Maybe my taste for gothic things and dark fantasy comes from the fact that I had seen things like that since I was very young. It's probably not the most advisable thing, but the truth is that during my childhood I got to see movies like The Crow. Although honestly, since I watch it when I was so young I had forgotten a large part of the story, but recently I decided to rewatch this classic film after finding out that they had made a remake last year.
So I saw both adaptations, because let's remember that this story comes from a comic book under the same name, and in this post I will tell you my opinion on both including some spoilers.
The Crow (1994)
It is undeniable that most of the fuss that this film had was due to the terrible incident that occurred on the set, which unfortunately ended the life of Brandon Lee, who played the protagonist. But beyond that event, it must be recognized that the story is genuinely good. The premise is interesting, the idea that a vengeful spirit returns from the grave through a mystical link with a crow to end the lives of those who killed him and his partner is simply great. Apart from that, they do not try to impose the stigmas of a superhero or anything similar on him, Erick is a soul in pain who will not be able to find eternal rest until he manages to detach himself from the anger that has consumed him since that night full of horrors.
The protagonist does not seek to do justice, much less free the world from evil, he is only interested in getting even, causing enormous suffering to those who caused him and Shelly unspeakable pain. Of course the plot has him confronting more people, but the character never becomes some kind of vigilante. He only seeks eternal rest. If you ask me, this is a quintessential gothic story.
The film follows the story in a non-linear way, so it is through flashbacks that we see memories of the protagonists and understand the events. With little, just at the beginning, we can understand the intentions of all those involved because they are established clearly, without beating around the bush. You know that the bad guys are really bad just because they are, and the good guys are really noble. You also understand how even those who are supposed to be good end up giving in to their emotions, full of anger, resentment and frustration, because they are not the typical morally correct characters, they are simply flawed humans, like all of us. This makes all the stories more moving, because you empathize with the characters feeling that you have some aspects in common.
My favorite character is obviously Erick because he is a protagonist who not only has supernatural powers, but has more depth. We see his suffering, his excessive rage, his thirst for revenge, his violence and therefore, his morality which is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum because he is not essentially bad, because we can also see his noble side, his good intentions, the love he felt for his loved ones and even his innocence, because before everything happened he was just a musician who lived quietly. These aspects give nuances to the character and make him interesting.
Although there is no detailed explanation of why Erick has that bond with the crow, I think it is not necessary because the film clearly wants to tell a story with an obvious dark fantasy tone that makes everything more entertaining and interesting, but it also seeks to criticize the excesses of today's society, how some people live in an unbridled and selfless way, ruining the lives of others for personal pleasure. We live in violent times, where things like what happened to Shelly and Erick, two totally normal and calm people, happen many times every day in different parts of the world.
It is a dark way of transmitting the message but no less true. Today we are all prone to becoming lost souls.
Ultimately, this is a story that deserves to be considered a classic. It is incredibly written and directed, visually it fits perfectly with what the story tells, which is complemented by the soundtrack and the incredible performances of the entire cast. The Crow is one of the best films of the era.
The Crow (2024)
I'm a huge fan of Bill Skarsgård so when I saw that he would be the lead actor I really had faith that the remake would be good, but I was very wrong. Although this is not the fault of any of the actors, they did what they could with what they had, but the truth is that it is unfortunate to see what they did with this classic. I usually put very little faith in remake projects because usually and for some reason that I cannot understand, they all end up losing the essence of the story. When re-adapting it, it is normal for some things to change, for example, evidently life in 1994 is not the same as in 2024, so many things must have a significant change. But that does not mean that the origin, motivations and personality of the characters must be literally completely changed because if you do that, you are already creating a story that has nothing to do with the original. It is taking elements of what was and starting practically from scratch.
Visually, the film is incredible, that's for sure. If the original version had had today's technology to achieve certain scenes, it would have been absurdly perfect. The truth is that it's the only thing worth mentioning here, but the problem with this director is that, he relies too much on the visual impact but gives very little support to the narrative. What's the point when the story doesn't respect the original and is barely coherent in itself? It's a totally wasted potential. The key was to adapt certain aspects to make it a more modern story and in keeping with our current times without modifying the main elements. It had to keep the same essence, the same events and the same outcome, which frankly in this case wasn't very difficult to achieve since the main problem and the message that it wanted to convey hasn't really changed much over the years.
I understand that we can like a story so much that we would love to rewrite it our way so that things turn out the way we want them to, that often happens, but when you take so many creative liberties and end up giving it a different approach and completely changing the characters, you just ruin it. What do these drug addicts Shelly and Erick with genuinely questionable morality and behavior have to do with the nobility and pure love between the originals? Nothing. What does this Erick have of the imposing spirit, the desire to drain the rage that still keeps him on the earthly plane, of the overwhelming frustration and pain for the loss of true love and life itself? Little or nothing at all. Overall, this new version is disappointing.
Now the question is: Is it worth watching? Well, if you want to see something visually striking, yes, but the truth is that the story leaves a lot to be desired. I don't think it's a good reinterpretation by any means, although it could have been. But unfortunately it failed miserably in execution.

