Coffee Shop (2014) Review

You read it right, “Coffee Shop” is the title of a romance film released way back in 2014. The movie indeed smells like a coffee shop, it’s aesthetic, warm, and filled with atmospheric light. This film is also going to give you a warm fuzzy feeling and the classic romance storyline. The title itself was already selling me out, I mean a coffee shop story, why not? Recently there’s also a movie titled Coffee Wars but that one won’t give you this rom-com vibe but rather quite politically driven. That will be in my next review as that movie is more happening but for now, Coffee Shop starring Laura Vandervoor is something that you should check out if you’re into romance night movies.

Donovan(Laura Vandervoort) is a coffee shop owner who recently went through a heartbreak and her sister was trying to find a suitor for him. But she couldn’t really bother as the coffee shop business that she had since she was 19 is about to be closed down. In another scene, a playwright, Ben(Cory M. Grant), who was struggling to find new inspiration was getting a call from his college friend, Kevin (Jason Burkey). Ben was offered to visit the little town and retreat to the small city where the Donovan’s coffee shop was. Kevin, who was the boyfriend of Donovan’s sister, hoped that Ben and Donovan would get to know each other and be a couple. At first, Ben came into Donovan’s coffee shop and their meeting started a little awkward. But eventually, after they resolved a misunderstanding, Ben and Donovan got closer. Unfortunately, midway, Donovan’s ex boyfriend Patrick(Josh Ventura), who is a financier, came back to her life. Donovan, who was still seemingly in love, had hoped that they could be together but Patrick messed up. Ben eventually got even more closer but later, Donovan found out that Ben was using her as the characters in his play. Feeling lied to, Donovan got angry at Ben and left abruptly driving away. While driving away with her sister, she reflected on her life and the business. After crying, she went back into the coffee shop and everyone was there. They were there to encourage Donovan and eventually Ben was asking for forgiveness and confessed his feelings.

In my opinion, this movie has quite nice acoustic songs. It’s what stands out to me more than anything in the movie. The female character though, was quite the typical “It” girl who has it all. She’s pretty, smart, can play musical instruments, cares about the world and making changes, kind, and almost too perfect to exist. But it’s quite expected from a movie back in 2014, especially a romance one. The coffee shop as the background was the cherry on top that makes the movie pretty interesting. Only, the coffee to me was pretty weird. I get it, it’s really not about the “coffee” but can they at least make a decent latte? It’s like what they were serving was mostly a coffee machine made instead of an espresso one. But overall, the romance and everything was just a feel-good movie.

If you are into coffee shop romance, this is the movie for you. It’s dreamy, has aesthetic and good music too. Out of all the romance I watched, I’d give it a solid 6 out of 10. I just wish they featured better coffee.
