17 year Cicada
Periodical cicadas are only found in the eastern half of the United States
The 17-year Brood XIII is the only one known to emerge in Wisconsin, though only in the southernmost counties. The last hatch was in 2007.
These cicadas have just emerged and shed their exoskeleton. Their new adult body and wings are exposed. “The wings will inflate with fluid and expand, and their new skin will harden—which typically takes several day. .
This bunch of cicadas will mate and lay eggs up in the tree branches. When the eggs hatch the nymphs will fall to the ground and burrow into the dirt and live underground for 17 years, feeding on tree roots, before they emerge and the whole cycle starts over again.
These holes are everywhere!
Cicadas do not bite, but with so many around it is startling if one flys too close! Or lands on you.
They will live above ground for about 4-6 weeks before dying.
And for the next month
It will be noisy here in my woods!

Beautiful photos. Truly, the things created by nature are amazing.
THey are singing here too, but we have both and I don't know enough about them, but there are two different ones here who come out at different amount of years, but every so often, like this year, they both come up the same year and talking about a whirl that sounds like alien space ships whirling through the sky..... well, some nights are louder than others and sometimes it's almost a pleasant softer whirr in the day. So neat.
The animal is very beautiful and I like looking at its eyes which are quite beautiful.

Wow, there are lots of crickets. It's a myth where I live that if the crickets appear, it's a sign that the long dry season will start 😃

It's the first time I've heard of 17 years cicadas, and it's impressive.
I'm used to cicadas in the south of France, which are also quite big and noisy, but it's not unpleasant.

They sure are noisy little creatures! I've never lived where they hatched when they were hatching so I've never seen them or heard them in person. I understand they are loud enough to damage your hearing. You may want to use earplugs outside!

You know I always had an appreciation for these guys. I remember running into one here and there throughout the years. I've always found them to be really cool bugs. Yet that picture of them being everywhere is intense. I've only seen them one or two at a time and with years in between. !LUV
