Project Wolf Hunting (2022) Review

macproperty(1).png

Hey everyone! Good to be back reviewing again. I have been watching a lot of K-dramas and Korean movies as well as Thai films that I needed to review. But I have to start with the one that captured my attention the most as it’s the most bloody, gruesome, with intriguing twists.

Project Wolf Hunting is a Korean film directed by Kim Hong-Sun and is his newest work after 3 years. The film is available streaming via Viu Premium. This film runs for 120 minutes starring various well-known K-drama and Korean cinema actors such as Seo In-Guk, Sung Dong-Il, Ko Chang-Seok, Park Ho-San and Jung So-Min. In this movie, the protagonist and antagonist will be revealed by the end of the movie. The character that you thought was the actual antagonist, might surprise you. During the promo and trailer, they only feature and highlight Seo In-Guk meanwhile, the character that seemingly has a lot of lines and is the important part of the film such as Jang Dong-Yoon wasn’t really highlighted in the trailer. This film itself was gripping, fast-paced, action packed though there were scenes that were totally dull.

The plot follows the story of a group of highly dangerous criminals who committed heinous crimes on the run from the Korean jurisdiction. They were captured in the Philippines and were soon about to be extradited. However, the Korean government learned from their previous mistakes from bombing incidents while transporting the convicts through Air. They decided to do it quietly using a cargo ship and without media attention. As they sail through the pacific ocean, the group of these criminals decide to riot causing bloodshed among the cops and the criminals. During the process, they awakened a beast which made them change from rioting to escape, to surviving the powerful beast’s attack.

In my opinion, this film was entertaining, thrilling but sometimes I can’t stomach the scenes as it was too bloody. Then, later on, I learned from IMDB, apparently, 2.5 tons of blood was used throughout the production of the film. It was then making a lot more sense as every action in that movie was bloody. It was even bloodier than your regular horror movies, even movies like Saw or Final Destination.

The characters itself didn’t really go too much of a character development. They were pretty static and almost as good vs evil plot until the beast introduced into the film which changes the course of it. Another lowkey character suddenly was the highlight of the movie which then revealed the secrets lying beneath that cargo ship. But from this film, I particularly like the acting of Seo In-Guk as Jong Du, a fearless and vile criminal. It’s interesting how he could stare a romance K-drama into someone vile and basically a 건달 which means a member of an organized crime.

In this film, don’t expect too much dialogue. It was pretty limited as there were a lot more action scenes than the talking. It’s definitely not a movie that you watch for its dialogues.

Another aspect that I find intriguing is the setting of Philippine. In recent years, I’ve seen some Korean dramas and films mentioning Manila and the Philippines. However, they were always mentioned in a crime, thriller film and series. It’s also often a stark contrast in terms of cinematography. When the set was manila and philippine, the colors were yellow and much darker in contrast to when they were filming in Korea or mentioning South Korea which has a lot more color to it and was showing a lot more that they are the “develop” ones.

If you enjoy watching anything bloody, gore, with twists, and less dialogues, this might be for you. If I were to rate this film based on my experience, it would be 5 out of 10. It’s not a high 6 because I feel like it could have done a lot better if there were quite a bit of dialogue and more explanation about what happened. I also think the scene when the boss gets a call while getting a blowjob by another guy was quite unnecessary.

I just watched the trailer on IMDB and in that 1 minute you can see 1 ton of blood... lol... But, it looks like a great action movie, which often doesn't have that "deeper level" as you said, no character development, and more "story"... But I suppose that's OK for an action movie...
Thanks for the review... If you say it's 5/10, I will not put it on the Top of my movies to watch :)

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!

hahahaha yeah, that's how much blood is in this film. It's more like an action, fighting scenes and martial arts. If you enjoy watching those fights, it's definitely for you but 5/10 is not for me :D thanks for featuring this on ourpick project! since now I am trying to be a lot more active, I should visit your posts soon :)

Let me save this for weekend.. Sounds interesting..
Have you watched Teen Wolf? I wasn't satisfied with the story, lol.

avatar

From the looks of it, I wouldn't really like teen wolf haha. It looks like watered down version of twilight saga.

avatar

I'm not exactly a fan of kdramas. Although I long to see a few based on how good I hear they are.

But this one you just reviewed seems good enough for me - the Gore and action. I'd download it asap.

