by a crow and thus take revenge on those who took his life.

Este es la tercera (y seguramente no la última) publicación que realizó sobre este film y en dónde los dos anteriores hago referencia al impacto que tuvo el soundtrack sobre mi persona, pero en esta oportunidad, quiero hacer un breve homenaje a esta película con respecto a cómo el director, Alex Proyas y los guionistas, David J. Schow y John Shirley, se tomaron ciertas libertades con respecto a la historia originalmente creada por James O'Barr y crear una producción, gotica, de acción, rock y la muerte como un tema principal; justamente esa última característica la descubrí mientras iban pasando los años y seguía viendo este film el cual cada vez que iba descubriendo cosas sobre su realización, lo sentí como una invitación para recordar una buena época y a ver lo que fue la última actualización de Brandon Lee.

This is the third (and surely not the last) publication he made about this film and where the previous two I refer to the impact the soundtrack had on me, but this time, I want to make a brief tribute to this film with respect to how the director, Alex Proyas and screenwriters, David J. Schow and John Shirley, took certain liberties with respect to the story originally created by James O'Barr and created a production, gothic, action, rock and death as a main theme; precisely that last feature I discovered as the years went by and I kept watching this film which every time I was discovering things about its making, I felt it as an invitation to remember a good time and to see what was the last update of Brandon Lee.

En los 90' todo el tema sobre héroes estaba completamente opacado por el éxito de los dos primeros films de "Batman" dirigidos por Tim Burton; esos dos films en dónde la oscuridad funcionó para el relato del enfrentamiento entre un vigilante y un grupo de criminales los cuales tienen como similitud la deficiencia en estabilidad mental; una historia fascinante que sorpresivamente otras productoras no quisieron copiar para competir con WB, explotando la idea de hacer más producciones basadas en comics como si sucede en los tiempos actuales y es que otras grandes productoras no quisieron arriesgar e imagino que la decisión fue esperar, pero eso no evitó que productoras pequeñas dieran un paso adelante para el desarrollo de films basados en comics como por ejemplo "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1990), "TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze" (1991), "The Shadow" (1994) y "The Mask" (1994); hago énfasis en el año de estreno porque algunas de estas películas se estrenaron antes de "The Crow" y otras en el mismo año y es sí deciden saber más sobre que otras películas basadas en comics que se estrenaron en esa década, podrán observar cuántas alcanzaron ser un éxito en taquilla y cuántas otras fallaron.

"The Crow" a pesar de ser un film pequeño, tenía un gran potencial para ser un éxito en la taquilla, lo místico de la historia la cual se puede simplificar en que es el relato una venganza, que lleva a cabo un hombre que regresa del mundo de los muertos, es algo llamativo, así como todo el asunto de lo gótico, de la vestimenta, el maquillaje y la música, pero aparte de eso, creo que todo el asunto de ser una historia oscura hizo atraer el interés al público que seguramente la relaciono con las dos primeras películas de Batman, pero hubo otra cosa que dio una inesperada publicidad al film y esa fue la lamentable muerte de Brandon Lee a causa de un desperfecto en una de las armas que estaba cargada con municiones reales; una tragedia que personalmente me enteré un tiempo después de ver ese film por primera vez y que en años siguientes al ver a este actor decir sus diálogos interpretando a Eric Draven, pensaba en lo inesperado y cruel de su muerte.

In the 90's the whole hero theme was completely overshadowed by the success of the first two "Batman" films directed by Tim Burton; those two films where the darkness worked for the story of the confrontation between a vigilante and a group of criminals whose similarity is the deficiency in mental stability; a fascinating story that surprisingly other production companies did not want to copy to compete with WB, exploiting the idea of making more productions based on comics as it happens in current times and is that other large production companies did not want to risk and I imagine that the decision was to wait, but that did not prevent small production companies to take a step forward for the development of films based on comics such as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1990), "TMNT 2: The Secret of the Ooze" (1991), "The Shadow" (1994) and "The Mask" (1994); I emphasize the year of release because some of these films were released before "The Crow" and others in the same year and it is if you decide to know more about what other comic book based films that were released in that decade, you will be able to observe how many achieved box office success and how many others failed.

"The Crow" despite being a small film, had great potential to be a success at the box office, the mysticism of the story which can be simplified in that it is the story a revenge, which carries out a man who returns from the world of the dead, is something striking, as well as the whole thing of the gothic, costumes, makeup and music, but apart from that, I think the whole thing of being a dark story attracted the interest of the audience that surely related it to the first two Batman movies, but there was another thing that gave an unexpected publicity to the film and that was the unfortunate death of Brandon Lee because of a malfunction in one of the guns that was loaded with live ammunition; a tragedy that I personally found out some time after seeing that film for the first time and that in the following years when I saw this actor speaking his dialogues playing Eric Draven, I thought about how unexpected and cruel his death was.

