Sgt. Bilko is a 1996 American comedy film directed by Jonathan Lynn and starring Steve Martin. The film is based on the 1955–1959 television series of the same name, which starred Phil Silvers.
Martin plays Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko, a con man and schemer who is in charge of the motor pool at Fort Baxter, a small United States Army base. Bilko runs a number of scams, including gambling, renting out military vehicles, and selling surplus goods. He is also constantly trying to avoid work and to get out of trouble.
Bilko's commanding officer, Colonel John Hall (Dan Aykroyd), is aware of Bilko's scams, but he overlooks them because he needs Bilko to keep the motor pool running smoothly. However, when a new inspector, Major Colin Thorn (Phil Hartman), arrives at the base, Bilko is threatened with being transferred to Greenland.
Bilko must use all of his cunning and charm to avoid being transferred and to protect his scams. He also has to deal with the fact that Thorn is trying to steal his girlfriend, Rita Robbins (Glenne Headly).
Sgt. Bilko is a funny and heartwarming film about a lovable con man who is always trying to get ahead. It is a film that is sure to please fans of classic comedies and Steve Martin fans alike.
The film was a commercial success, grossing over $37 million at the box office worldwide. It was praised for its humor, its performances, and its faithful adaptation of the television series.
