Battlestar Galactica The Original Series
I used to watch this as a kid when it was on tv a few years after its original release. This fun bit captures the spirit of the show. The resourceful fleeing human colonials make things go pear shaped for the genocidal Cylons in a big way in this episode. This was my favorite tv show way back in the early 80s.
The new Galactica that came out in the 2000s feels like a different series. The Cylons have infiltration models that pass for humans. The traitor of the colonies, Baltar, is as depraved as in the original but his motivations are somewhat different from the Baltar in the old series.
The 1970s original looks much more cheaply made than the 21st century remake, of course. But it was so exciting.
Did you also watch Battlestar Galactica as a child or maybe later? Did you ever see the original series?
I watched Battlestar Galactica during its ordinal run, but not all the time as I was frequently studying for exams or working. I did see the theatrical release as well, which is a bit different as in that version of the opening of the saga, the Cylons execute Baltar,
Also, I have a lot of stories that I can share sometime about the original series.
My bonnie Bride and I watched the reboot, but only the first season. We both found it too dark and did not like a lot of the character changes they made (example - in the original, Colonel Tigh, played by Terry Carter, was a real cool Black dude. While in the reboot, Tigh was an alcoholic White dude and real jerk).
Starbuck, Boomer and Colonel Tigh were cool guys. I liked Commander Adama as well. It's sad they made Tigh an alcoholic, white or not.
I think I must've been around 8 years old when I first saw Battlestar Galactica. The special effects, the space battles and the Cylons were so exciting. It took me a while to pay attention to the fact that the Cylons actually looked as if they had a guy wearing all black track pants with a robot costume on top inside, which was practically the case. The way they walked wasn't always very robotic.
The reboot was much darker. The original had stuff for kids like Muffy the Daggit who was played by a chimp called Evie.
surprisingly, I did not know that bit of trivia about the daggit. Glen Larson, the exec producer, was a busy guy at the time as he also had Buck Rogers going. Both series took a hit when the strike came, and reformatted their second season with disastrous results.
I don't know what became of the film Richard shot back in the mid '90s, but Richard had some of the last footage of John Colicos, reprising the role of Baltar, back when he was trying to get a series relaunch. His take on the project didn't get picked up, but it did eventually result in the reboot series.