En los 90' se vivió un boom espectacular con respecto al rock; aunque en el año que se estrenó The Crow, se estaba experimentando el posible fin del "Grunge" como movimiento musical y la aparición o la nuevamente entrada en escena de otros estilos de rock, no había duda que las personas envueltas en promocionar este film por vía de la música hicieron un gran trabajo; eso en parte es una de las características que me atrajo a mí y a otros amigos de ver este film aunque para mí existía otro factor y ese era ver el nuevo film de Brandon Lee, hijo de la leyenda Bruce Lee, entre la música y la nostalgia de ver al hijo de uno de los actores de acción más importante en el cine (está es mi opinión) era algo fascinante y estaba convencido de que está película significaría el estrellato para él, pero como hice referencia en el párrafo anterior, su repentina muerte puso fin a todo y así como su padre, se comenzó una gran lista de rumores que opacaron su desempeño como actor; recuerdo que tiempo después me enteré de tan lamentable noticia y eso hizo que apreciará mucho más a este film y eso es por su historia, no tanto por el asunto de la venganza y las escenas de acción, sino por cómo a alguien que pierde la vida de manera repentina, puede tener otra oportunidad para cerrar o terminar temas inconclusos para poder descansar en paz y es por eso que con lo sucedido a ese actor es inevitable no pensar en todo lo que le faltó por alcanzar, ya que nunca pudo aprovechar el éxito de ese film.

In the 90's there was a spectacular boom in rock music; although in the year The Crow was released, we were experiencing the possible end of "Grunge" as a musical movement and the appearance or re-entry of other rock styles, there was no doubt that the people involved in promoting this film through music did a great job; that in part is one of the characteristics that attracted me and other friends to see this film although for me there was another factor and that was to see the new film by Brandon Lee, son of the legend Bruce Lee, between the music and the nostalgia of seeing the son of one of the most important action actors in cinema (this is my opinion) it was something fascinating and I was convinced that this film would mean stardom for him, but as I mentioned in the previous paragraph, his sudden death put an end to everything and just like his father, a long list of rumors began that overshadowed his performance as an actor; I remember that some time later I found out about such unfortunate news and that made me appreciate this film much more and that is because of its story, not so much because of the revenge and the action scenes, but because of how someone who loses his life suddenly, can have another opportunity to close or finish unfinished issues in order to rest in peace and that is why with what happened to this actor is inevitable not to think about all that he failed to achieve, since he could never take advantage of the success of that film.

Quiero antes de finalizar, retomar nuevamente el tema sobre la influencia del material original, el comic sobre este film y sí por casualidad quieren leer el comic y después ver la película notarán que, _Proyas junto a Schow y Shirley las decisiones de obviar diferentes cosas se sintieron correctas porque no sería tan apegada a la idea del film y siempre he dicho que para ese momento funcionó lo hecho para la pantalla grande y es que si se llegara a hacer una producción 100% fidedigna al material original, creo que sería muy ambicioso y posiblemente no tuviera el recibimiento que al final obtuvo y que la convirtió en una película de culto; lo otro es pensar que en la actualidad posiblemente al obviar muchas cosas se crearía ciertas quejas por parte de los fieles fans al comic, pero eso nunca fue un problema a mediados de los 90', creo que muchas personas en esa época fueron empujadas a las salas de cine para ver la actuación de Brandon, para ver qué tan único fue su trabajo como un hombre resucitado que sabe que cuando termine todo, volverá nuevamente al mundo de los muertos y eso le llena de frustración y rabia, pero eso no evita a ayudar a quien de alguna manera u otra mantiene vivo su amor y dolor, eso siempre me pareció especial de ese personaje. The Crow es un magnífico film, posiblemente es el primero que veo el cual es basado en un comic y no es protagonizado por un héroe famoso y es que Eric Draven no es el típico héroe y esta tampoco es una típica historia que para convertirla en una película, se usó muchos clichés de películas sobre venganzas, pero todo realizado en una manera excepcional y por eso, en su 29 aniversario recomiendo no solo ver este film sino el comic el cual nuevamente tendrá una versión de acción-real la cual espero ver el año próximo.

Before I finish, I'm going to pick up on the influence of the source material, the comic book on this film and if you happen to want to read the comic book and then watch the film you will notice that, I have always said that for that moment it worked what was made for the big screen and that if a production 100% faithful to the original material were to be made, I think it would be very ambitious and possibly it would not have the reception that in the end it got and that made it a cult film; the other thing is to think that nowadays, possibly by leaving out many things it would create some complaints from the faithful fans of the comic, but that was never a problem in the mid 90's, I think many people at that time were pushed to the theaters to see the performance of Brandon, to see how unique his work was as a resurrected man who knows that when it's all over, he'll go back to the world of the dead again and that fills him with frustration and anger, but that doesn't stop him from helping the one who somehow or other keeps his love and pain alive, that always seemed special to me about that character. The Crow is a magnificent film, possibly the first I've seen which is based on a comic book and is not starring a famous hero and Eric Draven is not the typical hero and this is not a typical story to turn it into a movie, it used many clichés of movies about revenge, but all done in an exceptional way and therefore, on its 29th anniversary I recommend not only see this film but the comic which again will have an action-real version which I hope to see next year.