Thank you for this interesting review

avatar

I mean, certain K-drama are good and as long as you stay away from the Romance and over the top ones, you'd find a lot more interesting dramas especially their action, law, and Science fiction.

avatar

This is enough to make me delve into that world. Would probably give a review when I see one.

Hello dear friend @macchiata good day
This movie sounds very interesting, we are a family that loves action, and we don't dislike seeing blood, which would be an ideal movie for us, although I think we won't be able to see it, unless it is released on Netflix at some point.
I appreciate you sharing your experience about this movie.
have a nice day

avatar

I am not sure if this one is on Netflix but there should be as it's quite a popular one too.

avatar

I've been aware of the movie for weeks, of course I read the synopsis and if review, but I've shied away from the trailer because I want to see the movie and I don't want to spoil any scenes.

I'm going to see how it goes with the action scenes and the large amount of blood, it catches my attention although I can tell that for you it was very exaggerated.

avatar

I hope you'd like this one but really, it isn't something that is worth 6 out of 10. If you enjoy fighting scenes and intriguing plot twists, you might like it.

avatar

Wow, there's Jung So-Min in this k-movie, I'm so curious to see it. hopefully, her character this time has a home to live in.

Looking at some of the actor names, it's like giving us a guarantee. It will be interesting to watch this weekend, especially when I checked it turned out it was broadcast on Viu. Thank you very much for inspiration.

avatar

haha I want to give you a spoiler but let's keep it spoiler free :D the actors names are good but it doesn't guarantee this movie is not a flop. But it's a good action movie with interesting twists.

avatar

It looks very interesting i wanna see it 😁🔥

avatar

I'll admit that I wouldn't say that I am a fan of K-drama but I like to watch them once in a while. I had seen the trailer of this film quite some tome ago but I haven't seen it yet. From the little I know, the story sounds fresh and horrific. It's definitely something I want to watch.

It's nice to have you reviewing again!

avatar

You're right that this story is quite fresh but yeah, I have to say I wasn't a fan of the less dialogue and some of the actors that I thought was the main character apparently wasn't. I hope you get to watch it :)

avatar

Hahah... I can still recall when Project Wolf Hunting was released and the trailer and casting for the show got me good. The only thing that stopped me from watching the movie is the exact reason why you gave it a 5/10. Haha.

I've been watching Korean stuff since 2010/2011 and I've noticed that I prefer Kdrama to their movies. In their dramas, you will get sufficient time to enjoy the character depth and development. That's also where you will get to see really good dialogues and mind-blowing plot twists. However, when it comes to their Movies, the trailers are always very good. But the movie itself doesn't seem to be as good.

Thanks for sharing this review with us.

It's true that they have more character development but sometimes there are K-dramas that are just over the top. However in recent years, they've improved their story telling and started bringing up intriguing topics such as LGBTQ, corruption, and corporate greed into their storyline which makes it even more intriguing.

My family and I've been watching K-drama since 2006. It's what appeared on TV and we've watched them religiously haha and safe to say, I grew up with them too especially when they air around afternoon where I live, which is just exactly after school hours.

Have you watched any recent K-drama like Miraculous Brothers?

avatar

Amazing. It's interesting you talked about LGBTQ because I was very surprised when the topic was explored in detail in Itaewon Class. The writer really pushed his luck in the show and it paid off. Hehe. The storyline of Kdrama has been improving so much and the shows we are getting this time around are all amazing.

About the recent Kdramas, I have Miraculous Brothers in my watchlist and patiently waiting for the full episodes to be released so I can start watching it. I'm also waiting for Heartbeat, The Uncanny Counter 2, Shadow Detective 2, D.P 2. Haha.

Seems like a lot of shows are coming back for a second season. The casts for the second season of Squid Game was updated two days ago and people are trying to drag T.O.P through the mud. Haha.

You can check Bloodhounds though. I've seen that and it was really good. Can't say the same for Pandora: Beneath the Paradise. The story was way too simple, but got overcomplicated by the writer.

Also, if you enjoyed All Of Us Are Dead, you will surely enjoy Duty After School.

hello friend, cordial greetings, I am a follower of Korean movies and series always have that mystery that leaves us hooked, in addition to the scenarios where the action takes place and the talent of the characters, although the bloody scenes are strong none of that prevents us from following the attention, today I was watching a super bloody and it was not easy however there were scenes that left me endless emotions. thanks for sharing I am intrigued with this movie is noted that has a lot to have a good time.
