Cult cinema is a part of the seventh art that I have only recently begun to immerse myself in. Although I still have a lot of titles to watch, the truth is that the most recent film I have seen is Pulp Fiction, released in 1994 by director Quentin Tarantino. Its story about crime, violence, drama and black humor has been one of the most acclaimed by movie lovers and in today's post I will tell you my opinion about it with spoilers.
Synopsis
In this film we will see a set of stories marked by violence, drugs and the harshness of that world where everything carries a risk. In an intertwined way we will learn about the lives of Vincent, Jules, Mia, Butch, Marcellus Wallace and others who, due to their decisions, are irremediably involved in situations marked by a lot of blood...
Although it is a film full of strong scenes that may be hard to tolerate for some people, the message, far from praising the behavior of most of the characters, in fact, shows how incredibly self-destructive violence can be. Every action generates a reaction and every decision carries a risk that can sometimes be very high. In a very raw way, the story reflects that no matter how cool or exciting the world of drugs and the mafia may seem, in reality there is nothing good in excessive violence.
All the characters in one way or another suffer the consequences of their bad actions, which leads them to reflect on their lives and what they do with them. Although some do not manage to redeem themselves, those who do manage to do so transmit the message of reflection. Is it worth risking your life for some excitement? Does violence leave something good? To what extent are you destroying yourself and why? Is it worth it?... These are some of the messages that can be taken from the film but the way it is written its meaning is quite subtle. It is obvious but not too obvious, so instead of feeling preached to with some kind of anti-drug campaign, it is more like shock therapy, because the consequences are seen in a very raw and impressive way.
However, it is undeniable that the characters are cool, all of them are charismatic, despite their questionable morality. They all have a certain charm that makes you sympathize with them, and that may make the consequences of their actions impact you more. When a character is too cool you don't really expect anything to happen to them, so that is a notable element here. I insist, your actions have repercussions.
Also something remarkable about the film is that the character development is equally subtle, demonstrating Tarantino's incredible talent for writing his stories. The dialogues seem too simple, conversations that if you don't pay much attention to them can even seem absurd. They give you the feeling that they shouldn't be part of the script. But in reality this gives them a certain more realistic nuance because they indirectly show you elements of each character's personality that without being direct are a clear example of their way of thinking. For example, from the beginning it is evident that the most thoughtful and calculating person is Jules, and the most impulsive and careless is Vincent, and you know this not because they say it explicitly but because of their reactions to different situations.
On the other hand, despite being a story full of fiction, it is also a crude reflection of social reality, perhaps more from an American point of view, but violence is a phenomenon that can be understood from any part of the world and its consequences as well. With certain comic scenes they achieve a relief that distracts you a little from the stronger scenes, but these are the most common and the central point, making you see clearly the problems that really affect part of society.
To represent it in one way, Mia does not exist, obviously, but people like Mia do and there's plenty of them. Marcellus does not exist either, but the mafia is the order of the day in different parts of the world. So this film is a very stylized way of telling the most mundane situations that can be found in real life.
The acting and dialogue are simply amazing. For this project, all the elements came together to make a film of the highest quality, the main one being the talent of the director (who by the way plays a supporting character very well too) and at the same time there is the cast that perfectly understood their characters and the message of the film. My favorite character and performance is without a doubt Jules, that is, Samuel L. Jackson. He has an amazing talent, playing his character so naturally that it seems like that is his true personality. I can say the same about the rest of the cast, they are all incredible in their role.
Also visually the film is beautiful. Although the shots are not extraordinary, they are just enough to fit the story. But aesthetically they are still visually pleasing and harmonious. I also have to highlight that the non-linear chronological order is very well achieved because at first you don't imagine that the stories are connected, but as the film progresses the connections are slowly and subtly presented, making the fact of seeing the union of everything at the end, take you a bit by surprise. Everything has a coherence that is logical.
But of course I cannot ignore the fact that this is not a story for everyone, as there are themes and scenes that can be disturbing for sensitive people. In particular, when Marcellus and Butch are kidnapped, it personally made me feel quite uncomfortable, which is completely the intention, but if you are not used to that type of story, it can be very unpleasant to watch.
Therefore, Pulp Fiction is a masterpiece that mixes fiction with harsh reality, and I highly recommend watching it. It is a classic that is totally worth it.

