Cape Fear: Justice taken to obsession (ESP/ENG)
Hasta qué punto un abogado defensor debe ser fiel a su juramento? Esa es la premisa que mueve los hilos de esta historia basada en la novela de Jhon McDonald, los excursionistas, que fue llevada al cine en dos oportunidades, siendo la dirigida por Martin Scorsese la segunda versión, de la cual comentaré.
Esta película, estrenada en 1991, me acompañó durante mi adolescencia, puesto que solían transmitirla con mucha frecuencia por los canales de TV abierta que sólo existían para entonces. Y cada vez que la veía, encontraba sin saber, cabos que iba hilando en mi mente de manera distinta, producto de la madurez y luego del conocimiento propio de la carrera que elegí estudiar.
Ahora, muchos años después de ese primer contacto, la vuelvo a ver, y mi interpretación obviamente vuelve a cambiar, sin dejar de lado mi fascinación por el personaje interpretado por Robert de Niro.
Llámenme loca, pero debo confesar que los personajes trastornados que ha interpretado Robert de Niro, son los que han hecho que mi adoración a este actor aumente cada día más, así como también mi admiración hacia Scorsese y su capacidad de sacar en él, los lados más oscuros de una personalidad.
Primero fue Travis Bickle en "Taxi Driver" y luego con Max Cady, el violador de "cabo de miedo, ambos personajes con un trastorno producto de una vida que los ha favorecido poco y que actúan buscando venganza para redimir sus propios pecados.
En Cabo de Miedo vemos a un De Niro que luego de una condena por violación, concentra su frustración basándose en una meta (no muy ética) dejando la violencia que típicamente nos muestran en el interior de la cárcel, aprovechando el tiempo para formarse y convertirse en su propio abogado.
Y aunque pocos dominan esta información, en prisión existen estas opciones, no son solo espacios para retener personas a que esperen el paso del tiempo, sino que también están aquellos que les permiten estudiar,perfeccionar un arte y prepararlos para el mundo que verán cuando salgan de ahí, solo que las circunstancias internas y el roce con la miseria, a veces puede más que las ganas de mejorar.
Pero Cady lo hizo. Pasó de ser un ignorante a un abogado, quien a pesar de habérsele negado sus solicitudes de apelación constantes, cumple su condena y sale preparado... pero también obsesionado con la venganza para con el que debía defenderlo y no hundirlo un poco más.
La presencia de una Juliete Lewis, como la hija del defensor Sam Bowden interpretado por Nick Nolte, es la manzana de la tentación que los vuelve a enlazar. Ella desconoce los hechos previos entre su padre y el ex convicto, y expresa su rebeldía ante las normas parentales, aceptando la amistad de Cady, sin saber que ello sería el inicio de una pesadilla.
Este film nos muestra el lado retorcido de una mente criminal que cree que su realidad no es controversial, es solo tomar lo que desea, como un animal que caza por comer y que luego deja la mitad de la presa.
Una joya del cine de terror psicológico llevada de la mano por ángulos de cámara poco ortodoxos que llegan inclusive a marearnos tratando de ver cual es el punto focal que debemos detallar. Así como también nos invita a cuestionarnos los límites éticos que debe tener un abogado, pues Bowden ocultó información para lograr la condena, siendo él quien debía defender a Cady.
Esto justo me hace recordar a una amiga abogada, quien siendo defensora pública tuvo como clientes a narcotraficantes, violadores y estafadores, y el cómo ella tenía que manejarse en ese submundo sin caer en las tentaciones de parte y parte. Es realmente un trabajo no apto para una persona de mente débil.
En la película, la icónica escena de De Niro aferrado al chasis del auto en donde escapa Bowden con su familia, es reconocida inclusive por aquellos que han visto este film solo una vez, siendo un meme en la época en la cual todavía no se usaba este término, para expresar la obsesión por seguir algo o alguien.
Al final, la lucha entre el bien y el mal, con todos los elementos en contra de ambos bandos, se puede extrapolar a aquellas situaciones en las que nos encontramos en una encrucijada sobre cómo hubiese sido la historia si reaccionábamos de una manera distinta.
Acaso Cady se hubiese regenerado en un centro psiquiátrico? Por qué Bowden no renunció al caso? Se puede regenerar a un violador? Hasta donde debemos llevar nuestro concepto de justicia sin caer en la tentación de modificarla a favor?
Y ustedes? cuantas veces han visto esta película? A cual bando se suman: Cady o Bowden?

Call me crazy, but I must confess that the disturbed characters that Robert de Niro has played are the ones that have made my adoration for this actor increase more and more every day, as well as my admiration for Scorsese and his ability to bring out the darkest sides of a personality.
First it was Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver" and then with Max Cady, the rapist of "fearful cape, both characters with a disorder product of a life that has favored them little and that act looking for revenge to redeem their own sins.
In Cape of Fear we see a De Niro who after a conviction for rape, concentrates his frustration based on a goal (not very ethical) leaving the violence that typically shows us inside the prison, taking advantage of the time to form and become his own lawyer.
And although few dominate this information, in prison there are these options, they are not only spaces to retain people who wait for the passage of time, but there are also those who allow them to study, perfect an art and prepare them for the world they will see when they leave there, only that the internal circumstances and the friction with misery, sometimes can more than the desire to improve.
But Cady did it. He went from being ignorant to a lawyer, who despite having his constant appeals denied, fulfills his sentence and comes out prepared ... but also obsessed with revenge on the one who should defend him and not sink him a little more.
The presence of a Juliete Lewis, as the daughter of the defender Sam Bowden played by Nick Nolte, is the apple of temptation that links them again. She is unaware of the previous facts between her father and the ex-convict, and expresses her rebellion against parental rules, accepting the friendship of Cady, without knowing that this would be the beginning of a nightmare.

A jewel of psychological terror cinema taken by hand by unorthodox camera angles that even make us dizzy trying to see which is the focal point that we must detail. As well as inviting us to question the ethical limits that a lawyer should have, because Bowden hid information to achieve the sentence, being he who should defend Cady.
This just makes me remember a lawyer friend, who being a public defender had as clients drug traffickers, rapists and swindlers, and how she had to handle herself in that underworld without falling into the temptations of both sides. It is really a job not suitable for a weak-minded person.
In the movie, the iconic scene of De Niro clinging to the car chassis where Bowden escapes with his family, is even recognized by those who have seen this film only once, being a meme in the time in which this term was not yet used, to express the obsession with following something or someone.
In the end, the fight between good and evil, with all the elements against both sides, can be extrapolated to those situations in which we find ourselves at a crossroads about how history would have been if we had reacted differently.
Would Cady have been regenerated in a psychiatric center? Why didn't Bowden resign from the case? Can a rapist be regenerated? How far should we take our concept of justice without falling into the temptation to modify it in favor?

Cabo de Miedo es perfecta, la actuación de Robert de Niro es épica y una de las imágenes que comparte en su post, es de mis escenas favoritas del cine, hasta en el último momento, el personaje que interpreta es terrorífico y nunca quiso demostrar nada que el personaje de Nick Nolte sintiera satisfacción o el estar a salvó.
Gracias por compartir esta joya de verdad que es una de las películas imperdibles cuando se trata de los clásicos.
