Highlander: "There can be only one" [EN/ES]

Last night without having any interest in watching any new film production or series of any streaming service, I let nostalgia invade me and decided to re-watch one of my favorite movies, a film that combines fantasy and action and tells the story of a group of immortal warriors who must face each other to opt for the grand prize, I refer to the film released in 1986 and was called "Highlander ".

En la noche de ayer sin tener algún interés de ver alguna nueva película o serie de algún servicio de streaming, deje que la nostalgia me invadiera y decidí volver a ver una de mis películas favoritas, un film que une la fantasía y la acción y que relata la historia de un grupo de guerreros inmortales que deberán enfrentarse entre sí para optar el gran premio, me refiero al film estrenado en 1986 y que recibió el nombre de "Highlander".

This is one of those movies that at the time of its release did not have a great support at the box office, but some time later it became a cult film which entails having a large fan base; personally the whole story concerning the immortals, their battles, the rules that rightly surround their confrontations was what attracted me to this story which had long time that I had not seen again and this time, I felt like I was watching it for the first time which made me enjoy many of the things that provides the film.

The work in the direction by Russell Mulcahy is interesting, the movement of the camera to follow the characters in certain scenes is good, as well as the transition from one era to another, just that seemed to me the best of the film because it gives dynamism to the story; my only complaint is the few flaws in the editing and the little dramatic or intense of some battles, otherwise I will say that the atmosphere with some terror and suspense is a success for the fights, especially the final battle.

The script written by Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood and Larry Ferguson, is very simple, the story of the existence of immortals who for some reason are in a conflict which generates a series of duels where there are certain rules being the most important in that in the end there must be only one to collect the grand prize; I think that's the simplest way to explain this movie where the difference is in the reasons that each immortal will use to be part of the final battle, actually it all depends on the story or the point of view of the protagonists and of course this story is told by the character of "Connor MacLeod".

Este es una de esas películas que en el momento de su estreno no tuvo un gran apoyo en la taquilla, pero tiempo después se convirtió en un film de culto lo cual conlleva tener una gran base de fans; personalmente toda la historia referente a los inmortales, sus batallas, las reglas que justamente rodean sus enfrentamientos fue lo que me atrajo a esta historia la cual tenía mucho tiempo que no había vuelto a ver y en esta oportunidad, sentí como si estuviera viéndola por primera vez lo cual me hizo disfrutar muchas de las cosas que provee el film.

El trabajo en la dirección por parte de Russell Mulcahy es interesante, el movimiento de la cámara al dar seguimiento a los personajes en ciertas escenas es bueno, así como la transición de una época a otra, justamente eso me pareció de lo mejor del film porque da dinamismo al relato; mi única queja es a los pocos fallos en la edición y en lo poco dramático o intenso de algunas batallas, de lo demás diré que el ambiente con algo de terror y suspenso es un acierto para las peleas, en especial a la batalla final.

El guion escrito por Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood y Larry Ferguson, es muy simple, el relato de la existencia de inmortales que por cierta razón están en un conflicto el cual genera una serie de duelos en donde existen ciertas reglas siendo la más importante en que al final solo debe haber uno para cobrar el gran premio; creo que esa es la manera más sencilla de explicar esta película en dónde la diferencia esta en los motivos que cada inmortal usará para ser parte de la batalla final, en realidad todo depende del relato o el punto de vista de los protagonistas y por supuesto que está historia está relatada por el personaje de "Connor MacLeod".

Precisely, the performance of Christopher Lambert as "Connor" is one of the characteristics for which I really enjoy this film, the appearance of this character and his story is something that immediately made me appreciate this character, since Connor does not have the appearance or physique of someone who is powerful, but in the same way to live for more than 400 years makes you think that he is a formidable rival and that is his lack of humility, this is not because it is something negative about the character, but without having the appearance of someone powerful, he knows he is without the need to show it to everyone; The opposite happens with Clancy Brown and his interpretation of "The Kurgan", one of my favorite villains in the movies; his threatening aspect, his need to terrorize, to demonstrate power, his cruelty is one of the best of the film and that being next to Connor, makes the aspects, their differences stand out even more.

Justamente, la actuación de Christopher Lambert como "Connor" es una de las características por la cual disfruto mucho este film, el aspecto de este personaje y su historia es algo que de manera inmediata me hizo apreciar a ese personaje, ya que Connor no tiene el aspecto o físico de alguien que es poderoso, pero de igual manera al vivir por más de 400 años te hace pensar que es un rival formidable y en eso está su poca humildad, esto no lo digo porque sea algo negativo del personaje, sino que sin tener el aspecto de alguien poderoso, él sabe que lo es sin la necesidad de mostrarlo a todos; todo lo contrario sucede con Clancy Brown y su interpretación de "The Kurgan", uno de mis villanos favoritos en el cine; su aspecto amenazante, su necesidad de aterrorizar, de demostrar poder, su crueldad es de lo mejor del film y que al estar junto a Connor, hace que los aspectos, sus diferencias resalten aún más.

Years later, sequels, TV series and even animated series were released which made the Highlander franchise grow, although to be honest, only the 90's series attracted my interest and that's due to the low quality of each of its productions, but that doesn't prevent this story of immortals not to continue creating influence or to continue being attractive because soon, a new film, a remake will be released and where it has Henry Cavill as the main character and Chad Stahelski in the direction, which is impossible not to have expectations and I just hope it is as good as this classic film of the 80'.

Años después se estrenaron secuelas, series de TV y hasta series animadas lo cual hizo crecer la franquicia de Highlander, aunque para ser sincero, solo la serie de los 90' atrajo mi interés y eso es debido a la poca calidad de cada una de sus producciones, pero eso no evita que esta historia de inmortales no siga creando influencia o que siga siendo atractiva porque dentro de poco, un nuevo film, un remake será estrenado y en donde se cuenta con Henry Cavill como protagonista y Chad Stahelski en la dirección, lo cual es imposible no tener expectativas y solo espero que sea igual de buena que este clásico del cine de los 80'.
