Alien Romulus - Review [ESP-ENG]

Synopsis: here we will meet Rain and his brother, in quotes, android Andy. They are tired of living in Jackson. Since the famous Weyland Yutani corporation is basically exploiting them. And that is why they decide to flee to the planet with other young people in the hope of having a better life. And indeed, as you can imagine, things don't go very well and they are going to be trapped in a ship with xenomorphs inside.

The truth is that I find any director who manages to generate tension in the viewer with this type of narrative of trapped characters quite admirable. Because? Well, because they really must be quite ingenious in how to use and reuse the confined space so that the rhythm does not fall, this through different creative and intriguing sequences and scenes. And here I think we were in a quite risky situation in the middle of 2024. And having in your hands one of the most important sagas in cinema. I think it was presented as a situation that could get out of the hands of the person in charge. By wanting to elevate the action or the confrontations between these xenomorphs and the crew but in a quite intelligent way

Sinopsis: aquí conoceremos a Rain y su hermano, entre comillas, androide Andy. Ellos están hartos de vivir en Jackson. Ya que la famosa corporación Weyland Yutani básicamente los está explotando. Y por ello deciden emprender una huida al planeta con junto a otros jóvenes con la esperanza de tener una mejor vida. Y en efecto, como podrás imaginar, las cosas no salen muy bien y ellos van a quedar atrapados en una nave con xenomorfos dentro.

La verdad es que yo encuentro bastante admirable a cualquier director que logre generar tensión en el espectador con este tipo de narrativas de personajes atrapados. ¿Por qué? Pues porque realmente deben de ser bastante ingeniosos en cómo utilizar y reutilizar el espacio confinado para que el ritmo no se caiga, esto a través de diferentes secuencias y escenas creativas e intrigantes. Y aquí creo que estábamos en una situación bastante riesgosa en pleno 2024. Y teniendo en tus manos una de las sagas más importantes del cine. Creo que se presentaba a que fuera una situación que se pudiera salir de las manos de la persona encargada. Al querer elevar la acción o los enfrentamientos entre estos xenomorfos y la tripulación pero de manera bastante inteligente

What we see Fede Álvarez doing here is returning to fans what once captivated them about these films. That is, presenting them with a dark and hostile space but in some curious way, it feels more like being back in charge. Given this, Mexican director and photographer Galo Olivares manages to create an atmosphere that screams eighties in every frame combined with a classic production design and almost no computer effects or CGI. And the space in which these characters live and in which the action takes place feels extremely real, resulting in this atmosphere that is perceived as humid, dark, cavernous and strident, and within a few minutes these filmmakers manage to transport us to film. of yesteryear it is as if this film had been taken from the same decade of the 80s.

Lo que vemos que hace aquí Fede Álvarez es regresarle a los fans lo que alguna vez los cautivó de estas películas. Es decir, presentarles un espacio oscuro y hostil pero que de alguna curiosa manera, más bien se siente como estar de regreso encargada. Ante esto, el director y fotógrafo mexicano Galo Olivares logran crear una atmósfera que grita ochentas en cada fotograma aunado con un diseño de producción clásico y casi sin efectos a computadora o CGI. Y es que el espacio en el que habitan estos personajes y en el que se desarrolla la acción se siente sumamente real dando como resultado esta atmósfera que se percibe como húmeda, oscura, cavernosa y estridente y a los pocos minutos estos realizadores nos logran transportar a cintas de antaño es como si esta película hubiera sido extraída de la misma década de los 80.

So before seeing them face their destiny, it is better to lay the foundations and, above all, create this bond.

Ahora, algo que caracteriza a las cintas de los 70s y 80s no solamente es la atmósfera oscura y densa sino también su ritmo. Ya está más que comprobado que la audiencia de antes tenía muchísima más paciencia para atender el desarrollo de la historia de los personajes en comparación con el público actual que empieza a desesperarse si a los primeros 20 minutos no ha ocurrido algo de impacto en la trama. Pero afortunadamente y honrando las características de las dos cintas entre las que se sitúa el director Fede Álvarez se toma su tiempo para que esta historia se cocine y es que la verdad es que la mayoría de nosotros sabemos el futuro que les prepara a esta tripulación. Así que antes de verlos enfrentar su destino es mejor sentar las bases y sobre todo crear este vínculo.

Another success that this film has is that they quickly manage to create a good bond between the characters we are going to follow and the audience and that is that ultimately these are young people who aspire for a better life. They are at the mercy of a system that oppresses them and therefore willing to leave everything in the hope of being free. These are definitely about emotions and a situation with which the audience can quickly connect. In the case of the main protagonists, I think it is also easy to love the character of Andy, who is also wonderfully played by actor David Jonsson.

Of course, on a personal level, I must confess that I liked the protagonist played by Cailee Spaeny quite a bit, but despite what I mentioned before that we quickly became attached to the crew, I don't think they are characters with profiles as interesting as They were in the first two films, that we had these profiles with more volume. So, although they did generate quick empathy in me, the truth is, this was diluted and I no longer cared as much about their survival as the plot progressed. And I was actually much more intrigued and interested in how the director was going to make the hallways of the ship come alive and terrifying.

Otro acierto que tiene esta película es que rápidamente logran crear un buen vínculo entre los personajes a los que vamos a seguir y la audiencia y es que finalmente estos son jóvenes que aspiran una vida mejor. Están a merced de un sistema que los oprime y por ello dispuestos a dejarlo todo por la esperanza de ser libres. Definitivamente estas se tratan de emociones y de una situación con la cual la audiencia puede conectar rápidamente en el caso de los protagonistas principales creo que también es fácil querer al personaje de Andy quien además está maravillosamente interpretado por el actor David Jonsson

Eso sí, a nivel personal, debo de confesar que me cayó bastante bien la protagonista interpretada por Cailee Spaeny, pero a pesar de lo que comenté anteriormente de que nos encariñamos rápido con la tripulación, tampoco me parece que sean personajes con perfiles tan interesantes como lo eran en las dos primeras películas, que teníamos estos perfiles con más volumen. Así que, aunque sí me generaron una rápida empatía, la verdad, esto se fue diluyendo y ya no me importaba tanto su supervivencia conforme avanzaba la trama. Y en realidad me sentía mucho más intrigada e interesada en cómo el director iba a lograr que los pasillos de la nave cobraran vida y un carácter terrorífico.
