There are many people who consider that animated films are always aimed at a child audience and certain film studios have directed it in that direction, perhaps currently by the theme of no longer talking about certain topics has influenced a lot, but today, I saw an animated film of 1999 that I can assure you, has a story that is not for children although it was released for that audience, the difference is that for those years were given many freedoms on the stories, therefore, today I want to talk about "The Iron Giant".

The movie "The Iron Giant" was directed by Brad Bird and was released in 1999, the story is based on a novel by a British writer named Ted Hughes. The film, like most of them, has a central storyline, but, although it is somewhat unnoticed, there are different fragments of stories, both of characters and situations, which include real issues such as wars, the holocaust, government representations, weapons... All this in an animated film that clearly makes sense to be set in 1957 when the cold war was going on.

The film begins by showing us the space and a kind of meteorite falling to earth, showing that what landed in the sea was a giant. Then we meet our protagonist, Hogarth Hughes, a little boy who lives with his mother, she has to stay a little later at work so Hogarth is left alone, while watching a movie on his TV, the signal has interference so he goes out to investigate and realizes that his antenna has been damaged, he sees a series of traces which he follows and will lead him to the responsible, a rather large robot which seems to ignore him and is interested in feeding on a power plant, but ends up hurting himself and getting trapped, so little Hogarth helps him and the robot sees this as an act of friendship, is interested in our protagonist and learns from him, Hogarth discovers that the giant is not bad, he behaves like a child who is learning again and this is due to a blow to his head when he fell to the ground.

As the plot progresses, there is a government organization aimed at discovering strange events that may threaten the security of the country, more now after the launch of Sputnik, so an agent investigates and approaches to discover the iron giant, which without knowing, already considers that it is a kind of foreign technology designed to wreak more havoc in the country, This leads to a kind of quite raw events in terms of stories of humanity, making certain debates in the development of the entire film, one of the most important and although not explicitly stated, raises a question, what would happen if any weapon had consciousness or a soul, would it be used in the same way in which humanity already takes advantage of them or would prefer not to follow that path?

I feel that the messages that the film leaves goes beyond something for children, because yes, it has great meanings such as the choice of who you decide to be, that no one can decide for you, that only matters what you believe about you and others such as the importance of family, friends who are for you, but also others that perhaps more adults are more understandable, such as the reason for wars, how weapons are used only to bring destruction, internal struggles between good and bad and so many more things that while watching the movie I kept thinking that "this is not something a child would understand" and I think that just this is factor of what I will say next, a curious fact is that the movie was considered a failure, because it couldn't even raise the budget of the movie when it was released, but many years later, the film is one of the most fondly remembered, even having it as one of the best visually speaking, with the message it conveys, the complexity of the plot, I could say without fear that it is one of the most complete and beautiful films that exist.

The film has something for everyone, it has funny moments, moments of overcoming, uncertainty, fear, joy, not so happy feelings... It really is a set of pieces that fit together perfectly as the story progresses. The way of connecting with the robot and the child, is undoubtedly the magic of the film, here you have me, a 26 year old excited by scenes that, although I did not remember, now have a place stored in my heart and this is what movies should aspire to, to transcend over time.

I fully recommend the film and I hope that the brevity of the plot that I told you is a hint to arouse curiosity to see it, in my reviews I don't like to tell the whole development and end of the film, because I feel that it loses a little the joke that it calls your attention but if you already know what will happen is a kind of spoiler and I don't like to do that, so, I leave the ending to uncertainty but saying that the movie is really worth seeing once in a lifetime, either for the plot, for its beautiful visual work and for the feeling it ends up leaving when it ends, give it a chance, an opportunity that it didn't have when it was released and I'm sad that it was like that but that it is currently considered a gem of cinema is a small compensation.

Hay muchas personas que consideran que las animaciones en películas siempre están dirigidas para un público más infantil y ciertos estudios cinematográficos lo han encaminado hacia esa dirección, quizás actualmente por el tema de ya no hablar sobre ciertos tópicos ha influido mucho, pero el día de hoy, vi una película animada del año 1999 que les puedo asegurar, tiene una historia que no es para niños aunque fue lanzada para ese público, la diferencia es que para esos años se daban muchas libertades sobre las historias, por lo tanto, hoy quiero hablarles de “El gigante de hierro”

La película “El gigante de hierro” fue dirigida por Brad Bird y fue estrenada en el año de 1999, la historia de la misma está basada en una novela de un escritor británico llamado Ted Hughes. La película al igual que la gran mayoría tiene un hilo argumental que es la historia central, pero, aunque pase de cierta forma como desapercibidas, existen diferentes fragmentos de historias, tanto de personajes como de situaciones, que incluyen temas reales como guerras, el holocausto, representaciones gubernamentales, armas… Todo esto en una película animada que claramente tiene sentido al estar ambientada en 1957 cuando transcurría la guerra fría.

