Self Reliance (2023): Movie Review
Esta cinta tiene una premisa de lo más interesante, ya que plantea la posibilidad de inscribirte en un reality show donde te jugarás la vida tratando de sobrevivir por 30 días a un grupo de asesinos, siendo la única condición para que no actuen que estés en todo momento acompañado por alguien, y si sobrevives, te ganarás un millón de dólares.

Pero mas alla del premio, ya que casi nadie arriesgaría su vida por casi ningún premio, es ver el contexto detrás de los participantes elegidos, pues los creadores del programa buscan personas que tienen una vida miserable, sin ningun incentivo para seguir adelante, casi llegando al punto de pensar en el suicidio, por lo que poco a poco a medida que los dias pasan, vemos como el protagonista empieza a verle sentido a su existencia, al igual que los errores que ha cometido, por lo que intenta por cualquier medio llegar hasta el final.
But beyond the prize, since almost no one would risk their life for almost any prize, it is to see the context behind the chosen participants, since the creators of the program look for people who have a miserable life, without any incentive to move forward, almost reaching to the point of thinking about suicide, so little by little as the days go by, we see how the protagonist begins to see meaning in his existence, as well as the mistakes he has made, so he tries by any means to reach until the end.

Pero lastimosamente esta premisa es mal desarrollada, ya que pese a que no conocemos al protagonista previo a que comience la trama mas alla de que odia su trabajo y vive con su madre, nos van introduciendo con sus problemas tanto familiares como amorosos, pero a medida que van pasando los días, no vemos que haga un verdadero esfuerzo por reconducir su vida y mejorar sus relaciones, siendo un vagabundo que contrata quien le ayuda en la mayoría del reto, por lo que el mensaje que se intenta dar primero mucha fuerza.
But unfortunately this premise is poorly developed, since although we do not know the protagonist before the plot begins beyond the fact that he hates his job and lives with his mother, we are introduced to his problems, both family and love, but as As the days go by, we do not see that he makes a real effort to redirect his life and improve his relationships, being a homeless man who hires someone to help him in most of the challenge, so the message that is first tried to give a lot of strength.
De igual forma, conocemos otros participantes que le recalcan lo miserable de la vida y como persona sádica disfrutan de eventos como estos, reflejando lo corrompida que esta nuestra sociedad. Así mismo conoce a una chica que refiere que está participando en este espectáculo, siendo ella quien le ayuda a superar su desamor y a mostrarle que la vida no es tan mala, siempre y cuando tengas alguien con quien compartirla y realmente disfrutarla.

En cuanto a las actuaciones, Jake Johnson interpreta a Tommy, quien ademas es el director de la cinta, un hombre que vive hundido en la miseria, un personaje muy representado por este actor, por lo que no nos presenta nada nuevo, mientras que Anna Kendrick hace de Maddy, una chica desdichada, que ante el aburrimiento de su vida y la monotonía, ve la oportunidad en Tommy de vivir nuevas experiencias, siendo quien le da un toque diferente a la trama. También veremos a otros famosos como Andy Samberg, que se interpretan a sí mismos, buscando darle credibilidad al reality show.
As for the performances, Jake Johnson plays Tommy, who is also the director of the film, a man who lives sunk in misery, a character very much represented by this actor, so he does not present us with anything new, while Anna Kendrick plays Maddy, an unhappy girl, who, faced with the boredom and monotony of her life, sees the opportunity in Tommy to live new experiences, being the one who gives a different touch to the plot. We will also see other celebrities like Andy Samberg, who play themselves, seeking to give credibility to the reality show.
La trama de la película me pareció interesante en muchos aspectos, este actor logra manejar los absurdos de gran forma, como por ejemplo el uso del indigente para poder cumplir con la condición de siempre estar acompañado, siendo esta decisión la que le salva la vida, pero inicialmente se la destruye, ya que su familia piensa que está pasando por una crisis mental, perdiendo también su trabajo por esta razón. Otra cosa bastante llamativa son los camarografos, con unas habilidades ninja bastante impresionantes.
I found the plot of the film interesting in many aspects, this actor manages to handle the absurdities in a great way, such as the use of the homeless person to be able to comply with the condition of always being accompanied, this decision being the one that saves his life, but it is initially destroyed, as his family thinks he is going through a mental crisis, also losing his job for this reason. Another quite striking thing are the cameramen, with quite impressive ninja skills.
En conclusión, esta película no es para todo el mundo, por lo que sólo podría recomendarla a personas con un humor o perspectiva de la vida parecida a la mía, y tengo que decir que estoy un poco loco, jajaja. Si te llama la atención historias con constantes absurdos y humor negro, podría parecerte cuando poco interesante, aunque tanto el final como otras subtramas me hubiera gustado que las hubieran manejado un poco diferente.
In conclusion, this movie is not for everyone, so I could only recommend it to people with a humor or perspective on life similar to mine, and I have to say that I am a little crazy, hahaha. If stories with constant absurdities and black humor catch your attention, they might seem uninteresting at best, although both the ending and other subplots I would have liked if they had been handled a little differently.
