The Mandalorian - Series 1 - Review

Hello Star Wars fans!

This week I have been watching The Mandalorian first series.

Name - The Mandalorian
Released - 2019
Director - Rick Famuyiwa

It is a fairly recent series furthering the Star Wars genre. The Mandarlorian is a bounty hunter completing missions throughout the galaxy in order to get paid precious metal credits called Beskar to improve his armor. (Think Dog the Bounty Hunter but the sci-fi version).

The timeline is set after the original Star Wars films when the Empire has collapsed. You see throughout the series remnents of the Empire and a new world, less ordered taking place.

The series starts off slow and builds up some of the background history of the main characters and reveals some of the inter-twining story lines that will run throughout the series and possibly beyond.

The series has a similar feel to it as the other series in this genre, but mostly for me, Firefly which was made in 2002. Some of the missions and landing on remote planets on the edge of the galaxy are some of the similarities that struck me the most. They both have run-ins with the current administrations, so are more character focused than having a complete world view that is presented.

The main difference though is that The Mandalorian is Star Wars themed and has lots of great LucasArts historical background and characters to draw from. There are fun droid encounters and scenes involving all the characters you would remember from the films. The whole 50 year old baby Yoda thing is a bit strange, but I guess it holds everything together and ties the series more firmly to the films.

There are many great battle scenes with lasers and cool weapons. The great array of characters from the empire also make for some great sequences and keep the imagination flowing.

My favorite scenes are probably the climatic end to the series and surprises that are presented to you. I can't say too much without giving the storyline away, but the laser battles and confrontations with many different Star Wars characters really bring the show to life.

If I did have a criticism, it would be that The Mandalorian himself though is often at times not really believable as a character and with all the armor and never removing his helmet comes across as very clumbsy and quite far fetched at times. He sounds like The Witcher but less cool.

When he enters some of the bars with other bounty hunters, the entrance scenes are often somewhat comical to behold and you need to use your imagination to believe in it. This doesn't however, detract from the fun of the show.

Overall, I have found it to be a great series to watch and I could recommend it to all sci-fi and particularly Star Wars fans. I am eagerly waiting to start watching the second series now and see how this show further develops.

Thanks for reading & thanks @bozz for the viewing suggestion.

I am with you there Mick, the first 3 were masterpieces, especially the Snow battle with Imperial Walkers and the like. The Mandalorian has been quite good though.

Do you think all these spinoffs have made Star Wars lose its appeal? Or do Star Wars fan lap it all up.

Glad you enjoyed it though Steve

That is all that counts!

I think for many big Star Wars fans, they are enjoying the new spinoffs, but I think the main target is to catch a new younger audience. The recent film where she could fly better than Han Solo was a stretch too far into the imagination though. What do you think Ed? Are you a StarWars fan?

avatar

I like Star Wars, but for me it will always be a cinema thing, not a TV thing if that makes sense.

But yes new younger audiences have to be captured right enough.

avatar

Yeah you cant beat that cinema experience back in the day. It is a shame there is not really anything worth watching at the cinema for a long time.

avatar

i'm not into sci-fiction recently.. I like the more realistic ones hehe.

avatar

hehe yes, it does require a stretching of the imagination.

I have no interest in Disney Plus however I only use this service to watch The Mandalorian and my favorite character in it is Grogu.

avatar

It is a great series so far. I am interested to see what will happen with Grogu.

avatar

If you have not watched seasons 2 and 3 then I won't be spoiling them for you. But one thing is for sure the story arc of Grogu is very interesting all throughout the run time of the show. I promised my daughter I would buy her a plush toy version of Grogu and it costs around about 18 dollars; am waiting for my YouTube earnings to transfer to my bank account and then ill buy it for her.

Ah, that is good to know. 👍 I started season 2 now.

One of my favorite movie series that I will never get tired of watching is Star Wars movie. I have drawn a couple of them over the years and the most recent one is Darth Vader.

avatar

Ah nice one. That is a fun one to draw for sure. I am still working on Pokemons right now as they are fairly simple.

avatar

That's cool. I rarely make those kind of drawings. My last one was Tom and Jerry...somehow relate.
Will be waiting to see it.

As you keep going a lot of the stuff that you don't understand now will make more sense. At least as far as the show. It doesn't necessarily clear things up realistically, but they do at least address it.

Thanks, I'm in series 2 now and enjoying it also. After series 2, I should watch Bobba then series 3?

avatar

Yes, season 2 then the Book of Bobba Fett, then season 3.

avatar

O.O but he doesn't have a lightsaber i don't know :P. If I'm reading it right this is a tv series and not a movie?

avatar

This is a TV series on Disney Plus.

avatar

I see :P. i rarely watch tv series unless anime counts. Not enough time ot watch tv series :(

I'm really mixed on the Mandalorian. I enjoyed the first series - just. Found the second series quite predictable, although the last episode was pretty cool. And then couldnt even get through the first episode of the third series.
I do find it pretty slow in places, and each episode seems to follow the same formulaic plot. And the Bobba fett series seemed very similar too - apart form the sand people episode which was pretty cool.
I just expected more from them.

I think the last couple of episodes really saved the first series for sure. I hope that I will enjoy the rest and it is good to know there are some good episodes to see. The first epsode of series 2 was not so great. It is hard with a brand like Star Wars with high expectations.