La película empieza mostrándonos el espacio y una especie de meteorito cayendo a la tierra, mostrando así que lo que aterrizó en el mar era un gigante. Acto seguido conocemos a nuestro protagonista, Hogarth Hughes, un pequeño que vive con su madre, esta tiene que quedarse un poco más tarde en el trabajo por lo que el pequeño Hogarth se queda solo, mientras veía una película en su televisor, la señal tiene interferencias por lo cual sale a investigar y se da cuenta que su antena ha sido dañada, visualiza una serie de rastros los cuales sigue y lo llevarán al responsable, un robot bastante grande el cuál parece ignorarle y le interesa alimentarse de una planta eléctrica, pero termina lastimándose y quedando atrapado, por lo que el pequeño Hogarth lo ayuda y el robot ve esto como un acto de amistad, se interesa por nuestro protagonista y aprende de él, Hogarth descubre que el gigante no es malo, se comporta como un niño el cual está aprendiendo de nuevo y esto se debe a un golpe en su cabeza cuando cayó en la tierra.

Según avanza la trama, hay una organización del gobierno destinada a descubrir sucesos extraños que puedan amenazar la seguridad del país, más ahora después del lanzamiento del Sputnik , por lo que un agente investiga y se acerca a descubrir al gigante de hierro, al cual sin conocer, ya considera que es una especie de tecnología extranjera diseñada para hacer más estragos en el país, esto conlleva a una especie de sucesos bastante crudos en cuanto a historias de la humanidad, haciendo ciertos debates en el desarrollo de toda la película, uno de los más importantes y que aunque no se diga de forma explícita, plantea una cuestión, ¿Qué pasaría si algún arma tuviese consciencia o una alma, acaso sería utilizada de la misma manera en que ya la humanidad se aprovecha de ellas o preferiría no seguir con ése camino?

Siento que los mensajes que deja la película va más allá de algo para niños, porque sí, tiene grandes significados como la elección de quién decides ser, el que nadie puede decidir por ti, que sólo importa lo que tú creas de ti y así otros como la importancia de la familia, amigos que estén para ti, pero también otros que quizás de más adultos son más entendibles, como el motivo de las guerras, el cómo las armas son utilizadas sólo para traer destrucción, luchas internas entre lo bueno y lo malo y así muchas cosas más que mientras veía la película no dejaba de pensar que “esto no es algo que un niño entendería” y creo que justo esto es factor de lo siguiente que diré, un dato curioso es que la película fue considerada un fracaso, porque no pudo ni recaudar el presupuesto de la película cuando se estrenó, pero muchos años después, la película es una de las más recordadas con mucho cariño, incluso teniéndola como de las mejores visualmente hablando, con el mensaje que transmite, lo compleja de la trama, podría decir sin miedo que es de las películas más completas y hermosas que existen.

La película tiene para todos los gustos, tiene momentos divertidos, momentos de superación, incertidumbre, miedo, alegrías, sensaciones no tan alegres… Realmente es un conjunto de piezas que encajan a la perfección a medida que la historia va avanzando. La manera de conectar con el robot y el niño, es sin duda lo mágico de la película, aquí me tienen a mí, alguien de 26 años emocionado por escenas que, aunque no recordaba, ahora tienen un lugar guardado en mi corazón y esto es a lo que deberían aspirar las películas, trascender con el tiempo.

Recomiendo en su totalidad la película y espero que la brevedad de la trama que les conté sea un indicio para despertar la curiosidad por verla, en mis reseñas no me gusta contar todo el desarrollo y final de la película, porque siento que pierde un poco el chiste de que te llame la atención pero si ya sabes lo que sucederá es una especie de spoiler y no me gusta hacer eso, por lo que, dejo el final a la incertidumbre pero diciendo que realmente vale la pena ver la película una vez en la vida, ya sea por la trama, por su precioso trabajo visual y por el sentimiento que termina dejando cuando finaliza, denle una oportunidad, oportunidad que no tuvo cuando se estrenó y me apena que haya sido así pero que actualmente sea considerada una joya del cine es una pequeña compensación.
