Marisol, who was part of a wealthy Venezuelan family, lived her childhood between France, Venezuela and Los Angeles.

But it was in Paris where a tragic event marked the artist forever. When she was 11 years old, her mother committed suicide.

What happened influenced her silent personality and the sparseness of her work, mostly made of wood and plaster, colorful but full of inexpressive faces.

Marisol, says curator Jessica Beck, received an art education from an early age, which she consolidated in her adulthood by attending institutions such as the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Arts Students League in New York and the New School for Social Research, also in the Big Apple.

“The wonderful thing about her story is that as soon as she arrives in New York, she finds recognition,” explains Beck, who adds that it was collector Leo Castelli who in 1957 offered her the opportunity to have a first solo exhibition.

From that moment on, she only reaped success. Her pieces, described as a mixture of pop, folk art and pre-Columbian influences, went through the best galleries in New York, but also reached places like France, Venezuela, Italy and Spain.

Marisol, indica la curadora Jessica Beck, recibió educación artística desde temprana edad, que consolidó en su adultez pasando por instituciones como la École des Beaux-Arts de París, la Arts Students League de Nueva York y New School for Social Research, también en la Gran Manzana.

"Lo maravilloso de su historia es que en cuanto llega a Nueva York, ella encuentra reconocimiento", explica Beck, quien agrega que fue el coleccionista Leo Castelli quien en 1957 le ofreció la oportunidad de tener una primera exposición en solitario.

A partir de ese momento, solo cosechó éxitos. Sus piezas, descritas como una mezcla de pop, arte folk e influencias precolombinas, pasaron por las mejores galerías de Nueva York, pero también llegaron a lugares como Francia, Venezuela, Italia y España.
