Love and Monsters - Disgusting, but cool

No one can deny that it's beautiful when you search for a movie randomly and without any expectations in the Netflix feed and it turns out to be an unexpected surprise. That's what happened to me with Love and Monsters, a movie set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the human race is forced to live in shelters after many insects and invertebrates mutated and grew to large sizes to the point that they could even eat a human body. This happened after mankind tried to destroy a meteorite with nuclear weapons, which caused radioactive material to spread all over the earth.

So our protagonist Joel, very well played by Dylan O'Brien who we know mostly from Maze Runner, flees with a group to one of the shelters, but in the process he loses his girlfriend who is forced to go to another one. Then, they have no choice but to try to communicate through a radio, but Joel is dying to see his girlfriend again. To keep giving them context, the inhabitants of the shelters must fight day by day to get supplies and in turn must defend themselves from the monstrous creatures before which Joel usually freezes with fear, which obviously does not make him a good warrior.

However, the story begins to come to life when Joel decides to venture to the surface in search of his girlfriend, he makes the decision to feel helpless for not being fully useful for the battles, but despite that and that it is practically a death sentence for him, he takes a bow and arrows and heads towards the shelter where his girlfriend is located several miles away. Everything seems to point to the fact that Joel will die soon, he is nervous, fearful, naive and not at all skilled in battle, but he doesn't seem to care, and well, from here on the movie gets good.

Although it is a post-apocalyptic film in which death stalks and where the hope of the world returning to normality does not exist, the issue is focused with very accentuated tones of comedy on how Joel will manage to survive in a totally adverse environment for him. This is how a couple of fundamental characters appear in the plot since they refresh in a great way an adventure that is practically impossible to end for any human being, but come on, the strength of love and the desire to meet with the one you think is the love of your life can with that and much more.

I won't give you any more spoilers for now because I would really like you to see this fun movie, and I say fun because that's what I really felt. I think that even though there are not many serious moments you get to understand the intention of the director which is nothing more than to entertain the audience with quite decent chase and action scenes from the technical point of view, I say this because we should not underestimate the special effects which surprised me in a big way and it is certainly one of the big plus points that I want to highlight.

Love and Monsters | Official Trailer | Netflix

It is enough to see how well animated the monsters are to realize that they didn't skimp on the budget even though it is not a superhero movie destined to be a box office success, this is very striking to me since it is a movie of the year 2020 which I got to know yesterday and by chance. The performances on the other hand are very well done, Dylan O'Brien did quite well and made me smile a lot with his insecure and nervous attitude, I feel that the character of Joel was made exactly for him.

All in all, Love and Monsters is a movie with some pretty disgusting scenes considering the horrible nature of monsters and giant invertebrates, but it was made for the family to be entertained with a good adventure, good chase scenes and comic relief that is not exaggerated, from my point of view it is all very well balanced. I take this opportunity to invite you to see it, believe me you will not regret it. It was a pleasure to share. See you soon!

I think most of us would be Joel in a situation like this haha but the fact that he made the decision to go looking for his girlfriend, being very scared and nervous, makes him very brave 💪

I like horror-comic that isn't too over the top, so based on your review, I'll give it a chance as soon as I can.

Regards 🦉

I think you have to give it one credit for bringing a slightly fresh and original story but of course you're right there are a lot of holes and things that don't really make sense but I'd still like to see a sequel if they bring it out.

It would be great to see a sequel, I think that universe has plenty of opportunity to develop good plots and of course very good comedy.

Greetings bro!
