Boyhood isn't an Ordinary Movie
Listen, Boyhood (2014) is not an ordinary movie, it's a crazy cinematic project, because director Richard Linklater decided to film it over the course of 12 years with the same actors! Yes, by God, the same family, the same characters, but time is what really changes, and this is something that has never been done before in the same way.
The story is simple
The movie tells the story of Mason, an American child whom we see from the age of 6 until he becomes a young man at 18. During these years we follow his life and his relationship with his divorced mother and father his school problems and his friendships which are his first love, and his dreams that change every now and then. The movie doesn't have a traditional plot or contrived drama, but it is realistic in a strange way that makes you feel like you are watching your life being presented on the screen.
What's good about the movie?
The idea of watching the same actors grow up naturally without makeup or cinematic tricks is something unnatural, and it makes you feel like you've really grown up with them. The movie doesn't have exaggerated drama or huge action moments, it's just life walking in front of you with its ups and downs.
The child Ellar developed before our eyes and Patricia Arquette who played his mother, gave a great performance and won an Oscar for it.
So what might bother you?
The movie isn't made for everyone, because it's long (about 3 hours) and doesn't have any major events. If you like action and excitement, you might get bored, and the movie is more like a normal diary than a story with a clear beginning, climax, and end.
Boyhood isn't an ordinary movie but it's a cinematic experience that wont be easily repeated. If you like realistic movies that touch you on a personal level, you'll like this movie. But if you are looking for a movie with shocks and events that turn the world upside down, you may feel that it is long for nothing.