El cine de culto es una parte del séptimo arte en la que he comenzado a sumergirme hace muy poco tiempo. Aunque aún tengo un montón de tÃtulos por ver, lo cierto es que la más reciente pelÃcula que he visto es Pulp Fiction (o Tiempos Violentos), publicada en 1994 del director Quentin Tarantino. Su historia sobre crimen, violencia, drama y humor negro ha sido una de las más aclamadas por los amantes de las pelÃculas y en el post de hoy les comentaré mi opinión con spoilers.
Sinopsis
En esta pelÃcula veremos un conjunto de historias marcadas por la violencia, las drogas y la crudeza de ese mundo donde todo conlleva un riesgo. De manera entrelazada conoceremos la vida de Vincent, Jules, Mia, Butch, Marcellus Wallace y otros quienes por sus decisiones están irremediablemente involucrados en situaciones marcadas por mucha sangre...
Aunque es una pelÃcula cargada de escenas fuertes que quizás sean poco tolerables para algunas personas, el mensaje lejos de alabar las conductas de la mayorÃa de personajes, de hecho, demuestra lo increÃblemente autodestructiva que puede ser la violencia. Toda acción genera una reacción y toda decisión conlleva un riesgo que en ocasiones puede ser muy alto. De forma muy cruda la historia refleja que por muy cool o emocionante que pueda parecer el mundo de las drogas y la mafia, en realidad no hay nada bueno en la violencia desmedida.
Todos los personajes de alguna u otra manera sufren las consecuencias de sus malos actos, lo cual los lleva a reflexionar sobre su vida y lo que hacen con ella. Aunque algunos no llegan a redimirse, quienes sà lo logran trasmiten el mensaje de reflexión. ¿Vale la pena arriesgar tu vida por algo de emoción? ¿La violencia deja algo bueno? ¿Hasta qué punto estás destruyéndote a ti mismo y por qué? ¿Vale la pena?... Estos son algunos de los mensajes que se pueden sacar de la pelÃcula pero por la manera en que está escrita su significado es bastante sutil. Resulta evidente pero no demasiado obvio, por lo que en vez de sentirte sermoneado con una especie de campaña antidrogas, es más como una terapia de shock, porque las consecuencias se ven de una forma muy cruda e impresionante.
Sin embargo, es innegable que los personajes son cool, todos son carismáticos, a pesar de su moralidad cuestionable. Todos tienen cierto encanto que hace que simpatices con ellos, y puede ser que eso haga que las consecuencias de sus actos te impacten más. Cuando un personaje es demasiado genial no esperas realmente que algo le suceda, por lo que aquà eso es un elemento destacable. Insisto, tus actos tienen repercusiones.
También algo destacable de la pelÃcula es que el desarrollo de personajes es igualmente sutil, demostrando el increÃble talento de Tarantino para escribir sus historias. Los diálogos parecen demasiado simples, conversaciones a las que si no les prestas mucha atención pueden parecer incluso absurdas. Te dan la sensasión de que no deberÃan ser parte del guión. Pero en realidad esto les aporta un cierto matiz más realista porque de manera indirecta te muestran elementos de la personalidad de cada personaje que sin ser directos son un claro ejemplo de su forma de pensar. Por ejemplo, desde el inicio es evidente que el más reflexivo y calculador es Jules, y el más impulsivo y descuidado es Vincent, esto lo sabes no porque lo digan explÃcitamente sino por sus reacciones a las distintas situaciones.
Por otro lado, a pesar de ser una historia llena de ficción es también un crudo reflejo de la realidad social, quizás más desde un punto de vista norteamericano, pero la violencia es un fenómeno que puede entenderse desde cualquier parte del mundo y las consecuencias también. Con ciertas escenas cómicas logran un alivio que te distrae un poco de las escenas más fuertes, pero éstas son las más comunes y el punto central, haciendo que veas claramente los problemas que en realidad afectan a parte de la sociedad.
Por representarlo de una manera, Mia no existe, evidentemente, pero personas como Mia sà y abundan. Marcellus tampoco existe, pero la mafia está a la orden del dÃa en distintas partes del mundo. Entonces esta pelÃcula es una forma muy estilizada de contar las situaciones más mundanas que se pueden encontrar en la vida real.
Las actuaciones y diálogos son simplemente increÃbles. Para este proyecto se unieron todos los elementos para hacer un film de la más alta calidad, siendo el principal el talento del director (que por cierto hace muy bien el papel como personaje secundario también) y a su vez está el elenco que comprendió a la perfección sus personajes y el mensaje de la pelÃcula. Mi personaje y actuación favorita es sin duda Jules, es decir, Samuel L. Jackson. Tiene un talento asombroso, interpretando su personaje con tanta naturalidad que parece que esa fuese su verdadera personalidad. Lo mismo puedo decir del resto del reparto, todos son increÃbles en su rol.
Además visualmente la pelÃcula es preciosa. Aunque no es que los planos sean extraordinarios, son lo justo y necesario para ir acorde a la historia. Pero estéticamente siguen siendo visualmente agradables y armoniosos. También tengo que destacar que el orden cronológico no lineal está muy bien conseguido pues al principio no imaginas que las historias están conectadas, pero a medida que avanza la pelÃcula se van presentando lenta y sutilmente las conexiones, haciendo que ver la unión de todo al final te tome un poco por sorpresa. Todo tiene una coherencia que resulta lógica.
Pero por supuesto no puedo dejar de lado que esta no es una historia para cualquiera pues hay temas y escenas que pueden ser perturbadoras para personas sensibles. En concreto cuando Marcellus y Butch están secuestrados personalmente me hizo sentir bastante incómoda, que es completamente la intención, pero si no estás acostumbrado a ese tipo de historias puede ser muy desagradable de ver.
Por lo tanto, Pulp Fiction es una obra maestra que mezcla la ficción con la cruda realidad, y recomiendo bastante verla. Es un clásico que vale totalmente la pena.
No es uno de mis géneros preferidos pero los actores me gustan y se ve buena. . Gracias por la recomendación.

The films of yesteryear had fewer restrictions than those of today perhaps that's also why it can be strong. Hat great actors, maybe I'll take a look at it.

Pulp fiction is a masterpiece for more generations to come. I even went back to watch it again when I was running a movie classics weekend with the likes of The Godfather, Goodwill Hunting and Police Academy.

Qué bueno que estés descubriendo este tipo de pelÃculas que aunque no sean recientes son muy buenas. No creo que Pulp Fiction sea la mejore pelÃcula de Tarantino (prefiero Kill Bill o Bastardos sin gloria) pero entiendo el encanto que tiene aún hoy en dÃa.
Buen post, das una reseña y tu opinión sin spoilers y sin juicios muy extremos. Te recomiendo también Reservoir Dogs del mismo director y de una época cercana.

SÃ, poco a poco iré viendo más de estas joyas del cine. Kill Bill la vi muy pequeña y probablemente haya olvidado muchas cosas, tengo que verla de nuevo. Pulp Fiction pues es la que más me ha atrapado hasta ahora, pero seguramente haya otras de Tarantino que son mejores. Ya lo descubriré.
También tomaré tu sugerencia y veré Reservoir Dogs porque me llama bastante la atención el tÃtulo.