Quizás mi gusto por las cosas góticas y la fantasía oscura viene de que desde muy pequeña había visto cosas por el estilo. Probablemente no es lo más recomendable, pero lo cierto es que durante mi infancia llegué a ver películas como El Cuervo. Aunque sinceramente como la vi tan joven había olvidado gran parte de la historia, pero hace poco decidí volver a ver este clásico del cine tras enterarme que habían hecho un remake el año pasado.
Así que vi ambas adaptaciones, porque recordemos que esta historia viene de un cómic bajo el mismo nombre, y en este post les comentaré mi opinión sobre ambas incluyendo spoilers.
El Cuervo (1994)
Es innegable que la mayor parte del revuelo que tuvo esta película fue por el terrible incidente que ocurrió en el set, que lamentablemente terminó con la vida Brandon Lee, quien interpretó al protagonista. Pero más allá de ese suceso, se debe reconocer que la historia es genuinamente buena. La premisa es interesante, la idea de que un espíritu vengador vuelva de la tumba a través de un vínculo místico con un cuervo para acabar con la vida de quienes lo asesinaron a él y a su pareja es sencillamente genial. Aparte no intentan imponerle los estigmas de superhéroe ni nada similar, Erick es un alma en pena que no podrá encontrar el descanso eterno hasta que logre desprenderse de la ira que lo consume desde aquella noche llena de horrores.
El protagonista no busca hacer justicia, mucho menos liberar al mundo del mal, a él solo le interesa desquitarse, causarles un sufrimiento enorme a quienes le causaron a él y a Shelly un dolor indecible. Por supuesto la trama lo lleva a enfrentarse a más personas, pero el personaje jamás llega a ser una especie de justiciero. Él solo busca es descanso eterno. Si me lo preguntan a mí, esta es una historia gótica por excelencia.
La película sigue la historia de forma no lineal, así que es a través de flashbacks que vamos viendo recuerdos de los protagonistas y comprendiendo los hechos. Con poco, apenas al inicio, podemos entender las intenciones de todos los involucrados porque son establecidas de forma clara, sin rodeos. Sabes que los malos son malos porque sí, y los buenos son realmente nobles. También comprendes cómo incluso los que se supone que son buenos terminan cediendo a sus emociones, cargados de ira, resentimiento y frustración, porque no son los típicos personajes moralmente correctos, son simplemente humanos defectuosos, como todos nosotros. Esto hace que todas las historias sean más conmovedoras, porque empatizas con los personajes sintiendo que tienes algunos aspectos en común.
Mi personaje favorito obviamente es Erick porque es un protagonista que no solo tiene poderes sobrenaturales, sino que tiene más profundidad. Vemos su sufrimiento, su rabia desmesurada, su sed de venganza, su violencia y por tanto, su moralidad que está en algún lugar en medio del espectro pues él no es esencialemnte malo, porque también podemos ver su lado noble, sus buenas intenciones, el amor que sentía por sus seres queridos e incluso su inocencia, porque antes de que todo ocurriera él era solo un músico que vivía tranquilo. Estos aspectos le dan matices al personaje y lo hacen interesante.
Aunque no hay una explicación muy detallada de porqué Erick tiene ese vínculo con el cuervo, creo que tampoco hace demasiada falta porque la película claramente desea contar una historia con un evidente matiz de fantasía oscura que hace todo más entretenido e interesante, pero también busca criticar los excesos de la sociedad actual, el cómo algunas personas viven de forma desenfrenada y desinteresada, arruinando la vida de otros por el mero placer personal. Vivimos en tiempos violentos, donde cosas como las que les ocurrieron a Shelly y Erick, dos personas totalmente normales y tranquilas, pasan montones de veces a diario en diferentes partes del mundo.
Es una forma oscura de transmitir el mensaje pero no por ello menos cierto. Hoy en día todos somos propensos a convertirnos en almas en pena.
En definitiva esta es una historia que se merece ser considerada un clásico. Esta increíblemente escrita y dirigida, visualmente cuadra perfectamente con lo que la historia narra, cosa que a la vez es complementada con la banda sonora y las increíbles actuaciones del reparto entero. El Cuervo es de las mejores películas de la época.
El Cuervo (2024)
Soy muy fan de Bill Skarsgård por lo que cuando vi que él sería el actor principal realmente tuve fe de que el remake sería bueno, pero estaba muy equivocada. Aunque esto no es culpa de ninguno de los actores, ellos hicieron lo que pudieron con lo que tenían, pero la verdad es lamentable ver lo que hicieron con este clásico. Suelo poner muy poca fe en proyectos de remake porque usualmente y por algún motivo que no logro comprender, todos terminan perdiendo la esencia de la historia. Al readaptarla es normal que algunas cosas cambien, por ejemplo, evidentemente la vida en 1994 no es la misma que en el 2024, por lo que muchas cosas deben tener un cambio significativo. Pero eso no quiere decir que se deba literalmente cambiar por completo el origen, motivaciones y personalidad de los personajes porque si se hace así, ya estamos creando una historia que no tiene nada que ver con la original. Es tomar elementos de lo que fue y comenzar prácticamente desde cero.
Visualmente la película es increíble, eso sí. Si la versión original hubiese contado con la tecnología actual para lograr ciertas escenas, habría sido absurdamente perfecta. La verdad es lo único destacable aquí, pero el problema con éste director es ese, confía demasiado en el impacto visual y pero da muy poco sustento en la narrativa. ¿De qué sirve cuando la historia no respeta la original y apenas es coherente en sí misma? Es un potencial totalmente desperdiciado. La clave estaba en adaptar ciertos aspectos para hacerla una historia más moderna y acorde a nustro tiempo actual sin modificar los elementos principales. Tenía que conservar la misma esencia, los mismos hechos y el mismo desenlace que francamente en este caso no era muy difícil de lograr puesto que la problemática principal y el mensaje que desea transmitir en realidad no ha cambiado con los años.
Entiendo que una historia puede gustarnos tanto que nos encantaría reescribirla a nuestra manera para que las cosas salgan como queremos, eso suele pasar, pero cuando te tomas tantas libertades creativas y terminas dándole un enfoque distinto y cambiando completamente a los personajes, simplemente lo arruinas. ¿Qué tienen que ver estos Shelly y Erick drogadictos con moralidad y comportamientos genuinamente cuestionables con la nobleza y el amor puro entre los originales? Nada. ¿Qué tiene éste Erick del espíritu imponente, el deseo de lograr drenar la rabia que aún lo mantiene en el plano terrenal, de la frustración y dolor tan abrumadores por la pérdida del amor verdadero y la vida misma? Poco o nada en lo absoluto. En general, esta nueva versión es decepcionante.
Ahora la pregunta es: ¿vale la pena verla? Pues si quieres ver algo visualmente llamativo sí, pero la verdad a nivel de historia deja muchísimo que desear. No me parece ni de lejos una reinterpretación buena, aunque pudo haberlo sido. Pero lamentablemente falló miserablemente en la ejecución.

