A lot of people like to do certain things, but they're not that good at it. Keep going through the things that you like to do until you find something that you actually seem to be extremely good at. It can be anything.

About the Quote

We've been told to pursue our passion and to do what we like to do, but that's not always good advice:

  • As much as a young boy wants to play ice hockey, it isn't a good idea to do so if his vision is bad enough to be considered legally blind;
  • As much as a young girl wants to become an astronaut, it can't happen if she can't overcome claustrophobia.

While pursuing our passions is something we should still do, we need to find a passion at which we can also excel (not to mention make a good living):

  • Nadia Comăneci and Mary Lou Retton excelled at gymnastics to the point where they stayed connected to the sport years after they won their Olympic Gold Medals.
  • As great as Shawn Johnson was as an Olympic gymnast, she switched into another of her passions: entrepreneurship.

On the flip side, Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks franchise of the National Basketball Association, has a strong passion for the game of basketball. Nevertheless, he recognized that he wasn't good enough to make a living as a basketball player. As a result, he focused his energy and efforts into technology; he became a billionaire.

Some (More) Information about George Lucas

During his course of study at the USC Film School, George Lucas made Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB. This film took the top prize at the National Student Film Festival in 1965. It would also be the basis for the 1971 film THX 1138, a feature-length version of of his prize-winning film. THX 1138 starred Robert Duvall and was co-produced by future mentor Francis Ford Coppola.

In 1967 George Lucas completed a six-month internship at Warner Brothers Studios, where he assisted Francis Ford Coppola on the 1968 film Finian's Rainbow. His next project as an intern was the documentary showing the making of another movie by Coppola, _The Rain People (1969). In 1970 Lucas shot a portion of the documentary Gimme Shelter, the film about the violence which broke out at a Rolling Stones concert during the 1969 Altamont Festival. For Gimme Shelter, Lucas was making it for Albert Maysles, David Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin.

THX 1138 was greenlit by Warner Brothers-Seven Arts, and the studi assigned George Lucas to direct it for the silver screen. This movie received quiet reviews-- good and solid, not great or ground-breaking. It was not a bad movie, but it wasn't embraced eagerly by critics or audiences. THX 1138 was also one of the first films made through American Zoetrope, Coppola's movie studio. Even with its muted reception, George Lucas showed promise as a feature-length director.
