Land of Bad - Movie Review [EN - ES]

War movies and horror movies, are the ones that can fit very well in other genres; I believe that both types have the same rules as for example in which a group of characters who have a lot to lose, for some reason get together and are part of an event of which they must in one way or another survive facing a formidable enemy and despite the possible final satisfaction, the trauma generated will remain for life; I believe that these characteristics exposed in a very simple way on my part, is what we mostly find in these styles of films and what personally attracts me when they are done well because they provide quality productions.

Filmes bélicos junto a los de terror, son los que pueden encajar muy bien en otros géneros; creo que ambos tipos tiene las mismas reglas como por ejemplo en que un grupo de personajes los cuales tienen mucho que perder, por cierta razón se reúnen y son parte de un evento del cual deberán de una manera u otra sobrevivir enfrentando a un enemigo formidable y a pesar de la posible satisfacción final, el trauma generado se mantendrá de por vida; creo que esas características expuestas de una manera muy simple por mi parte, es lo que mayormente encontramos en estos estilos de películas y lo que personalmente me atrae cuando se hace bien porque proveen producciones de calidad.

"Land of Bad" is a war film, which had a theatrical release last February with a poor box office performance despite its cost of less than 20 million dollars; it tells the story of a small group of Delta Force of the United States Navy, which was assigned the mission to rescue a C.I.A. agent who is trapped in a base in the southern Philippines; this group of military detainees will be accompanied by an inexperienced and young officer of the Tactical Air Control Party, Sergeant "JJ 'Playboy' Kinney" Kinney, This group of first-time military personnel will be accompanied by the inexperienced and young officer of the Tactical Air Control Party, Sergeant "JJ 'Playboy' Kinney" who will serve as a liaison with the Drone team; This mission, which is planned to be quick and with few casualties, is complicated by the appearance of an extremist group with whom a large-scale confrontation is generated, which causes Sergeant Kinney to show what he has learned in his training and with the help of the team of drone pilots, he must do the impossible to survive.

"Land of Bad" es un film de guerra, el cual tuvo un estreno en las salas de cine en febrero pasado con una pobre recaudación en taquilla a pesar de que su costo fue menos a 20 millones de dólares; relata la historia de un pequeño grupo de Delta Force de la Armada de los Estados Unidos, los cuales se le asignó la misión de rescatar a un agente de la C.I.A., el cual está atrapado en una base en el sur de Filipinas; este grupo de militares estrenados serán acompañados por el inexperto y joven oficial del Tactical Air Control Party, el sargento "JJ 'Playboy' Kinney" quien servirá de enlace con el equipo de Drones; está misión la cual está planeada para ser rápida y con pocas bajas, se complica por la aparición de un grupo extremista con quién se genera un enfrentamiento en gran escala lo que ocasiona que el Sargento Kinney deberá mostrar lo aprendido en su entrenamiento y con la ayuda del equipo de pilotos de drones deberá hacer lo imposible para sobrevivir.

As I said before, war films have great equality with the horror genre and in this film, precisely its director, William Eubank, has a past linked to the horror genre with films like "Underwater" (2020) and "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin" (2021); in this opportunity his work stands out from the end of the first introductory act, until the final moment of the film; enjoy each of the action scenes, which are well coordinated and very well filmed; the use of slow motion is a feature or element very well used as well as the short budget which makes me think that the several scenes of explosions plus CGI, the expense was very well used in each of those scenes.

The script written by Eubank along with David Frigerio, is extremely simple and that's a good thing; first this story can be defined in when something must go wrong, then it will go wrong and all that military business concerning the "Semper Fi", be it with fellow soldiers in combat or accomplishing the mission; both characteristics are the basis of the film, which has two shared visions in the same fact, that was something that I liked, but that does not stop being propagandistic, but still and despite that, both screenwriters do a good job telling an unoriginal story, full of clichés, but it works.

Como dije anteriormente, filmes bélicos tiene gran igualdad con el género del terror y en este film, justamente su director, William Eubank, tiene un pasado ligado al género del terror con filmes como "Underwater" (2020) y "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin" (2021); en esta oportunidad su trabajo resalta desde el final del primer introductorio acto, hasta el momento final del film; disfrute de cada una de las escenas de acción, las cuales son bien coordinadas y muy bien filmadas; el uso del slow motion es una característica o elemento muy bien usado así como el corto presupuesto lo cual me hace pensar que las varias escenas de explosiones más el CGI, el gasto fue muy bien usado en cada una de esas escenas.

El guion escrito por Eubank junto a David Frigerio, es sumamente simple y eso es bueno; primero está historia se puede definir en cuando algo debe salir mal, entonces saldrá mal y todo ese asunto militar referente al "Semper Fi", sea con los compañeros en combate o de cumplir con la misión; ambas características son la base del film, la cual tiene dos visiones compartidas en un mismo hecho, eso fue algo que me gustó, pero que no deja de ser propagandístico, pero de igual manera y a pesar de eso, ambos guionistas hacen un buen trabajo relatando una historia nada original, llena de clichés, pero que funciona.

Russell Crowe's performance leads the film, without him possibly none of the actors would work, especially Liam Hemsworth, who is not the most charismatic of his brothers, but who fulfills his role as protagonist and that is due to the interaction with the character played by Crowe, I mean "Captain Eddie Grimm", who as I said takes the lead of the story and makes it his own, especially in the third act. The other actors fulfill certain and expected roles or example the leader of the mission, falls on "John "Sugar" Sweet", played by Milo Ventimiglia, the over protector "Sergeant Abell", played by Luke Hemsworth, the comic "Sergeant Bishop", played by Ricky Whittle, all of them fulfill very well in their performances, in my opinion, the cast of the film is good.

La actuación de Russell Crowe lidera el film, sin él posiblemente no funciona ninguno de los actores, en especial Liam Hemsworth, el cual no es el más carismático de sus hermanos, pero que cumple en su rol de protagonista y eso es debido a la interacción con el personaje interpretado por Crowe, me refiero a "Captain Eddie Grimm", quien como dije toma el liderazgo de la historia y la convierte suya, en especial en el tercer acto. Los demás actores cumple con ciertos y esperados roles or ejemplo el líder de la misión, recae en "John "Sugar" Sweet", interpretado por Milo Ventimiglia, el sobre protector "Sargento Abell", interpretado por Luke Hemsworth, el cómico "Sargento Bishop", interpretado por Ricky Whittle, todos ellos cumplen muy bien en sus actuaciones, en mi opinión, el cast del film es bueno.

I was hesitant to see Land of Bad and is that on other occasions I paid attention to positive opinions on social networks of several films, but in the end I have been disappointed, but without having high expectations, I can say that this film meets to be highly entertaining, it is a good and very well told story, especially in its final act, but what surprised me the most are the action scenes, all are very well filmed, with good choreography, excellent handling of tension and along with all that, there was something that I think I will like the most and that was that I kept thinking that my father would like to see this movie; for all of the above, I recommend this simple and effective action film.

Estaba dubitativo en ver Land of Bad y es que en otras ocasiones presté atención a opiniones positivas en redes sociales de varios films, pero al final me han decepcionado, pero sin tener altas expectativas, puedo decir que este film cumple el ser sumamente entretenido, es una buena y muy bien relatada historia, en especial en su acto final, pero lo que más me ha sorprendido son las escenas de acción, todas son muy bien filmadas, con buenas coreografías, excelente el manejo de la tensión y junto a todo eso, hubo algo que considero en qué me gustará más y fue que no dejaba de pensar que a mi padre le agradaría mucho ver esta película; por todo lo antes descrito, recomiendo este simple y efectivo film de acción.
