My Puppy (2022) Review

My puppy or my heart puppy is a drama family film aired back in 2022. This stars famous actors Cha Tae-Hyun and Yoo Yeon-Sok. It’s another fun, light-hearted film but with a strong message especially about taking care of our pet. There are a lot of pets out there that live in shelters and are often being put down because nobody wants to take them. It also sheds light on the south korean preference to non-mixed breed when adopting a puppy. The story is really simple yet its strong message is what captured me the most. You can find this film on Viu and despite having aired a long time ago, it’s only been released this week on Viu.

The story centers the life of Min Soo( Yoo Yeon-Sok) who is proposing to his girlfriend, Sung-Kyung (Ju In-Sung). While accepting the proposal, Sung-Kyung mentioned that she was actually allergic to dog’s saliva and always takes a pill when she visited Min Soo, who has a golden retriever named Runni. To Min soo, Runni was just like his brother and though it was a tough decision to try letting him go, Min Soo reached out to his cousin, Jin-Kook (Cha Tae-Hyun) who was a former cafe owner and is struggling to make ends meet. Jin Kook, who has a lot of followers online, began to post about finding a new guardian for Runni. They wanted to find the perfect house for Runni and the family who would cherish Runni as much as Min Soo does. Their journey led them meeting different dog owners who are either very possessive about their dog, treating their dog as if they’re only a display, abusing the dog, and dog owners who attempted to sell it for consumption, and thinking that abandoned dogs eventually have to be put down. At the same time, on the journey they stumble upon dogs who were thrown away and eventually bring them around. At the shelter, they learned the sad stories of the dogs and the owner mentioned that a mixed breed dog is less preferred than the pure breed one. As they came back without finding anyone to care for Runni and suitable for him, they went back to Seoul and eventually decided to keep all the dogs. Min Soo also decided to use his old family house insteading living in an apartment and build a separate house for Runni and the other dogs. Meanwhile, Jin Kook decided to start opening a cafe again and making it a dog cafe where people can drink coffee and also pet the dogs.

In my opinion, this movie was quite a cute one. They also shoot in Jeju, which adds an even more atmospheric setting to it. It’s certainly not easy to shoot with dogs and I have to say that a lot of them are so adorable and look well-behaved. I know, the storyline is really simple but it’s still worth watching especially with family or kids considering the movie message that it attempts to convey.
