"You Raise Me Up", "Celebrity", "Adult Trainee" & "Doona!" - Short Korean Series Review

It took me less than a week to finish all the series on this list I'm about to review and I had a lot of breaks in between so yeah, you could see all of them in a few days. What I mean is, they are very short and interesting series that you'd enjoy your time on them. Great storylines with good lessons to take, well played characters and good cinematography.

These are just a few of what each series has in store for viewers and for your good time but I'll share more about each one of them and hopefully, you'll check at least one of them out.

You Raise Me Up (2021)

8 episodes series - Romance and Comedy, starring Yoon Shi-Yoon and Ahn Hee-yeon.

Honestly, I didn't expect to see such a storyline from a korean series. I thought it's mostly the guys being rich and popular and falling for the humble or poor girl but this one took us on a whole different level with the male character. A story of how difficult and embrassing life can get but how encouraging and uplifting a moment or a word can save such a life.

This short series tells of a young man in his early thirty having a decreased sex drive, preparing for civil service exam for many years and meeting his first love again when he has lost all self esteem. Viewers are made to watch his first love who is a doctor help bring him out of his shell to become a better person.

I think they went a bit too extreme with the embarrassing scenes for the male lead but I guess that is the exact picture they want to show and it was perfectly done. Check it out for an inspiring life story.

Celebrity (2023)

12 Episodes - conspiracy thriller, suspense mystery, starring Park Gyuyoung and Kang Min-hyuk.

A series that reveals the dark sides of social media and celebrities, a young girl meets with old friend who is a celebrity and somehow she began to have thought of becoming one herself unaware of what is to come when she goes too big in the business. Well, she succeeded and surpassed a lot of celebrities in the business but what happened next was unexpected.

While there is a bit of romance in this series, the thriller from the start is more than enough to keep viewers glued to the screen. There were some things I didn't get until the end of the series, well played suspense mystery if you ask me.

The fashion aspect of this series is topnotch, and I really love the female lead on this one. I think she's cut out for roles like this, she played almost same role in "Dali and the cocky prince" which I enjoyed too. You really need to see this one about celebrities.

Adult Trainee (2021)

7 episodes - romance, coming-of-age and comedy, starring six lead characters.

I must confess, the start of this series caught me off guard. I honestly didn't think I'd see a scene like that in a Korean series but I guess it's because I haven't seen any like it before except on other country movies. So yeah, it kept me curious until the end of the series. Another thing that kept me was the introduction to new lead characters after every two episodes, refreshing if you ask me.

The series shows the life of three boys and three girls who are coming-of-age and are falling in love for the first time, with hopes to explore their sex life. One thing that was common for all the characters was that, they decided to stay friends until they are adults even though they love each other, no wonder the title says "Adult Trainee".

Doona! (2023)

9 episodes - coming-of-age, feelgood romance and comedy, starring Bae Suzy and Yang Se-jong.

This one has got to be my most favourite from the list. One that kept me blushing and smiling over and over after the first few scenes. And I mean, from where the lady falls first and the guy falls harder. The series introduces a new face that I'm definitely going to check out more of his movies because of how well he played his role.

Yang Se-jong is a school age young guy who finds himself in the same homestay with a once celebrity that is struggling with depression. They both hit it off on a wrong note but began to fall for each other just before she is called back to stardom. The outcome of their relationship at the end wasn't what many viewers would wish for but it wasn't bad at all.

So tell me, have you seen any of these series? Share what you think. And will you check any one of them? Let me know in the comment section

Adult Trainee... the name has a very porn-ish vibe to it 🤣

If you like Asian series now, I recommend "Alice in Borderland". I think that one was amazing!

Haha it is!

Will check it out, thanks for recommending.

I downloaded a episode one of Doona and after watching some few scenes, I concluded that it was boring , I think I'd have to go back and check it out again, just maybe I might enjoy the movie.

Yeah, the first episodes seem boring but it got interesting for me 😅

Doona lacked humour. I didn't enjoy the first few episodes but because I hate leaving dramas halfway, I continued. I loved the storyline and I didn't expect it to end that way.
Among everything you've mentioned and I've watched, Celebrity is my favourite. Although I wasn't even able to differentiate some characters till the end😂

Doona sure did lack humour, I just enjoyed the lovey dovey part of it from the lead and supporting characters 😅

Lol seriously?! Celebrity was a really good storyline, the thriller was on point. I didn't find difficulty differentiating them but yeah, there were too many characters in them.