Vi el tráiler de la nueva versión y de allí me pareció que la trama no sería la mejor es una lástima como señalas por el actor que interpreta el personaje, pero al leerte y ver que aquí han puesto a los drogadictos como víctimas me he quedado en shock, no digo que no existan drogadictos que lo sean, pero no podemos seguir normalizando este tema como algunos otros, así que después de leer tan excelente comparación entre ambas versiones ya sé que esperar.
Sí, realmente es un desperdicio del talento del actor. Mi problema no es tanto con que pongan la drogadicción como algo normal, eso es otro tema, mi desagrado fue que cambiaran tanto los personajes. Shelly y Erick no eran tal cosa, al contrario, eran personas demasiado pacíficas y dentro de lo ordinario que por mala suerte se toparon con la gente equivocada, precisamente los que vivían de los excesos. Entonces la historia carece del impacto emocional de la primera, además de muchos errores más.
En fin, es una lástima.

Hola amiga hace poco hice una review de "El Cuervo" (1994) he visto todas las películas del cuervo, y te digo que desde la primera peli, que lastimosamente murió el gran BRANDON LEE 😌 debieron dejar esa peli así. Un solo cuervo, a pesar del tiempo la historia fue perfecta y fue una gran actuación, pero las demas no me gustaron :(.

Hola, @davixesk8 . Estoy muy de acuerdo contigo. Ya la primera película fue perfecta, debió ser la única. Pero Hollywood e incluso los mismos espectadores tienen un problema grande con dejar las cosas en el pasado. En vez de disfrutarlas como fueron, intentan exprimir la historia lo más que puedan, y eso por lo general no sale bien.

Bill Skarsgård is an excellent actor, we cannot blame him or any of the actors in the cast of the Crow movie. I think that since the sad tragedy happened during the filming of Brandon Lee's "The Crow" we were all left with a mark, apart from the fact that this movie is spectacular. We thought that there will never be another Crow like that.

I totally agree with you, it isn't about the cast, it's the script and the whole execution of the film. They had an idea but didn't develop it well enough. It's a shame. The first movie is one of a kind, nothing can top that.
